Wow, thanks for the info guys really appreciate it. But before I buy the ram, can you guys tell me what the speed of the stock ram is? I know its probably 1333, but I just want to make sure.

It has one 4GB samsung in it same timings as the g skil I posted.

Easy to get to but you need to tilt the new memory a little to slide it in.

    no, no, and no.

i7 is not even in the same league.
the i7 is way better, and you won't see a difference with the gt540, and you can oc to gt550.
also, in cpu dependent games, the i7 will murder the amd.

what's the price of this compared to the k53sv in serbia?

    K53TA in serbia is 52,000 = 500 Euros, 6gigs,free dos, 750GB hdd usb 3.0
    k53SV in serbia is 63,000 = 600 Euros 4 Gigs, free dos, 500 GB, usb 2.0

    So i should go for i7 + gt540?

eaven cross fire regime is same performance as intel + nvidia?

Hmm... I deleted all my old drivers completely and re-installed the asus chipset drivers. Can not really say I see a big performance boost on dx11 games like bfbc2, but I haven't tryed cod-modern warfare yet; so I'll try that out later and post my results later.

No real updates on it yet, work has kept me pretty busy this week unfortunately. I plan to devote some time to it this weekend and will try to get results up then.

As for the stable OC it's rock solid at 2.6GHz. I did run p6 @ 3.0GHz without any issues for about an hour last night while playing some HoN. I might push it more but I want to dig through some of the HP threads and see where they've taken their A8's to get an idea of what to expect.

Right now I'm rocking the latest ASUS drivers (Posted 9/1?) and I suspect that because the APU is different in the A8-3530MX that the drivers aren't optimal? Anyone have any input or recommendations on this?

Wow! Gumba that is one hell of a video you put together! That destroys my earlier pictures lol! I like your work, rep well earned!

how smooth/flat is the cpu cap before lapping ?

did you lap it in the first go around, or did you open it up again later to lap it ?

thanks bro, spent a few hours putting that together...

no I never lapped the heatsinks, I probably should have but didn't since I was getting pretty good temps on my first go around...

I have now turned up the speed to 2.8GHz and it hasn't effected temperature at all.

Have you run HWInfo while running something like Prime95 to see if the CPU still throttles? I know on my HP with a 3510MX, the cores start to throttle with anything 2.6GHz or over, even at 70C. It's weird.

And lapping is highly overrated unless you know you can get a very good super flat and shiny surface, even then improvements are minimal at best. I tried lapping my desktop CPU and heatsink, and after hours of switching grits, making a major mess, and getting overly frustrated, my max temps dropped 2C. Whoopdee doo!

No I haven't ran HWInfo, or Prime95. I have noticed a shutter effect now at 2.8GHz but I think it may be my drivers...

I felt the same way about lapping, I didn't want to make that big of mess. Yes I even have all 3 grits sitting in my garage, but it just didn't seem worth it to me. but to each his own, every bit counts

Am no longer loading MMLoadDrv.exe or the Gaming Preset. I also have not allocated Deus Ex a Catalyst profile, ie High Performance Settings. Thinking all that crap just messes things up more.

Using CrossfireX again and things seem to be running pretty smooth...

still far off from finding the best settings for this thing... trial and error...

    Use the 11.9 RCx with 11.8 CAP3.

Set Deus Ex to High Performance. Gives a 20-30 FPS boost over setting it to Power Saving GPU (even in Crossfire, I checked).

You're welcome to try but don't be surprised if you can't get it to work because the cable and its corresponding pin layout won't be compatible.

so, anyone else OC their k53 CPUs to 2.8 or higher? what temps did you guys get around that clock range?

at first i tried to lock into p0 but it just throttled down to 2.2 after a few seconds (2.2 or 2.3 seems very stable), so i forced it into a profile with 2.8 only, which worked.

i ran intelburntest for 1 test before getting scared and turning it off, since the CPU was around 90 degrees celcius.. 2.8ghz oc at 1.2v, everything stock (room was about 76f?)

might exchange it for another one if it turns out i got a bad chip (haven't reapplied thermal paste/made any cooling mods yet, though) since i still got a week left~

No 2.2 GHz is about the "sweet spot". Anything higher can quickly spike temps and force auto-throttle no matter what you do.

Not to mention a minimal gain in performance above that speed, at least in non-benchmarks.

Right. I started to chase benchmarks, but then got a stroke of common sense. Games garnered minimal improvements, and was stressing my system to dangerous temperatures unnecessarily. Although after my cooling mod, my system runs cool at 2.4 GHz, but 2.6GHz funny things start to happen. I think once you exceed the CPU's designed max speed (2.3GHz for the A6-3400m, 2.5GHz for the A8-3510MX) the chip has some internal throttling mechanism once temps exceed 70C.

