Did you installed AMD Chipset drivers? (latest 13.9)
-
-
"AMD catalyst mobility cannot be downloaded due to incompatible hardware/software on your computer. Your computer does not contain proper graphics adator".
(Do you have another link to download 13.9 chipset drivers that you are using?)
Do I have to do a fresh install using DDU on my graphic drivers (LeeKM version) & install the chipset right before LeeKM drivers? (I found your post here>> http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/601808-k53ta-best-deal-ever-could-466.html#post9444370).
update: I didn't reinstall any graphic drivers..see below.
Update: Well I used 13.9whql by LeeKM & custom installed only the usb 3.0 portion and it fixed the ports usb 3.0.
But for the past 6 months I've been having another problem with my USB 3.0 WD Mybook HDD not being recognized by the usb 3.0 port. It works fine in Usb 2.0 ports so not sure whether it is a hardware issue with the WD my book or the Laptop usb 3.0 port. It's been a bummer not enjoying the super speed of usb 3.0 on that device. Anyone have similar issues and a fix for this?
Update 2: My USB 3.0 port has been working all along; The problem was with the USB 3.0 cable; I never thought the cable could get partially damaged preventing 3.0 connection (cable worked fine in usb 2.0); Only figured this out by buying a 2nd usb 3.0 harddrive. -

Everything worked out for me so far. Getting the new GPU drivers to work via LeekM and using a k10stat 2GHz lock profile and the performance is more than acceptable now. Just a few questions I am left with:
I can't change my monitor's brightness any longer, neither through the GPU's control panel nor the Fn + F5/F6 key combination. Is this a common issue with LeekM drivers?
Is LCD OverDrive a viable feature to use?
Did anyone succeed in getting the display to run at 75Hz or is this simply not possible with this laptop?
Thanks. -

Yes that sort of issue is quite common with modified drivers.
You can overclock any display not using optimus/enduro on an Nvidia/AMD chip, each display will reach a different frequency. -

Hey all. Haven't chimed in here for a long time but wondering now what people would recommend as the current equivelant of this laptop (as in, <$600, equivalent GPU performance for 2013/2014).
Mine is still used on a daily basis but has been relegated to HTPC usage as the plastics are pretty much all shot around the hinges making it really rough to try and use except in clamshell mode. Seems not worth spending even $100 to try and fix at this point...
I read back about 20 or so pages and the last thing I saw that looked like a recommendation was for the Asus N56DP but that was about 6 months ago. Just curious where K53TA users are turning to next! -
There's really not a lot out there right now that's great value for the money. After Christmas keep an eye out for machines with GT635M or AMD 77xx or 87xx series GPUs for < $600. The other option is to keep an eye out for open box sales at places like Microcenter or Fry's. Also keep an eye out for the new Intel Iris series of integrated GPU which should be a bit more powerful than the older 6650 series but not crazy. given it can get this performance while sharing space with the main processor and still only use ~35W or so, it's quite impressive.
I picked up an Asus N56vz open box / refurb for $630 or so at Microcenter and it was in great like new shape and runs great. That's an Intel core i7 QC CPU and an Nvidia GT650M GPU. Powerwise this thing stomps the older K53TA pretty hard, and normal price was in the $850 to $999 range. those kind of deals can be sweet, but don't hesitate to return open box / refurbs if they don't meed your expectations or have problems. -
But I think we are all ready for something many tiers better than a 6650m based on the chart below: Graphics Card Performance Hierarchy Chart - Best Graphics Cards For The Money: December 2013
In another year or 2, I'm hoping the lowest gpu we have to consider in a budget priced laptop will be a GT 660m or radeon 7870m...or even better(gt680m or 7990m) on some lucky deal. (until then, I may turn more to budget desktop gaming.) -
Newer chipset drivers are available for windows 7 and windows 8 from asus. Just need to select the model K53TK on the support site, it seems it has almost identical hardware...anyways the drivers install just fine, work great in windows 7. I updated from the latest ones available for the K53TA to the newest K53TK drivers and running 13.4whql for the graphics side of things.
How do I go about installing windows 8 on my machine without erasing the asus recovery partition? I would like to get 8.1 on this notebook, I just have been hesitant as I do not want to lose the recovery partition. -

hy, yes you still not have enabled sata3 6gbps...so,
look for this over the internet, its name is amibcp mmtool and it's 2mb
then go inside the rom file and modify like in my pic, if you need the rom file tell me , i have already modified!Attached Files:

