I just got an N56DP and I'm running Arch Linux on it. I wrote this little program to automatically turn on the keyboard backlight on keyboard activity, and turn it off after a few seconds of idle time. The code is posted in the Linux forum, if you're interested. It probably works for other Asus models as well.
