newegg ftw ~~ . I contact ASUS and they are like oh, you have to pay to ship it in then we will "inspect" it to ensure it warranty, and no you cant repair a refurb in reapir center.

it ran fine, I just raise a notch just to be safe.

^I know that feel bro. When I finally sold my iPad on ebay to buy this laptop it was out of stock but in a few days was back in stock. It should be in stock again, newegg restocking it before means that they're still going to sell it :)

A new AMD driver is out, but it's broken (when using fixed mode in bios mod) as tested by Link626 (thanks for testing this for everyone else!)
    >> AMD Catalyst 12.4 WHQL – BenchmarK3D
update: False alarm, just stay with the old drivers we've been using...I just saw Link626 found these drivers to be broken with our laptop just like the 12.4 beta, so it looks like we can't enjoy the benefits of these on our laptop. Maybe these only work better for different graphic card/cpu configurations from our own.

*unless someone else reports better results, I'd just stay with older drivers. This sucks for us because these drivers were supposed to have a little faster overall game performance.

12.4 whql is pretty much the same as 12.4 beta.
However...... it should work fine for dynamic mode.

When in fixed mode, dgpu will stay locked at 100/150mhz.
Loading a game or trying to run WEI will not trigger 600/900 clock speed.
The only easy way to get dgpu to clock up to 600/900 is to run flash video in a browser to force hardware acceleration. dgpu detects flash video and ramps up to 600/900, and sticks there even during idle. Clock will not come back down to 100/150 when you close out browser or game.

This is in contrast to 12.1 catalyst, where dgpu clocks behave normally in fixed mode.

Also, if you run a game and dgpu fails to clock up from 100/150, the whole pc comes to a crawl, like there's no cpu or memory left.
Even at 600/900, you can feel laggy desktop behavior.
This problem does not exist in 12.1.

I'm going to continue to bug amd with bug reports until they restore the dgpu functionality of 12.1 with the switching and rebooting functionality of 12.4

Atleast we can use it in dynamic mode then (at the expense of our fixed mode). I'm ok on 12.1 as long as any drastic improvements in games don't occur, but eventually we'll need newer drivers.
I wonder if HP AMD notebook owners who also use their version of the fixed mode are also experiencing the same problems in 12.4 drivers. It might be some kind of clash/incompatibility of the bios mod with new drivers. Good luck in trying to get AMD to do anything. We may be out of luck since it's only related to our workaround fixed mode. :(. But I'll remain optimistic. ;)

Its quite funny AMD's crossfire only works for 3Dmark11
Llano A6 too is very good on synthetic 3DMark11 while crossfire is on scoring +1600 pt. vs 2000 pt of A10 trinity
but crossfire is quite useless in realworld testing like gaming due to that AFR Implementation.
suspecting trinity too see false crossfire aka missfire
but its quite a improvement over 6620G t0 7660G almost 50 odd % igp wise

12.4 catalyst is even causing problems with desktop crossfire pc users, where their second card won't clock up or clock down.

    amd programmers suck !

really though, I just tested 12.4 again, and it does work fine if using the laptop as designed and intended.
I guess AMD could say beggars can't be choosers.

edit: iirc, 6600m and 6700m is not on supported device list on 12.3 and 12.4

then i saw north bridge voltage settings p0 and p1 in fusion tweaker i reduced voltages
to 0.9v and 0.8v respectively and my cpu temp dropped by considerable margin around 5 degrees

    Asus bios 12.4

Clocks going up and down fine, im using OC dGPU via afterburner.

But i wonder...what were clocks for iGPU for 2d and 3d? Coz clocks change works for dGPU for iGPU im not sure...

temps don't mean anything. his temps are within normal range.

dynamic mode works fine with 12.4. Clocks are all normal.
it's the fixed mode option that is very broken. it was mostly working in 12.1.

    igpu is 275/667 to 400/667
    dgpu is 100/150 to 600/900

Hey Link, on the 12.4 drivers do you still have hanging on shutdown when K10stat boost is on? Other than the fixed mode being broken, that was the only other reason why I haven't updated to 12.3 and up.

If I really need the latest Amd drivers in games, eventually I'll probably just adopt the habit of leaving boost off on K10stat when shutting down, if this continues becoming an issue.

I've been playing the D3 beta on my K53 and it runs pretty well with a full group of 4. It needs to be OC'ed however (mine's at 2.3 when I play). Without the overclock it is pretty unplayable. I run everything at high, physics included at native res.