Edit :- finally! It worked.. Thank you so much.. I switched from ahci to ide in bios.. Saved and exited setup and then again reverted back to ahci. It worked then! Thank you so much once again.. -
you are welcome... !
see how easy it is...but if you don't know, it's hard...of course you have the correct hardware to support sata III/6gbps
i'm glad for you is sorted now .
also put some pic speeds so we can see what you can do...
in the same time the your ssd can stay in cd bay because both ports are the same speeds. mine is there, hdd on sata0 and ssd on sata1 .

hello guys i own this laptop, well my model has the amd a4-3300m (which is dual core cpu) instead of the a6.I m looking for a new laptop and i came across an asus x550 which has an amd 10-5750m and its gpu is the 8670m and it costs 420 euro,so do you think this is a good deal?Would this be a good ''upgrade'' compared to my asus k53ta or isnt it worth it?What else laptops on that price have better value for money?thx in advance guys
-
Same problem here. Going to use your link (thanks!). Similar problem on my old ASUS F3SV, which I owned before the K53TA.
TL;DR version:
Thanks for the link! I'm going to have to do that for my broken K53TA-BBR6 Top Left Hinge Area.
Similar hinge problem happened with my previous ASUS F3SV laptop; the upper left hinge just started seizing before warranty ended, but I didn't know what was going on, so warranty came and went... as did my laptop's bottom casing at that hinge area (cracked all the way through... was a common problem with many ASUS laptops made around that time). Now that F3SV is my home theater PC (HTPC), by removing the LCD, plugging in a USB WiFi antenna, and hooking it to my living room TV (if the above temp fix doesn't work for very long, this K53TA may replace the F3SV as my HTPC in a very short time from now... lol... facepalm).
Pretty sure the hinge started seizing on my K53TA as well, which caused too much tension on the casing in the upper left hinge region. Today I finally opened my laptop today to see what was going on. The seizing is causing the nuts that are glued to the casing to crack the plastic on the inside risers that the case screws screw in to. All 3 of these are my left area hinge risers... 2 of these are bottom case plastic risers that the metal hinge arm holds onto... the other 1 is on the top case riser that the bottom case screw feeds in to.
If you open and close your laptop and are noticing the hinge is floating (it should only have an exact motion of open/close, not up/down or left/right) or the top/bottom casings are separating when you open/close the laptop, it's VERY likely that inside your case there are broken plastic risers that used to hold the manufacturer's glued nuts (these glued nuts are what hold your case screws and hinges in place)... or the glued nuts fell out (mine had all broken plastic risers). This could be due to a slowly seizing hinge, which I really think is the ultimate issue.... so even if you do the above linked fix, eventually, when the seizing becomes really bad, it may just be too much tension on the nuts/plastic and your entire corner of the laptop casing may crack/break... so ideally, with the fix, it may be a good idea to replace that hinge... but if you're just trying to squeeze a little more time out of the laptop like I am, just do the fix and... this final part might help... cross your fingers
Lesson?
ASUS F3SV laptop hinge issue: hinge cracked laptop's lower left casing from the seizing hinge pushing on the casing too hard... ASUS K53TA laptop hinge issue: hinge cracked internal pieces in same area... Buy another ASUS laptop? Only if ASUS fixes this issue at their cost OR they state as part of specs "with reinforced hinge area" (something to that affect), which I don't think they'll do; if not, they've lost an 11+ year customer and prior fanboy. The design for both models were terrible for these hinge attached areas of the laptop, or they just used really bad hinges; I have an 11 year old laptop that still chugs around with no hinge nor other design issues... old Sony laptop that puts these two laptop cases' quality to shame. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
It's a good deal, but many games will find the CPU weak and can have dramatic performance impact on them.
Therefore, you should only buy this model if you are really short on budget, otherwise you should be looking at Intel + Nvidia combo, which will cost more. -

