I bought an ASUS K53SV in late January 2012 after much research. I paid about $800 for it at Fry's Electronics. About 3 weeks ago, the AC port started working intermittently and then died. The battery is now dead and the computer not functional. Needless to say, I'm pretty annoyed that I would spend so much on a laptop and have it not working less than 4 months later!
I do not mishandle or treat the laptop in a way that would have caused it to break (i.e., jerking the cord or dropping the unit). It is used at home or at work, on a solid table -- not in bed balanced on knees, etc. I find it unacceptable that this part would fail so soon.
I contacted ASUS for an RMA and was told that they would only pay for shipping one way because I bought the laptop at Fry's. WHAT? When I registered online I was told I had the 360 warranty that provided shipping both ways. Now I'm being told that where I bought the laptop matters. Isn't it a manufacturer's warranty, not a where-you-bought-it warranty? I'm so upset right now. This was my only computer and I cannot be without a computer because of my work. I had to go and buy another laptop to get me through until this one is fixed - unacceptable.
I am wondering whether I should bother to send it in. I have read that customer service and turnaround time are horrible. I could pay someone local $75 to fix the AC port and have the laptop functioning in a day or two, or pay $30+ to ship it to ASUS, wait a month or more (I was told that it is 14+ business days turnaround time) to get it back. I have now read that this problem is common with ASUS laptops, so is there really any point in having them replace the motherboard with an identical, obviously flawed product?

Hello, you may be better off having the ac jack/port replaced. You need to find a repair shop that can replace the ac port instead of replacing the entire motherboard. You will get the laptop up and running much sooner instead of having it sent to ASUS. The reason I say this is because I had a similiar problem with my Dell laptop. But in my case the warranty was expired. I had to the option to send it in to Dell to get repaired, but the turnaround time was 15-30 days. I actually just purchase the jack myself and had a repair shop repair it which only took about 2 days since I paid for overnight delivery for the jack.
