Ok, I did it. I just splurged and bought an Eee PC!

    Here's what I got:

    (1) Black Eee PC 4G
    (2) Windows XP Home SP2 OEM (any good reason for Pro?)
    (3) Transcend 2GB DDR2 667MHz
    (4) Transcend 8GB SDHC
    (5) Coolmax Extnernal 5.25" Enclosure
    (6) Lite-On DVD-RW
    (7) WD Passport 120GB HDD (Already Own)

Grand total with shipping / tax = $625.11 US

Not sure that I really need it yet, but I'm just a geeky tinkerer at heart. With my luck the 8" 960x600 screens will be out next week!

    Oh well.

So you are going to void the warranty by upgrading the RAM and solid-drive???

But that is a good build!

No, you don't void the warranty if its not a Surf AFAIK. I am not updating the SSD, just a high capacity SD card for added storage. An 8GB SSD would cost probably a few hundred $$$. With the Surf there is no lower compartment and have to physically open the whole laptop to update the RAM. That will void the warranty.

There are some problems installing Home on the EEE, don't know the full extend of the problem though. Check eeeuser.com
