I just got my i7 820qm cpu in the mail this morning, and have finished the installation. Here are my observations in case anyone is interested.

First, my stock Best Buy G60JX had bios version 203. I was hesitant to upgrade it to 206, but after speaking with Asus support (which is aweful btw) they recommended the upgrade. Side note, nobody had the notes but they all said it should be upgraded. That went uneventful, and I cannot see any changes.

So, I removed the screws to the backplate and per a tip from Pugboy, I unlocked the cpu while lifting up the fan assembly. Whatever crap they use for thermal protection was dry, hard, over-gooped on and I had to manhandle it off the copper heatsink.

I installed the new cpu and cleaned it with 91 percent alcohol. Ditto for the heatsink.

Note. When I started to rub the heatsink with alcohol, the q-tip turned blue! Looks like Asus got a smidge of blue dye on the sink during manufacturing, which could I suppose mess with the thermal paste. I also noticed a small piece of metallic shaving embedded in the thermal paste. Very sloppy and shame on you Asus!

Okay, got the system buttoned up and since I play mostly Flight Sim X I loaded that up. (CPUID identified the new cpu properly)

With FSX fully running, the temp on Cpu 0 is 70 and the other cores 66-67. GPU temp at around 80. So far I notice a 6-8 fps increase so this puppy is performing really well.

All in all, it was a great investment I think and the system is really responding well.

Last note... I went with Arctic Silver 5 for my thermal needs.

Might I ask where you picked up the i7 820qm at and for what price?

    Thanks

Thanks IKAS V! I was worried about voiding the warranty, but am glad I did the upgrade. So far the only program that hasn't change performance wise is Crysis. I can run on high settings and spike at about 26fps.