That could very well be re: internal throttling. My system can do 2.3, but the required voltage translates to a 5-7 degree increase in temperature that results in a boost of 2-3 fps. I'd rather lower the resolution and tweak game settings than push the hardware that much. I'm sure I'd see better results with a re-paste, but I simply can't be bothered to take the system apart and mess around with it.

Is the 11.9 RCx better than the asus chipset drivers? I just re-installed the ati drivers completely with driver sweeper and re-downloaded the asus chipset drivers clean and got a big performance boost with dx9 games with crossfire enabled. So are the 11.9 RCx worth me re-installing the asus ones and downloading the new ati ones?

Use HWInfo32 / HWInfo64 to monitor the core speeds, run Prime95 Large FFT's, and MSI Kombustor (part of MSI Afterburner package - it's kinda like Furmark) or Furmark simultaneously. I also use HWMonitor (cpuid.com) for temps. HWInfo also monitors temps but I find HWMonitor has a lot simpler and easier to read interface.

Let your system cook for a while, and once tempsexceed 70C watch the core speeds. They will start to bounce around, sometimes it takes to 80C. I think part of it is how fast the temp is rising and not necessarily the actual temperature, but the higher it goes, the more likely it is to throttle. Depending on the game though, throttling may not affect it noticeably, but for CPU intensive games like Bad Company 2 or Starcraft 2 you will definitely notice it.

I couldn't get 11.9 RCx to recognize my video card. I even did the "have disk" method and there is no mobility radeon 6600 or 6700 series option either.

I will give those a run later at work although if its not giving me issues in games may not? I do not doubt your analysis at all no matter if I do these tests or not :)

I did get those two extra fans on my cooler man what a difference, I can leave a game open (thehunter example) at it never goes above 75c. Flat on the desktop no cooler at all same game open it will peak at 82 IMO still good for the rating of 100c

I have arctic silver and re installed heat sinks on my desktops but dont trust my big clumsy hands in a laptop like you did in your video ;)

Here's what I've found with the following settings, experimenting in undervolting the B0 turbo state to reduce the idle(with many tabs open in opera) and load temperatures:

    p0 2400, 1.1125v
    B0 2900, 1.2500v
    82C+ max, ~60C idle
Throttling in intelburn after temps hit 82C.

    p0 2400, 1.1125v
    B0 2600, 1.1375v
    82C max, ~53 idle
Less throttling, but depends on the max temps.

    p0 1800, 1.000v
    B0 2300, 1.0875v
    69C max, ~50 idle
    No throttling.

Be careful if you choose to use 2.9Ghz. It's completely unstable as a P0 state, either because of insufficient voltage, rocketing temps in intelburn, or both. 1.2500v in the B0 state seems to offer stability in light usage, but temps rise too high during gaming. Using 2.6Ghz as the max B0 state can keep temps below 80 in my experience, while gaming. 2400 P0 with 2600 B0 is the sweet spot for max cpu performance and manageable temps.

Throttling takes place around 80C, if you can lower your system temps you won't run into this issue. I've ran a consistent 77C or less all the way up to 2.8GHz, but 2.6GHz is about where the chip peaks with minimal gains after that.

Here's a linear chart I made to adjust core speeds and voltages, this has worked well for testing

Best results so far are with 2.6GHz / 3GHz Boost

    800 0.7
    1000 0.75
    1200 0.8
    1500 0.875
    1600 0.9
    1800 0.95
    2000 1
    2200 1.05
    2300 1.075
    2400 1.1
    2600 1.15
    2800 1.2
    3000 1.25

it will go as low as your lowest p6 state to lower temps i am assuming. you can also adjust the time differential on the amount of time it waits to jump p states, I set both up(s) and down(s) to 0 for faster response

I'm devastated, been laying low on this STILL waiting for my financial aid and low and behold this is apparently discontinued in BBY's system. :( Don't even know what else to look at now since I really can't spend over $500 and nothing's even close to this.

It's still like that on the website and holding out a little hope that if I get the money and order through there it will actually go through. I used to work there and know people who still do and in all the regional distribution centers around Michigan it's a big fat 0. I don't know if they remembered to check the websites one or not but still trying not to get hopes up.

I was looking for this too at my Best Buy but they're all sold out in my area. What about this? FRYS.com | HEWLETT PACKARD

It's an HP with an A8 for $499 after rebate. It doesn't have a GPU as powerful as the Asus K53TA though.

^^^^It really depends on what you need. A8 is usually enough if you're not going to game. However, the HP deal wasn't as good as few days ago when HP had the A6 w/ blu-ray, 6gb ram, 500gb hd for $375 and you can customize it also.
