Remember a P4 3GHz is slightly worse (or about the same) in real-life performance than a Pentium M Dothan running at 1.6GHz. I can tell you that from first-hand experience. Then again, the Atom is lower than the P-M 1.6GHz so you do have a point.
If anyone has bad GPU performance, definitely check a) that you're running the dedicated GPU and b) that PowerMizer isn't buggy and caps the GPU clocks.
-
Later today I tired different settings (low, medium, high) but it still seems not much difference among these settings (only get laggy good graphic or laggy poor graphic...). This make me feel like to overclock the Atom so that it wouldn't be the bottleneck.
I haven't seen any powermizer on my N10, can anybody tell me more about it?
Also, I have a problem about switching between AC & battery. When ever I unplug the AC power the power profile of will change to battery but the power management under Vista fail to switch from high performance to battery mode and I need to do it manually. Any solution to it?
Thanks a lot guys -
Someone needs to step up, gut the motherboard out of their N10, and figure out what the name of the clock generator is... then it may be possible for the developer of SetFSB to develop an actual overclock for us.
-
Also, XP is a ***MUST*** with an Atom CPU. Vista just seems to be lethargic. After installing XP everything seems so much more responsive.
Apparently stupid Microshaft license agreements prevent XP from being offered on a system with a dedicated GPU - in other words, it's Vista capable so you have to run Vista. We will see though, since the Eee brand is looking to add a dedicated GPU... which makes me wonder, what would be the difference between the N10 and an Eee with a dedicated GPU.
Finally, has anyone figured a way with the dedicated GPU to offer a "compressed" video mode like with the Intel GMA950 for resolutions greater than 1024x600?
There's several great games that I'd like to play but have a minimum of 1024x768 requirement. When running these games, they just hack off the bottom of the screen. Sins of a Solar Empire in particular of great interest. -
Welp. Finally did some WoW'ing. I'm getting anywhere between 20-40 fps as measured with FRAPS. Best performance seems to be when both color & depth is set to 24-bits. 4xAA (4X Multisample) is turned on. I had everything set to low except for a few items.
WoW is definitely playable on the N10J.
Cheers,

or a hammer if you'd like!
-
Probably I will install XP Pro in my N10 when I have time later. -
Could someone else run GPU-Z and see if their 9300 is also running @ pci-e mode 1X like mine is. I find that a bit odd, although i'm sure that isn't a bottleneck it would be nice to know why it shows up that way.

Unscrewed everything. Pulled off the keyboard. Took me awhile to figure out how to safely remove the ribbon connection, but it was easy.
Couldn't pull apart the top and bottom of the notebook chassis.. didn't want to force it.
I got 80% of the surfaces to give apart(cleverly utilizing credit cards to hold it open haha), but I could not successfully pull apart the front-right in front of the touchpad or the LEDs... again, didn't want to break anything so didn't force anything. Not sure if I needed to do something more.
It's re-assembled right now, but I'll try to pry it open again tomorrow...... -
I have also noticed that my CPU clock alternates between 1592MHz and 798MHz, by utilizing CPU-z on my tray.
Is it being throttled by SpeedStep and how do I disable it?
edit: I guess speedstep doesn't really throttle gaming, so I don't care nvm. -
Good decision. Speedstepping is there for a reason (power and heat savings), and it has a negligible performance impact so it should not affect your gaming.

Hi guys
Tonight I tried to play Rise of Nation on my N10 but it return "can't initiate RoN and make sure it is compatible with RoN" Is there anyway to get this straight? -
WoW @
800x600 resolution
24 bit/24 depth color
VSync enabled
All effects on high, with spectral lighting, death effect, etc enabled
Intro video- 60fps
WotL splash login screen- 30fps
Character selection screen- 60fps
Undercity, not populated- 10-15fps
Intro "flying" when you first roll class- 20fps
Grinding in the Den(orc spawn)- 20-25fps
I might try and tweak different settings to see what optimal fps I can get... but its playable anyway. -
And what version is the video card driver?
I'm wondering if it can handle Red Alert 3..... -
I'm going to swing by my local game shop to see if they have Red Alert Premier in stock or not. If they do, I'll pick it up.
Cheers,
Kermee -
2 more days for Red Alert. I thought it comes out on the 30th.
-
Has anyone else tried Team Fortress 2 on the N10J yet? Ive tweaked a few settings and have it running pretty decent. 15-25fps outdoors (5-10 /w a lot going on) and 25-30 indoors.