The weird thing about the D3 beta is the fact that the frame rates are super erratic. I can go from 13-100+ several times in the matter of a second. The fps counter never sits still, but I would say that 90% of the time it hovers between 50 - 60 fps with weird hiccups every now and then. This happens no matter what settings I have it on, so I'm guessing it's because Blizzard stated they aren't too worried about optimizing the beta.

Blizzard made it a point to mention that the game will run much better upon release, since even people with desktop i7's running GTX 680's are having issues with it.

TL/DR; It's perfectly playable, but hopefully release will improve performance.

no. 12.4 reboots fine with OC.

only thing wrong with it is fixed mode performance. Otherwise it's normal during dynamic mode.

On another note, the latest beta gives me graphics corruption in a game that ran fine with 12.1 and 12.4, and CCC malfunctions when non-admin opens it- switchable graphics apps menu is missing.

AMD seems to be consistently fixing one thing while breaking 2 more with these latest drivers.

    hi guys

so i picked up this laptop today model k53ta-ss61 and i love it!

i am going to reformat it either tonight or tomorrow and wondering what chipset driver version should i use?

Asus site says V8.903/V1.2.1.321 is the latest. What is that equivalent of catalyst driver version?
and what is the V1.2.1.321 for? its only 256 kbytes

The ones on the Asus website are slightly older.

I'd go for amd mobility 12.1 or 12.4. 12.4 has some improvements over 12.1 but had issues with fixed / dynamic modes (?).

    12.4: http://www2.ati.com/DriVeRs/mobile/12-4_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc.exe

Ok so I installed Wc3 TFT, classic game and set the program to run in high performance mode in catalyst. But it still utilizes iGPU. Is it because game is old and dont need 6650m or somethings not right?

Using AMD system minonitor to check and 0% on 6650m

Can anyone tell me how you get "dGPU only"? I've read many posts replies saying that they did it but I have no idea how do to do it myself. I've flashed the modded BIOS already (I own a k43ta, not k53ta but drivers were same so I did it anyway) and switched to Manual Switchable Gfx already. I can run OpenGL games like Alan Wake with decent fps when previously I couldn't and now I wanna just use the dGPU without the iGPU.

    HELP!

Ok, I am overclocking this machine but mine has a6-3420m processor rather than what majority of you guys have.

model # is k53ta-ss61 bought from Staples.

My question is looking at the SS from you guys, the bus frequency is 100mhz for a6-3400 and for me, CPUZ indicated a6-3420m is at 89mhz. Is this normal? Obviously we cant increase the bus frequency right?

also noticed when it uses turbo boost, it only goes up to 2.1ghz 89x24=2136 hmm

    your stuff is normal.

    use hwinfo64 instead of cpuz.
it is more useful, and you will see realtime- bus bounces around from 90-110.

hwinfo also tells you when your cpu throttles.
You can OC to 3ghz and be all happy, but that won't mean anything because as soon as you sustain 80 C heat, you will see it throttle all the way down to 300mhz and make games play choppy. So you should only OC as much to prevent it from going over 80 C, which you can monitor with HWMonitor.

turbo rarely ever works for more than a few seconds, so dont' worry about that.
If your temps are above warm, it won't turbo all the way

Running modded 212 bios, Catalyst 12.3, AMD 8.861 chipset drivers.

I've seemed to encountered a new problem with using the K53TA's HDMI port. I can enter BIOS using an external monitor via HDMI, but whenever I boot into Windows it will flash a blue screen and restarts itself, the cycle repeats until I disconnect the HDMI monitor and hold down the power button to shutdown and reboot. This occurs on both dynamic and fixed GPU.

I haven't changed anything since it last worked which was only a few days ago, I've tested multiple HDMI cables and Monitors, there is definitely something wrong with my Windows settings and/or AMD drivers.

I installed the new Catalyst 12.4 drivers and that seemed to fix the HDMI problem, but on both AMD 8.861 and the latest AMD chipset driver I was unable to overclock my GPU, I couldn't get any GPU readings from Afterburner or GPUz and I could not run 3dmark06.

I finally gave up and restored to an earlier disk image, it did NOT solve the HDMI problem. However, VGA works perfectly, which is what I've resorted to using for the time being.

Anyone experiencing a similar problem or have a fix for this?

Hey links thank you for your feedback.

