Well I went for it, and I got the A8Jr. It just got here from NCIX. I got an extra gig of ram for it but it won't be in stock until next week, so until then I have to used vista' readyboost with a 2gig sd card. Othere then that, the initial tests are good, runs smooth and fast. I am very impressed with the build quality and the design. I just took 15 minutes to remove all the crazy stickers.

I need to format it, get rid of the partitions...etc.

What do you guys suggest? It is preloaded with vista home premium.
If I erase their backup partition do I have everything on CD?
Any guides to follow to do a fresh install (for vista) without any bloatware?

If you want to modify your Vista cd, try out vLite http://www.vlite.net/

You can remove and add different things on the cd, for example remove features, add some tweaks and integrate drivers etc :) The Windows XP version (nLite) is incredible, but there are already many things that you can do to your Vista cd with vLite :)

What made you go for the A8Jr instead of the A8Jp or A8Js?

Hold on you can use your recovery CD without modification to do a clean install, here's a guide EBE wrote on how to do this, which also pertain to Asus recovery discs.

You may also want to compare Vista and XP to see the performance difference you have in terms of synthetic benchmarks and gaming.

I may compare the 2 down the line. However, i'm not a heavy gamer so its not THAT important.
However, i don't know how relevant that link is for vista clean installs... can't really do the same thing.
I did find though that there is barely any bloatware in asus computers... they just have their applications, and norton.

What do you guys do to callibrate your battery? I should be able to get more out of this battery but it's not.

    Congratulations on your new notebook!!!

Can you also post a pic of the Vista Experience Index? You know the number from 1-5 that Vista scores to your particular hardware?

    TIA!

hmm... yea from these specs, you should get anywhere from 3-3.5-4 hours, but it depends on the settings.

try turning your settings to the lowest (and the brightness to just readable), then charge up your battery to full, and run it down while doing minor tasks (web browsing, word processing, small stuff). I'd be pretty disappointed if it doesn't fall into that range with these conditions.

so the graphics power is about equivalent to a nVidia 7200 Go and is better than the x1300. not bad, all things considered. or at least, against this chart here, it is: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

I wonder if there are any x1400 systems with a 14" screen. I know that LG has a few with the bugger 15.4" screen, but I don't what anything as big as that.

btw dementor, this is Mr. Friendly off of NCIX

The A8Jp is about $50 more and it's twice as powerful graphics-wise ...

I'm not saying you should return the A8Jr, since there are positives of having a less powerful graphics card, such as longer battery life, but all the while ... I would almost always recommend buying an A8Jp over an A8Jr.

Wow you just revived a 2 month old thread with information that has been discussed many times.
Canadian users do not have the a8jp as an option... not going into more details, try searching theres some discussion on it. :p

The A8jp is over twice the power graphics-wise. A8jp gets ~4k in 3dmark05. The A8j3 only 1.5k... I'm still not sure what is so special about the X2300? What improvement did they make? Did they make it more efficient?

As far as I know it's an X1400 with a die shrink, then relabeled to make people think it's a DX10 card, then put out by ATI and marketed falsely.
