Ok just arrived via fedex after i got home from school. FREAKIN COOL LAPTOP but one thing that bothered me about fedex is that they leave it in front of your door and leave...wth someone could've taken it and they didnt collect a signature.

Next, to the rebate. I dont really understand what or where the UPC shipping label is. Someone plz help me find it.

Next, im want to set up RAID-0, but am wondering. When i get Win7 free upgrade (...i didnt see that pamplet when i opened it...does that matter?) do i need to reformat when installing it? Also, if i do RAID-0 now, when i go to reinstall everything, will all items including the 90 Day Norton Trial stay there? Also if i do RAID-0 now, does that mean when install the Windows 7 "upgrade" disc, that it will just upgrade and replace my vista with win7 immediately? will i lose all my data from vista?

thanks fo yo help...will need to run l4d and hwmonitor to see if temps are a problem.

The Asus rebate pretty follows pretty much the same process as any other mail-in-rebates. Cut out the UPC code from the box, fill out the rebate form (should be available from the retailer/reseller website), make a copy of your invoice and mail them together to Asus.

Norton will not be reinstalled. Norton isn't any better than some of the free ones you can get anyways ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=190538).

wait so norton wont be installed? why not?????? i need it!!!!!!!

im running memtest diagnostics right now. when windows reinstalled (why did it only use one disk, there is two recovery disks...) and it rebooted twice for no reason. i have no idea why tho. hopefully after memtest all will be well.

another weird thing is that when im installing vista, its at like 800x600 res. It looks really bad. i hope that when i restarte vista from now on, that it doesnt always start up at such low res. I rmbr it happened with my friends G1S. he always had to go to properties after each restart to change it back to WSXGA+....

dam the first reinstall with RAID failed...idk what happened. What exactly is the way you reinstall? the driver CD didnt really install, the gfx drivers were not there. how do you exactly insatll windows vista without trouble? heres the entire walkthrough of what i did....

i put RAID on in the "ide configuration" and then it rebooted and i pressed F2. Then Ctrl+I to change RAID-0 options. i set it up with name "volume0" and cache size as 128KB. Then it restarted and i put disc 1 of the 2 discs for recovery media. It finished to 100% and then i put the driver CD in. (Note that i did not put in Disc 2 of the recovery discs) it did some CMD commands and then it rebooted. i got to windows vista screen and it rebooted again automatically without doing anything, and once again. I then ran Memtest diagnostics then rebooted. the third turn it logged in and it was at 800x600 res and no drivers seemed to be installed. I tried changing the res and didnt work on properties (there was no nvidia option in the right click properties on desktop either). then it rebooted after some system update and i got BSOD whenever i try to login to windows after that. what do you think is the problem?

Don't worry about just using one of the restore disks. It's suppose to be like that.

As for your resolution, you must install the graphics driver before you see the nvidia control panel and change your resolution.

There's not need to panic. Many people have experienced this issue. Instead of installing the driver from your driver disk, simply download them from the Asus website.

Yeah, just put the drivers disk in again and install everything. For some reason it doesn't install all the drivers during the recovery process.

typical example of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

    but actually trying to help
I dont think the recovery files would be on the driver cd
have u tried the other cd?

I really need to know what to do...quick replies plz. Should i turn it off and put it back on or leave it there cuz it normally takes this long or what? if i turn it off now i would regret to find out it normally takes more than 1hr to reinstall.

need help b4 i continue. on the bright side, the screen which it shows is with FULL HD so the gfx driver must be in there....

and i would really like to be informed more about the Norton/Win7 upgrades. thxs

edit: well i turned it off cuz that the only thing i could do and i thought 1:45 mins is too long for something to restore to factory default...now i need to repeat the process for a third time. PLZ SOMEONE HELP ME WITH THIS!!

you using recovery disc or from the hard drive? when i first got it to install it took around an hour too, using the hard drive, but i use windows 7 anyway.
as far as i know, if youre worried about norton, it should be in the driver cd so you can just install windows normally and install norton separately

well its windows has loaded again. i used the "recovery only C:/" so now it works.

but it quite annoying that everytime it reboots i get this random SYSrest. prompt followed by CMD.

Now that everything is starting to work out and im installing the drivers....how to i change the password. My name is administrator and the password protection is on...what is the password? idk wth it can be ive tried "admin" "asus" etc and nothing works. i would really like to put my own password in. how do you find out your password?

When you start up windows for the first time it should go through an installation thingy where you set up your name and password, etc. =/

mine didnt go like taht :( it just logged in and now its admin. it has a password on it and i really need to find out what it is...if not looks like i will need to reinstall for a fourth time...or is there an easier way?

HUGE MASSIVE EDIT:!!!!!!!!!!! no password was the password..nvm i got it. the only possible thing thats bugging me now is 1. the file username in the directory of C;/ is ADMINISTRATOR, not SACH7002 (not a biggie but i liked it to have been my name...but it doesnt do anything). and 2. hopefully norton trial will reinstall and still have 90 day trial again....

A box should pop up asking you if you want to stay in audit mode or out of box experience mode, minimize this and put in the driver disk and install the remaining drivers, then choose the out of box experience mode. Your computer then should restart and then you can go through the windows setup process.

^I don't know if you need to do this or not...

o wow thats the exact thing that keeps coming up. Cept i put "quit" on the bottom one and now that waiting vista screen has returned!!!! nononono i think im going to do this....RAID-0 again with 64kb cache insetad of 128KB. Then when it says driver disc needed, i turn it off and restart. then install drivers manually esay enough.....

YES EVERYTHING HAS WORKED OUT!!!!!!! I LOVE this. norton is back on for 90 days, vista is returned to normal. i shouldve done that drivers thing later like i was told. jeez what a trouble it has put me through just so i can install drivers early on. Now it time to install my fav. programs.