Fortunately, i rebooted my computer and seems its back to normal. :) I must have done something while tinkering.

and Ive been following this thread very closely read almost all of it and seems like overclocking to 2ghz seems like its the sweetspot.

    Cheers!

you can right click My Computer, and go to startup/recovery settings, and uncheck "auto restart".

if it's a blue screen, that will freeze it on the blue screen and at least tell you what is causing the bsod.

    Hi everyone.
This thread is very cluttered and long. I read about 50 pages but then thought you wouldn't mind answering my question.

I just got this laptop and I don't understand why I would need the modded bios and what's the talk about dynamic and fixed.
I'm using the latest 12.4 drivers and things seem to be working fine (The right usb port doesn't work but I've given up on that). Is there something that is not working correctly on this laptop? Why use the modded bios?
Could anyone care to clarify the state of affairs here ? :)

    Thanks in advance

You lose that function in fixed mode. You also lose configure switchable graphics screen. But when looking at AMD system monitor or msi afterburner graphs, you will still notice both dgpu and igpu still show activity when gaming. So there is still dual graphic activity. You will not truly have a "dgpu only" system or igpu only system when in fixed mode. This is just how it is...blame AMD if you don't like it and spend more for Nvidia.

Refer to 212BIOS MOD & AsusWIKI for more info.
Purpose of 212 bios mod: In AMD Vision CCC you can Manually Select discrete GPU (6650M) so a few games/apps that wouldn't recognize the 6650M (eg. OpenGL Games like Rage, Minecraft, Alan Wake?, Doom4 (in thefuture?), etc) will now see and use the 6650M instead of the slower 6520G. The benefits of 6650M also include greater number of shaders for rendering & more graphic ram (1gb).

This laptop & the fixed mode aren't for the faint of heart and those who are not tech savy at all; You have to understand that different AMD drivers are breaking the fixed mode function(eg. 12.4) while it works best with (12.1,12.2,12.3). If you are not tech savy or not a gamer, then it's ok to use the laptop on dynamic mode all the time and just keep updating to the latest drivers, since this is how it was intended out of the box from AMD and everyone here has still been very satisfied with this laptop before the bios mod the past 8 months. If you wanted a gaming laptop that would run perfectly out of the box with no thinking involved, then you had to spend more on an i5, i7 or Iveybridge + Nvidia dgpu.

So save fixed mode for later usage when you realize what benefit it has to a few games you may have problems running well in the future. A majority of games(90+%) will run the best on Dynamic mode. Just make sure you configured games to high performance in configure switchable graphics screen.;)

Performance is good in all distrubtions, I am trying to figure out how to OC in ubuntu, I found k10ctl and that might do the trick, but I don't know about crossfire capability.

Ok.. So the people that said they ran Fixed mode with single dGPU are just talking out of their bullocks?

Majority of games? My Minecraft runs average 28 FPS with a lot of micro-stuttering and a flash game called Happy Wheels dips in FPS when there are a lot of particles which shouldn't be the case given the spec of this PC. =/

However, Alan Wake runs fines compared to before Fixed Mode.. Anyone know the reason for the lousy Minecraft FPS?

I think minecraft uses opengl source hence your using your iGPU instead of dGPU. This is the exact reason why people want to have manual control over which gpu to use for specific games, programs etc.

I've tried using older and the latest HDMI audio drivers, same results.
So here's the blue screen I get plugging in HDMI with modded bios, 12.3 drivers.

I haven't actually tested every game out there, but in theory all openGL games are supposed to work better under Fixed mode. (eg. Alan Wake--which is good news for all of us :)) Maybe minecraft needs a specific configuration or driver to work better. I only tried 2 openGL games so far, so more testing is always needed.

But a majority of mainstream games worked well for me under Dynamic mode. Someone should make a wiki of every game that runs well on this laptop. Here is every game that ran well on my system (35to60FPS @1366x768): BF3, Crysis 1& 2, Dirt3, Batman AA&AC, SKYRIM, CODmw2 & 3, Deus Ex HR, Mass Effect 3, Split Second, Ridge Racer unbounded, ResidentEvil5, Left4Dead2, AssassinsCreed revelations, LegoSWIII, Portal 1&2, Bioshock1&2, Rayman Origins, HalfLife series. Games that ran better on fixed mode were: Virtual Tennis 4 & Rage (but Rage still has freezes & hitches from time to time since it was always riddled with problems; I've tried many configuration fixes so it's atleast playable).
