I just got back from my local computer store, Central Computer, in San Francisco. They are having Asus demo day today, and had an Asus rep in. He said that the K51AB wasn't slated for release in the United States, and that it was a global model which would be released in mid July.

If there is sufficient interest, they may change their minds and release it here, or may import a batch on a one-off basis.

The rep gave me the contact info for the Asus North America notebook product manager. I am going to contact him about what it will take to get one in the US, and what the pricing and minimum order quantity may be. Anybody interested in a group buy?

I'd honestly want to wait before actual user feedback, benchmarks and reviews come out before purchasing anything, but I'd definitely be interested! :)

Ok I'm confused; is it US non-released or North America non-released? You mention both terms in your OP o_O

Well I've heard people say "US" and I've heard people say "North America" so it's a bit vague.

i think he means the north america manager is responsible for the sales of the entire north america. For some odd reason he/she decided to neglect the U.S. and only release it everywhere else globally.

Doesn't seem to make sense to me.

"North America" referred to the product manager. The release, or non-release, as the case may be, referred to the United States.

I meant in the actual K51 thread though. The first report we had heard of the "K51 not being released" by that GenTech PC rep mentioned all of North America, not just the US.

And subsequently, there hasn't been either confirmation nor denial of it being only the US, or all of North America.

I would be interested. Its either an Asus K51AB or I'm going to be buying from a competitor.

    I'm down!
Definitely count me in but gotta see exactly what were getting first.
First and most important we need to know it's specs.
Second and almost as important price. :D

yea man the price is sooo important. if the g51 releases in newegg.ca its definitely at least going to be 1599.99 like the current G50vt-x6 or perhaps even $1699.99 which would total to a close 2k... The EX625 is $1033 CAD after tax and everything... So hopefully the k51ab is a happy medium between the two. Time is running out though since in 2 days the stock has gone from 52 to a mere 14 for the EX625...

I would think if the EX625 was selling so well on NewEgg they will probably get more in stock. So no worries :D
Was thinking about getting this too when I almost gave up hope on the K51AB and seen the G51,but still the MSI EX625 is a great option to have if you wanna save some $$$ but still have some performance power.

see thats what trips me out. my sister says you have a good desktop already for gaming. But for some reason deep down inside i realized how much i yearn for a laptop that can play starcraft 2 when it comes out in high res and best graphics. I just hate low/medium, it just doesn't cut it. The g51 assuming it releases at newegg.ca would probably be around 1600-1700 though at least. Its even worse at my local retailer because the g50vt-x6 is already 1700 before tax so would also get close to 2k

so much frustration >_> and decisions... why can't they just stock up more Ex625 like you said. Stocking up the K51ab would be a good idea too since it has such a monster graphics card.

I would be down with this group deal as long as the price isn't ridiculous and it has the 4860 unlike the k70ab on newegg.

Btw is anyone else as annoyed as me that they couldn't even bring the K70ab with a 4650 at the bare minimum or perhaps the 4670, but really, a 4570?

I know maybe the 4860 is too much to ask, but putting a 4570 in a 17 inch notebook is almost as bad as just leaving it to the 3200 or the x1270..

    Bump

I wonder how much interest we'd have to show in order to get some 4860 ASUS laptops in the USA

Well for starters, we'd have to know of the actual whereabouts of the K51AB period lol :p As it stands, it's not out anywhere, not just America/US.

The K-series is Asus' ultra-budget line, and the build/components will always reflect that... there aren't going to be any premium parts in this one.

This laptop should be cancelled, it should have been released in july.

i can confirm AMD will release their 45nm CPU "tigris" platform on 2nd september.

if the price is not right on k51 im waiting for the new amd laptop platform. the CPU will bottleneck this laptop good pricing is the only way it can be saved.