Well it looks like the graphic driver support for our 6650m dual graphics system may have finally reached the end of its course (after just 2 1/2 years), based on the latest thread LeeKM wrote about "AMD Enduro or PowerXpress™ technologies are currently not supported by Mantle".
I hope I'm wrong about AMD dropping support....but atleast Leekm's drivers worked for us for the past 5 months thru 13.12whql. So any game we play from now on will only depend on these drivers or older ones. It was a nice run & I wish there was at least another year of support. So if this is it, then I'll be turning to my desktop for latest pc games and use this laptop for everything else that still works great (should still be fine for general purpose for 3+ years).Popeye-K53TA likes this. -
Just after I thought we'd never see newer graphic drivers possible on our laptop, a new user made it possible; but I'm still not sure how good it works, or if it's even better than past 13.11beta and 13.12whql drivers.
A user named V-FrIeNd made the first mod APU PowerXpress fix driver based on latest 14.1 drivers:
14.1 beta 1.6 for Win 7 64 bit & Win 8.1 64 bit[/U]: (it works for his 6620g+6650m, so it should work fine for us too.)
note: there won't be "mantle capability" since our gfx are non-gcn type graphics (mantle only supports GCN architecture); but there seems to be the option for Frame Pacing on dual gfx, but not sure how effective it is.
UPDATE 2:LEEKM also made a driver that's like Vfriend' PX fix APU and Intel>>
http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=386348
I have tested LeekM's new driver to work on my Win7 64bit laptop so we have the choice for updated AMD catalyst, display driver and functional switchable gfx.
Update 3: Game performance may have become worse than past graphic drivers eg. Batman Arkam origins is 5-20 FPS slower than 13.11beta9.4. "frame pacing" feature for dual graphics was reported to reduce micro stutter a little, but I didn't see any improvements; this driver had worse PC game performance on Batman while normal tasks feel the same as past drivers performance. (so I have reverted back to 13.11b9.4 which has been the best for me the past few months.)Popeye-K53TA likes this. -
I fixed it. Also, was thinking about doing the loosening, like you did, before seeing your post, but the Asus tech told me it wouldn't do anything... and I believed him. Glad it worked for you. I'll try it on my old hinges tomorrow just out of curiosity. Update from the next day: loosening the nut totally worked and I now have a second set of hinges.
The long version:
My To Be Continued, continuation:
So, I bit the bullet. Ended up ebaying to purchase the top/bottom casing, then bought some hinges from a nice seller in Canada. Just finished slapping it all back together for like the 7th time, lol. Here are some notes in case any of you are going to refurb your K53TA.
First! A warning and disclaimer: using any of my below info may damage your laptop and you are doing so at your own risk! If you're going to follow any of my instructions/advice and end up breaking something, or hurt others, including yourself, you only have yourself to blame, not me. And with that being said, read onward if you want.
1) Touchpad:
If your new casing does not come with a touchpad already glued on, then you're screwed. JK. I thought I was. Ended up carefully prying off the touchpad circuit board from the back of the old unit with a flat head screw driver (I initially tried a really tiny flathead, but it felt like it'd snap/damage the board, so I switched to a larger one that seemed to work much faster and didn't feel like it was going to crack the coveted trackpad)... little by little from around the edges, a bit at a time. It had some tacky clear substance, kinda smelled like petrol, so I headed off to ACE and purchased some Devcon Home Silicone Adhesive - Clear (good for metal/glass/rubber/plastic). Used my fingers to remove the remaining old material, then I had to carefully reshape the circuit board by hand because prying it off kind of warped it somewhat. Was not difficult to do, just took a little time to get it just right. During the flattening I would place the circuit board against the new casing to see how well it layed against the new to-be glued on area. After flattening, I just applied a layer of the Devcon and used a scrap piece of cardboard from the packaging to smooth and thin the Devcon. After application, just slapped it into place and applied pressure to the 4 corners and middle area for about 5 min, then applied pressure all over (not too much) for a few more min, basically massaging any potential gaps to flatten it. I really didn't think it'd work, but hey, had to try! Working now as well as it ever did before.
2) Blank Screen on boot (no power to LCD)
This is the issue that I had to RMA my laptop countless times to Asus before they fixed it (it used to happen randomly and they wouldn't tell me what the cause was.... even after they fixed it.... it was probably this the entire time!). Long story short, after fuming for a while during take apart (and put all the way back together) #6, I basically dissected the laptop. It ended up being that the LCD cable had disconnected from the back of the LCD. The LCD cable is behind the LCD and has a plastic covering saying to not touch it. Well, hell with you warning label! Put on some nitrile gloves, peeled the warning plastic aside, reconnected it, boom, fixed.
3) LCD Bezel
Make sure top casing is removed (the casing that the keyboard lays on). After that, take off those little black circles along the bottom bezel (I used a really tiny flat head screw driver). Removing the rubber circles reveals 2 screws; remove them and then use something to pry apart the bezel along the outside. I just used my finger nails so I wouldn't damage the edges by prying with metal... now that I think about it I should have used a credit card... oh well! Take care not to break the bottom part that hides the metal hinge arms and wiring. Also, make sure not to accidentally pull on any wires or you may be back at my note #2!
4) DC Power Jack
On many old laptops I have worked on, the DC Power Jack is soldered onto the Mobo. It is not in this model. All you have to do is carefully pull the DC Power Jack out of the little area they house it in (it is glued in with some tacky material... seems like the same material that was used for the touchpad, but I could be wrong). After dislodging it, just undo the wire from the grooves it is tucked into and then you'll run into a little black piece that seems stuck. Again, glued in place. Just carefully dislodge this too and you're good to go in putting this in the new casing if it didn't come with one.
Now to enjoy the fruits of my labors with a refurbed K53TA that I will no longer fear (in the near future) cracking in half at the worst possible time
UPDATE: This morning I tried loosening the nut on the hinges I thought were bad... and... it turned out I could have saved time and money if I just loosened them... that's what I get for listening to the tech (he said he used to work on Asus laptops so I thought his advice was good). All it took was about a 45 degree turn and they loosened up a good amount. 90 degrees gave too much play. Well, now I have a set of replacement hinges in case these new ones go bad, although the new ones were pretty hard to move around so I may loosen them too. I think the main design flaw is that Asus used plastic in areas that have way too much tension. Only 2 points of retention to the plastic; totally not enough points of retention and the tension just destroys the plastic risers over time with repeated opening/closing.Popeye-K53TA likes this. -