Cheers,
Kermee -
yea i have been going on for the last 2 days downloading patch after patch through teh blizzard updater(slow....) so i am dloading the patch from 2.4 to 3.02 right now from another site right now(2Gb+ @ 1.1mbps
).....
@ Red Alert 3.... I dont know about that one guys i mean i have been playing RA2 and sometimes the battles get slugish! specially when i am rolling with over 20+ tanks! to destroy another base camp haha. Dont get me wrong it still runs but stutters a lot.
Fear Test got me: about 98fps max, and a low of about 25fps everyone on med and high.
Max Payne runs real smooth cept for the occasional hiccup this is will all settings on pretty much high.....
if the atom could only run at about 2ghz i think the small hiccups on most games would go awayso if anyone has found a way to overclock yet let me know
I took it apart the other day and here are just a few pics of the guts... will post more pics up soon as i can find the battery charger for my camera lol... i cant post urls yet so the site is www dot n10user dot com the thread is located in the hardware forum.... enjoy. -
I have a problem with installing WoW on my n10j. Every time I put in the 4th disc of the game, a box pops up and an error appears. Do anyone know what's the about?
I installed xp pro sp2 on my n10j. I'm also using a dvd burner from my tower which I use a Sata/IDE to 2.0 usb cord to my laptop. Is this the reason why I keep getting an error in WoW?
***EDITED***
~I've installed Company of Heroes and it runs pretty well with low settings. With the cord plugged in and having the notebook on ' Maximum Performance', average fps is 37, Max fps is 94, and Min fps comes to 14.5. In ' Game Mode', the average fps is 38.8, Max fps 96, and Min fps 16.4. So I guess 'Game mode' actually work.
~ GTA-SA runs pretty smooth, gets a little choppy once in a while
~ Counter Strike on Steam is OK too. It's not as smooth as I thought it would be. I'll have to change some settings in console and see if it gets better fps and no choke. -

That link requires a WoW account. -
Red Alert 3 is pretty playable on this little beast!!!
Although the screen is a little bit too small, still look decent!!!
Is there anyway I can play it in 1024*600 instead of 800* 600??? -
I installed RA3 last night, didn't get a chance to play. I'll try to see how to modify for 1024x600. I'm sure there's a way. There is with C&C 3 I believe, and the method for RA3 is probably similar.
-
So the N10 can play RA3. So I can install all C&C games on this. I like that. C&C all the time.
-
I am using XP. To get native 1024x600 resolution, go to your:
C:\Documents and Settings\[WindowsName or Administrator]\Application Data\Red Alert 3\Profiles\[yourGameName]\Options.ini
Edit Options.ini.
Find this line:
Resolution = xxxx xxx
And edit it to set your resolution to:
Resolution = 1024 600
That's it. It will now run at native 1024x600. Have fun! -
-
Got it,
the stupid Vista hide it under roaming..........
The full path should be:
X:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Roaming\Red Alert 3\Profiles -
Can it run RA3, UT2007 and GTA4?....is it possible to overclock the Atom processor?
-
Visit this site to learn how to overclock. Not 100% complete, but still works at 1981MHz (compared with 1600 stock).

I've been able to get the N10J-A1 up to 2.1 GHz but I haven't run stability tests yet other than an hour of Prime95.

Funny, mine also works @ 2.1ghz, have you noticed a big increase in performance as well?
Somewhat off topic, I just built a Dualcore Atom system with the Intel D945GCLF2 board, I would be thrilled if I could oc the DC atom to 2.1ghz as well, sadly the PLL that works on the N10 doesn't work on that board, I guess i'll just have to do trial and error. -
Yes. It's definitely "snappier" in Vista. I'm loving the Intel Atom OC'ed to 2.1 GHz. I haven't tried to push her over 2.1 GHz really. I started getting BSOD's at around 2155 MHz so I thought 2.1 GHz is good enough.
Seems to me the only thing really limited the OC'ability of the N10J (or Eee's for that matter) is the timings on the memory. There's no way to manually set dividers so the quality of your memory is the weakest link in OC'ing these suckers.
Cheers,
Kermee -
SlingPlayer 2.0 seems to like the 2.1 GHz OC also. Runs *very* well plus you can see the CPU usage graph on my Vista Sidebar.
Cheers,
Kermee -
I'm at 2.0 ghz and WoW runs phenomenally better. This machine rocks!
Temperatures haven't deviated more than 1-2 degrees from stock. -
so you guys with vista, do you run setfsb with power 4 gear uninstalled?
-
Cheers,
Kermee -
Anyone Tried Power DVD Ultra Yet on it?
How well does it play back 720P/1080P WMV/H264 with Hardware Acceleration Enabled? -
Eee Forum: N10J with GeForce 9300M GS playback report 720P/1080P - WORKS!

Oh. And yes, HDMI output (i.e. 1920x1080) with audio (passthrough or downmix) works great on the N10J.
Cheers,
Kermee -
man i want an n10 now. This will need to be my next notebook.
Just received N10J-A1 today - A few questions.
