Thanks for the heads up, I will def try this out tonight.

And I just installed the 11.8 CAP2, wasn't sure how much of a difference it would make, but I am going back to the Official 11.8 drivers from ASUS

i have also turned off crossfire for DX it seems to run smoother this way, making me want the a8 more

I have played on the big screen 42" Samsung in 1080 already, but my hdmi cable only goes so far and it's sorta awkward, my wireless keyboard doesn't keep up well enough, might be time for an upgrade... BTW did we confirm if this had Bluetooth or not???

Actually surprisingly enough I noticed a drastic improvement in the lateral tearing I saw in Deus Ex after making the cooling modifications. So yes I noticed a difference. But Deus Ex still is so damn glitchy, hopefully readjusting the AF will help as Disgustipated suggested...but sounds like you're talking about the banding issue, you need the bios update on Asus website

No I have not done this, but that sounds like a good next step, will report back to you when I give it a whirl...

FYI gumba, putting the pc in hibernate is enough to reset the fans to normal.

Still no word on whether an A8 will work though, right?

nothing yet, there's a guy in another thread thats going to try the a8-3530mx, gonna see how it turns out for him first before I make a purchase.

BTW Just got things setup for gaming last night with my 26" Sony Bravia, nice little upgrade from the lame ASUS screen. Running 1280x768 and looking pretty solid

Hello... I've bought this computer 2 weeks ago and the only problem i've seen so far is heat. I'm running a +- 83C in BF3 at high, no OC at all. I'd like to modify the stock heatsink. Do you think I'll be able to add a 5v fan directly over the cpu? like the red square on the picture? I found one on ebay with almost the same size as the cpu and only 6mm thick. thank you

Gumba or anyone who knows, I ordered a refurb K53ta-bbr6 but I just checked the model number on the bottom of it, says "K53TA-1BSX"

CPU-Z claims it has the 3400m with an HD 6500M series and I've got a sticker saying it's a 6720G2, so everything seems to be in order, still has me worried.

Should I assume it's just a code for it being a refurb? lol

Yes I've got the same thing than you. When I received the box I was like "! NOT THE RIGHT LAPTOP BLABLA.." I opened it and it was obviously the good one lol

Had that useless POS Bloatware Asus live update crash mid update and lost all the drivers, after re-installing them via the website, It claims to have 1.5gb of Vram off a 6520g

I emailed ASUS directly with the model and S/N.....

The 6520g is the APU, the 6650m is the linked adapter. When combined in asymmetrical crossfire, they create the 6720g2.

Download AMD System Monitor, it'll show the 2 adapters and the "6720g2" label will be clearly stated for your machine. Mine currently shows 6620g and 6550m, 6740g2 combined as I upgraded to an A8-3500m.

I also upgraded mine identical to yours; however I think I'm doing something wrong with the thermal paste application OR the re-assembly.

I used BF3 to get it hot for like 10 seconds, I don't think I should load it up again as it hit 107C.

Does any1 know how to tell which die is gpu1 from the photo below; is it the apu or the discrete gfx? could it be that I got a little bit of the thermal compound on the resistors on the die?

Update 1: Or could it be the thermal compound on the gpu ram is prohibiting the heatsink from coming all the way down?

Update 2: I'm begining to think its some of the thermal compound got on some of the components on the chip the die is connected to.

Yikes, that's pretty friggin' high! I'm pretty sure the APU is GPU1 as it's the main adapter. What thermal compound are you using? A lot of them are non-conductive, so having it on the resistors wouldn't have much of an effect. Under-application is more dangerous than over-application when it comes to heat. Surely it'll be more efficient if you are in the perfect range, but poor contact will cause major heat issues.

Is there a manual for opening this laptop? I plan to at least replace the thermal compound...

Sorry for bumping this thread, but I have a question. Where can I get a metal mesh like the one you used? My laptop is overheating on stock without any overclocks. It reaches ~79 C when I play TF2 alone.

I will be opening it to reapply thermal paste, but I want to make a vent for the fan like you did. I just need the metal mesh. Where can I get it for that size?

i know this thread is a little old but i was wondering if anyone has had any luck upgrading the apu to an A8 or the video card to say a 6750m or 6770m.

can probably get a fan mesh and cut it down to size. stores like ncix have them. or you could do what i did, if you have a drill, drill out th profile of the area you want. using a 3/16 or 1/4 bit, just drill a gridlike pattern when the fan intakes.

from my exerience, getting a laptop cooler with adjustable fans (fans that can be placed under the vents) is the best way to cool a laptop. drilling grid-like hole patterns where the cpu/gpu is located and having the cooler fans directly blow air on them is the best way. this does raise the temps inside the laptop, BUT lowers the temps of the cpu/gpu which is what you want.

let me know if you need help, i can post some pics of my modded laptop/laptop cooler.