**However the only bug with that driver has been the loss of LCD brightness control. For other Leekm drivers, LCD brightness could be retained if you first installed official AMD 13.4whql and then overlap install LeeKM's mod. But this didn't work for 13.11b9.4. It's a trade off you have to make for the best possible game performance.
**Also you lose the USB 3.0 port function. To fix that: following Leekm's mod installation, then "custom" install 13.9whql leekm driver selecting usb3 options, and all will be fixed.
There was also a 13.12whql by Leekm but I never tried them since 13.11b9.4 has been great.
I made a WIKI with all the links to graphic drivers by LeeKM, extra notes about our laptop etc here>> http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...607232-k53ta-owners-lounge-9.html#post8489750 -

Lucky I kept a copy on my laptop. Since these are 3rd party drivers, there is no guarantee we can get these again from Leekm in the future, so it's best you keep a copy & backup these drivers to disc etc. Here, try the links I've upload below.

-All I can think of is to try again making sure to do a clean install.
eg. first uninstall old drivers the normal way; then use DDU 11.1 in safe mode to further clean radeon drivers. Then I install 13.4whql, and configure switchable graphics(high performance for video players, browsers,&skype). Reboot, and disable driver signature, and finally install 13.11b9.4 LeekM drivers.
If it still doesn't work, then you might want to try LeeKM's other drivers 13.11b9.2 or 13.12whql...but not sure what to do after that but stay with 13.4whql. -
atoneapone, I dont mind having it, actually makes me glad, cause on old "AMD Catalyst 13.11 Mobility Beta V9.4 SG Fix(APU MOD)" had them too and thats the reason I wanted to downgrade. Will keep this ones for now, I wanted to say its strange how it appear... from nothing. Were installed clean btw.
On another note,
installed Assassins Creed 4 Black Flag and NFS Rivals, impossible to play, all at minimum with result of 3-4 fps in both games. Anyone had same? On my ancient PC with 4 GB Ram, Phenom II x3 @2800MHz and ati HD4850(1Gb Dram, ddr3, 256bit) runs smooth. -
I'm still using it for light gaming, AC Black Flag can run 20fps+ so i don't what's wrong with your machine Popeye. CPU is overclocked to 2.2Ghz and GPU to 700/1000 runing 13.12whq fix by LeeKM.
Even planetside 2 is playable which i'm playing right now beside path of exile. -

