Firstly I'd like to thank you guys for helping me decide a smaller, yet still powerful laptop. The N81Vp seems to be exactly what I'm looking for.

I haven't opened up the package yet, but I'm going to get to it very soon. Anyway, this is my very first laptop, so are there any tips you guys could give me in keeping my laptop healthy? Specifically, I know the Asus comes with some bloatware, and I've already been looking at the Asus Bloatware Guide :)

Also, this will be my first time using Vista. I don't want to dive into Windows 7, so are there any tweaks and/or tips you guys could share that make Vista run better? I'm only familiar with the indexing trick.

    Thanks again!

Congrats on your new purchase :)

Personally, there's a few things that I'd do on ANY computer equipped with Vista.

    1. Disable index search
    2. Disable Aero
    3. Disable Side bar
    4. Change Vista's visual affects
    5. Edit WaitToKillServiceTimeout in registry to make shutdown time faster

All this information and more can be found on Vista tips and tweak guide.

I forgot to mention one more thing. Make sure to disable the annoying UAC if you haven't already.

I did :) Actually I have the theme in Classic View. I'm very pleased I don't have to look at the new "cutting-edge" Vista theme.

Why disable Aero and UAC? Realistically, after first few days, UAC should be barely an annoyance and helps from security standpoint. Aero does not really hurt your game performance (games reset it to basic usually) and is fairly decent from aesthetics point of view. Now, I could see how you would want to set Aero off when on battery, but on regular operations...?

Use Vista Battery Saver or whatever its name is to auto-disable Aero only on battery. Have a look at my Vista optimization guide, it is tailored to ASUS notebooks.

I agree about the UAC, it's better left on -- or turned back on once you are finished with all the driver and software installs.

It's been a week, how is your N81VP-C1? how do you think of it? I like to hear your opinion/review since I'm going to order it very soon as well. =)
