I received it yesterday. seems real solid and good quality build.
when I first started it yesterday and once this morning the fan really was loud, kinda like a weedwacker. but then it went away. is this something to be worried about, easy fix or send back to asus.
blu-ray software wasnt loaded. I just installed it and went into autoplay options and set it right, works fine now.

I removed as much bloatware as possible.i think. but in msconfig it showed 95 processes on delivery. I have it down to 78, shouldnt it be alot less than that. does anyone that has this machine have a list of what can safely be removed.

when loading COD:WAW it took over a half hour to load onto the machine, seemed like a very long time. now it ran the game great for the first mission at max specs. But I also noticed when running 3dmark, which gave me 8900, seems a lil low. that for the cpu tests it ground to a halt, 1fps. gpu tests were 25-80fps. Is something wrong here?

I will be installing other games today. do you recommend to install the games onto a seperate partition or not to worry about it. this is for gaming and movies so Im not too worried about backups.

I heard someone say somethingn about silent mode, machine seemed pretty quiet at one point and temps went to 65c on cpu w/everest. Dont think I enabled it unless it was by accident.

I was also not too thrilled that the new line was announced, was tempted not to open it and send it back to zipzoomfly, which btw after rebate this was 1832 w/delivery after 100 rebate. But I dont think they will be out for a month and probably 3k. any way too late now as ive opened it.

everyone keeps talking about sager, but an equivalent 17" machine is at least 700 more, granted a better gpu, but thats it. I kept specing one out and they didnt seem to stack up for that price difference. as far as the gateway 7805u yes it has a slightly better gpu but once you buy the warranty from BB it will actually cost you more. 339 for 3yr coverage.

any input is appreciated, ive been lurking here for two months and found alot of great information

    9k is right for a 9800m gs.
as for the cpu test, that's how it works, you'll get more or less the same framerate with a core i7 afaik. everythings seems normal to me.

I don't know where you got the 7805u being more expensive after you factor in the warranty. 1050 + 350 = 1400 < 1832. Buy a t9600 for 400 and then you are talking around the same price as your asus... not trying to defend Best Buy or Gateway or anything just trying to figure out what you are claiming.

EDIT: Also you can find t9600's for under $300, I just picked the highest price I saw.

I love best buy, I actually might have bought a 7805 but they didnt even have one on display to check out. So I ordered the asus that day. I was also figuring in that the asus would probably be built better and the 7805 is probably going to 1249 next week at BB. but your right it is still cheaper

I also consider Asus to have a better build quality, but I'd say if you take care of it they should both hold up just fine. Congrats on the purchase.

Hey, I just got mine today and had the same thing happen! Definite clunking sound from the fan when Vista first booted, then it went away and hasn't come back. I tried to get it to happen again (put heavy load on the system) but haven't been able to, fan is behaving itself.

Normal operation is really quiet, I can just hear the fan, but it's not loud.

Agreed on the build quality, very nice all round, although the direct console buttons and where you lift the screen up are a fingerprint magnet.

I'm doing a full re-install since I need to use RDP and so will be using Vista Ultimate. It's also got Nortons apps pre-installed so that has to go! :)

You mean the W90? Aside from the new GPU options, I couldn't see much difference in the specs, which doesn't worry me since I'm using it mostly for software development rather than gaming. That may seem a little strange but gaming notebooks make for good dev boxes.

I have the say the screen is absolutely gorgeous!

yeah the screen is great. I was worried about the 1900x1200 being too small. its actually pretty good. I didnt feel like doing a full install. I wiped out norton and most of the asus utilities.
The loud fan only happened twice, otherwise its eerily quiet.
Im not going to worry about the w90, anytime you buy a computer a better one is just around the corner.

Tianxia: thx for the info about the cpu test, it put my mind at ease.
BTW COD 4 looks incredible on this laptop

Yes, there will always be the next greatest thing :) My previous desktop replacement (Prostar) has lasted over 4 years, and the only problem I've had with it was the key labels and case coating where my hands rest have warn out from use!

I noticed the specs on the W90 say 5400RPM for the HDD's, that wouldn't be too good since G71G-A2 has 7200RPM. Maybe it's a typo.

I have a question though, after my o/s reinstall when I installed the latest video drivers from laptopvideo2go it didn't have 9800M GS in the list, so I just used 9800M GT, not sure if this is the right thing to do, just recall some other thread which mentioned the GS was just a marketing name for the GT. No problems so far...but should I tinker with INF's as per laptopvideo2go or play it by ear?