One last question...when i will upgrade to win7 is all my data deleted or carried over? becaues there is no point in me making a big makeover for vista if im keeping it for 2 months b4 win7 comes along.

This is where you go to register for the Windows 7 upgrade- https://ebiz3.mentormediacorp.com/upgrade/(S(parhcffpgfhzjy3qnvw3bc55))/Select_Lan.aspx

And yes everything will be erased when you upgrade. Just backup everything onto an external HDD, and you will be able to recover everything.

now to uninstall bloatware and get my programs. one really bad thing i experienced is with my internet speed. downloading mozilla takes like 2mins but on my destop its instant download like 2 secs. im d/l crysis demo rite now and its fluntuating a LOT!!! like down to 20KBPS then up to 1.5MBPS...pretty dam weird.

While traveling I found ExpressGate to be pretty useful. (Yes, I brought a G50vt into an airport, with all it's light-flashing glory).

How to reinstall it, I have no clue.

well too bad lolol i already unistalled it. its actually a program in the unistall menu. i thought it was quite useless cuz it doesnt consume "less" power. The only possible benefit is that it boots quicker but i can wait 30secs for vista to load up on my RAID-0 setup lolol

Yeah, I timed my vista bootup compared to express gate awhile ago, and I think that express was only around 10 seconds faster... I didn't uninstall it since I just like having my touch sensitive keys actually have functions, but I can't see myself every using it.

ok so after everything has been installed etc...i checked my temps with HWMonitor and the GPU is at 68C and CPU at 52 for basically all cores. this seems way too HIGH!!!!! this is worrying me...it was 60C b4 DOX185.85 and now its 70C. this is only with word/firefox/steam download/botting clubbing.com etc...this cant be normal. if GPU was at 55-60C, then it would be normal......

edit: goddam with WEI i already get up to 80C. wth is wrong? is that normal? also for WEI, it was 66/66/69/66 for cpu temps maximum. im scared lolol no but srsly.

L4D maximum was 90C after like 15mins. when i switched it was at 84C. should i be worried? i know this laptop runs hot but is this TOO HOT?

What are you temps after just one run of 3DMark06?

Orthos stress test for like 20 minutes?

Furmark Extreme Burn in, native rez, 8x aa for ~10min?

Idle temps after like 30 minutes of rest with nothing running?

    Ambient temp?

    @ sach -
i had the exact same problem that you do.....until i saw a psychiatrist who then diagnosed me an OCD type 2 paraniod schizophrenic. the doc then prescribed me some medications and now i'm stable AND ok with the fact that the g51vx-a1 laptop runs hotter than most laptops i've had experience with (except maybe the macbook pro) i take extra comfort that the laptop comes with 2 years manufacturer warranty so if anything ever goes wrong they will replace ANY component (as long as you don't break that warranty sticker)
if you want i can give you a list of what and how many meds i take in order to help you, because this is what we do in these forums. ;)

in the meantime, mine runs at roughly the same temps and we should be the lucky ones as there are rx-05s (BB) that run waaaaaaay hotter. then only time i would worry is if the temps went past 100 for extended periods OR i ran outta meds :D

have fun with the new toy!

ok guys i know it runs hot, by hot i mean around 60 for idle gpu. mines 10C more...i dont like it like that LOL. but let me just configure my wireless N router so i can get fast speeds then d/l 3dmark.

What are you temps after just one run of 3DMark06?
    not done yet

Orthos stress test for like 20 minutes?
    not done yet

Furmark Extreme Burn in, native rez, 8x aa for ~10min?
    not done yet

Idle temps after like 30 minutes of rest with nothing running?
temps after 15mins of idle is 46C/47C/47C/47C C2Q and 65C for the GPU. 65 for the GPU

    Ambient temp?
    75 F

    EDIT: L4D after 1 hour..... 95C!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

need to also apply for the win7 upgrade. can anyone who has done it help me with all the specific info needed.

The proof of purchase must include the following information:
o A clear description of the product.
o The product's date of purchase.
o An invoice or receipt number.
    o The product's price.
o The reseller's contact information, and if possible, the reseller's company seal or logo.
o The proof of purchase should also include the product's serial number, if the reseller normally lists serial numbers on their invoices.

i got all of it cept the last two. should i attach it via photoshop to the invoice or would they think thats tampering with the invoice? also does the driver disk of G51 that comes with it work with win7?

Yea I was real worried about the heat. I'm still ordering knowing that the 2 year warranty will cover things if its due to their work.

sach7002 I hope your using a cooler. If the temps are abnormally high for this unit get it replaced. I read someone else experiencing the same issue and got a new one that doesn't get as hot.

See what the temperature of your GPU is at idle after a cold boot. Mine idles in the mid 50s after a boot and in the lower to mid 60s after gaming.

Finish up the other temp tests first.

The Asus warranty is fairly simple....I just attached a scan of my receipt but I bought it via Best Buy so....

The drivers disc should work for most of the drivers in Windows 7 but you may to download some from the Asus website.

I'd highly suggest lowering the OC......the cooling isn't good enough to make running at those GPU clocks sane.

Honestly, your idle temps look way too high for both the CPU and GPU.

I usually keep my CPU undervolted, but I'll put it to full voltage and turn off my Zalman to see what temperatures I get while I surf.

And twenty minutes later of music-listening and web-surfing:
(GPU undervolted to I-Can't-Remember, CPU at full 1.350 voltage)

    CPU: 42/41, max 52/52
    GPU: 54, max 56
    Ambient: 78
On top of inactive Zalman NC2000

Those idle GPU temps are of some concern......they really should be in the 50Cs if you're at 2D clocks. 62C would be fine if its idling stuck at Extra.
