Hello,
I did a lot of research around here before I made a laptop purchase, and I read just about every single Asus forum thread before making a decision on the WV3. I had some huge concerns with the screen before I made the purchase due to some rather volatile threads regarding screen issues, but I also read enough glowing reviews about it that I figured it was worth taking the plunge.
Now that I have it in my possession, I must say I don't know what to think of my decision. I have just a couple comments and questions that I hope some fellow owners are willing to address:
*First, is it just me or is there truly no "sweet spot" such that certain colors will look uniform throughout the entire screen? I'm talking light oranges, greens, grays, blues, etc. If I configure Dead Pixel Buddy manually to display these tones, I cannot, no matter how I tilt the screen or adjust my distance from the screen, receive a uniform hue. It is much deeper at the top and very washed out at the bottom.
*It appears that there are 3 light sources on the left side of the screen, the bottom most left corner being the most obvious and bright. It washes out the colors on the bottom of the screen. The middle of the screen looks great and the top isn't too bad either although it is noticably less lit than the bottom. This is in normal light. I've attempted adjusting the contrast, the brightless level, and just about everything else but find this problem remains.
*All that being said, I can stand back about 3-5 feet, adjust the angle, and see an absolutely beautiful picture with none of these problems. But who sits that far away from a 14" screen?
I don't remember seeing these problems on the 14" Compaq v2000, but I'll be heading to BestBuy this weekend to take a closer look.
I absolutely love the size and the build of the WV3, but I think the screen could possibly drive me crazy after working on it for hours on end every day. The z70va matte screen may be a better option for me.

Hey. I haven't heard many, if any at all, issues about the backlighting, but for the colours, try this if you haven't already:

Thats the reasoni returned my z63a no uniform colors try watching a dark dvd movie and u will not want that pc for another day. the v2000 screen isnt as bad but the dv1000 by hp is bad as the w3v but you can test it at best bu its to light in there u wont get a proper view.

It's funny, I had no idea how blue my screen was until I did that. I adjusted the blue contrast down slightly and it made a world of great difference. But my problem was never the quality of the colors really, it is just more or less the fact that the bottom of this screen is always more lit up than the top no matter how I angle the screen.
Maybe I am just overly picky, and I'll prove that to myself when I get to Best Buy and check the comparable 14" glossy screens out to see if they share the same problems. I'll be making it a point to compare this to the Sony FJ and the Compaq v2000.

Holy cow! What a difference that makes -- it does seem odd at first, but looking at photos, they definitely look better now. I'm a sculptor, and have been adjusting the colors in photos of my pieces, when all along it was the screen itself that needed to be adjusted! Thanks, coriolis, for saving me a lot of work in the future.

No prob, it works great for me too
Thanks to the OP for that. -
Ha! I got so carried away last night with how great everything looked after the adjustment I forgot to respond to the thread!
kenwx1, I have no such issues with my screen. Yeah, it's a pretty narrow vertical angle (but a super-wide horizontal -- too bad they couldn't switch those.....), but other than that my screen looks fantastic: good colors, even brightness. I recall when the W3V first came out a lot of people were complaining about visible light sources, uneven colors, etc.; the consensus seemed to be that it depended on which manufacturer's screen you had. Guess I just lucked out and got the good one. If you prefer the glossy screen, it could be worth trying an exchange -- I love mine so much I will never go back to matte screen ever again. Never, d'you hear me? Never! You can't make me! NO...................... -
Barong,
So can you run Dead Pixel Buddy with a light orange color or red or green and see a uniform color throughout the screen? If so, then I definitely have a problem here.

i really wish I could try to readjust the colours on my Z63a...but those settings only work with ATI drivers since intel integrated drivers don't quite work the same way.
I did try those settings...and man, things look WEIRD. Very bright and contrasty...lol. -
Just a quick note... I'm back from Best Buy, and although they didn't have the Sony FJ on display yet, I must say the WV3 screen absolutely blows the HP out of the water and is at least on par with or better than the Compaq.
Granted, there is a ton of light in Best Buy, but I could at least tell you that they share the same exact problems as this machine only to what seemed like a greater extent. It must be something with the 14" LCD's. They pale in comparison to the 15.4" screens in regard to viewing angles.
The most impressive screens I saw were the Sony's. I was also impressed with the Vaio S with a 13.3". It seemed to have pretty good vertical viewing angles and an overall excellent display.
The employee I spoke with said the FJ may be on display this Sunday so I'll be back to take a look.

My screen looks perfect in both color and brightness no matter what. -

90 degrees is the sour spot under poor light conditions. If you turn the screen below 80 or above 100 you will notice it becomes very evenly lit. Again this is only noticeable on certain background. I dont find this distracting and 99 out of 100 do not even notice. That prolly becuase 99 out of 100 are easily pleased and this screen is very pleasing.

What is truly amazing is the quality of the build of this machine vs. every single other brand I saw today. Granted, I spent some time researching before I made this decision, but seeing other laptops on display after actually having had my hands on this machine was quite an experience.
There is no comparing the build quality to any Toshiba, HP, Compaq, or even Sony that you'll ever lay your hands on. This thing is built like a rock, feels like a rock, and is more aesthetically pleasing on the outside than any of those systems.
I think there is just something native to all the 14" screens on the market that give them this vertical viewing angle problem, and now that I've seen it is prevalent throughout all 14" screens, I can honestly admit I was just expecting a near perfection that is unreasonable to expect of any laptop LCD.

You are the man. My centiments exactly. Glad to see someone sit here and point it out instead of picking appart every little trivial thing that they would like different. Guess what 1 machine has to please everyone. If you dont like it then your picky cus it sure is **** near perfect. -
I agree. My W3V kicks all the other computers that I was looking at. I have no regrets whatsoever.
-
No regrets with my Z63a here! Solid machine.