hello guys.
after 2 years my notebook finally got a problem.
it seems like the discrete gpu(6650m) is broke or whatever else.
the artifact occurs while playing games then poof BSOD happened.
what ive done:
-reinstalling driver (been done this over 9000 times literally)
-reinstalling windows (7 and 8 64bit)
while reinstalling driver i found the main problem.
it seems like the BSOD only happen when i use the discrete gpu (crossfire/high performance)
the only solution i think is to use integrated APU (6520g) as the main GPU and then disable the discrete GPU (6650m) on devices manager.
but the only problem here, windows resolution degraded to 1024x720 (at max) after disabling discrete GPU and the driver (CCC) didnt detect the integrated GPU (no amd graphic adapter installed?).
then i feel like it's better idea to disabling discrete GPU then reinstalling the driver (so the only GPU driver installed is integrated GPU). then the same problem happens, CCC didnt detect my integrated GPU.
any thought here? -
No idea,voodoo12. Does it output on external monitor at better resolution? I'm no computer tech, so I wouldn't know where to start on laptop hardware, except to make sure what the problem is. I'm not even sure if you really burned out your dgpu or if it's software related. Did you overclock the cpu or gpu much & monitor overly high temps before it went bad? any overheating issues that may have lead to burning out the dgpu or any other clue to suspect breaking it?
Like any electronics, at worst, you may have to toss it and sell it for parts and get a whole new laptop or find out what's wrong and repair it yourself if it's not too costly. Eventually all of our laptops will die, but I'm expecting 8+ years before anything like this happens to us. At least you can still use the laptop a little bit at low resolution for general/internet purpose. -
ROLLED BACK TO 13.9 WHQL,still have overdrive for gpu and cpu, and great improvement in latest games I allready installed: Assassins Creed 4 Black Flag and NFS Rivals. Temps at max. 82, fps not great, ~20, but decent for such a bad optimised games
-
What's the deal now?
Is AMD not supporting our crossfire setup anymore? Just when I couldn't hate AMD more, they go and stop supporting the 6650m, saying I don't have a proper graphics adapter. F U AMD.
Also, how do you unlock the locked/grayed out apps in CCC ?
Trying to view Youtube 4k video, but default graphics make playback choppy as hell. -

Hi all,
I am wondering if there is a step by step guide somewhere on optimizing this laptop. I have had this for a few years but I feel like it isn't running up to its potential. What are the best drivers to download, and can anyone give me more information about LeeKM drivers? I don't believe I have ever installed these.
Also, does anyone know which SSD and ram sticks are best for this laptop?
I am sure these questions have been asked before, but I appreciate anyone who can help me out with some of these questions.
Thanks! -
The latest 14.1beta 1.6 mod by LeeKM wasn't as good for games-less FPS, laggy. But maybe with those drivers, you'll have better luck with unlocking the locked/grayed out apps in CCC.
Here's LeekM's past few drivers if you haven't tried them yet: (they all require a fresh install by uninstalling prior drivers & then use DDU in safe mode for a clean uninstall.)

13.12 whql was the last good driver. It was more than two years so it was a good run on this little laptop. It still push some new games, mosltly online and runs just fine.
I'm about to sell mine in day or two for some little cash, it was a good machine overall for the price i've payed. -
guys i rolled back the drivers to 13.4 and since then my usb 3.0 port doesnt recognize any device anymore. How can i install drivers for my usb 3 port?
-
So on my most recent install, after installing Leekm's 13.12whql (or 13.11b9.4 in my case), I reboot, and then install Leekm's AMD_Mobility_Catalyst_13.9_WHQL(PX_Fix). But for this 13.9whql, I choose "custom" install > then "deselect all" component selection, and then recheck only the AMD USB 3.0 host controller and hub driver. This fixes just the AMD USB 3.0 port without changing the ccc & driver to 13.9.
This bug may not occur if you choose to install Leekm's 13.12whql. Undying said Leekm's 13.12whql was the last good driver, so maybe best to try those next.
