Keyboard Beep Playing Games

Hello,

This may sound like a stupid question, but I can't figure this out for the life of me.

In the middle of a playing counterstrike (haven't played in over 5 years), my N51 keeps beeping at me. Sometimes it's only when I press a single key, like space or "D". I've turned off the beep in Device Manager and turned off sticky keys. It seems random as to when it starts.

Anyone have any ideas that I'm missing here? This is really annoying...

Laptop keyboards don't have n-key rollover.

This means that they can't detect key presses once you have a certain number of keys already pressed. Trying to do so can create errors resulting in the beeps you have mentioned.

This is really prevalent in FPS games since you can easily press 2+ keys simultaneously as part of normal play.

Are you using an external keyboard or just the laptop keyboard?

If your using your laptop keyboard, can you try to replicate the same thing with an external keyboard?

or vice versa.

 

I'll have to try and recreate it. Would this be eliminated by using an external keyboard?

This is using the laptop keyboard. I don't own an external keyboard anymore (haven't owned a desktop in a long time). If I can attribute this to the laptop keyboard, I may have to purchase one.

n-key rollover is only available on high end gaming keyboards.

Thus if you just got a generic external keyboard, then not completely. The key combination to cause these beeps, though, vary between keyboards so it may disappear since the keys that you commonly press may no longer be affected by that problem.

 

As I said, I haven't played this game in a very long time and the old Logitech I was using at the time never did this (it was not high-end). Weird.

I guess it will just be as it is unless I can replicate it and determine a different cause (not going to spend $100+ on a keyboard). It got to a point at one time where it would beep if I hit the spacebar or the "D" button or a couple others (not at the same time). Weird.

 

I am still unable to purposely replicate this....

It happened more than a few times earlier today and it seems totally random. It's as if something happens and then even some single-key presses (spacebar for example) cause a beep and then a lag in the game. Or sometimes holding down a single key ("D" for example to move right) will cause multiple beeps.

This stops for a while if I close the game and re-open it...

ETA: Anyone have any other ideas?

 

might wanna check your hot keys settings for any programs installed on our computer.

I used to have this problem where a hotkey combo would try to intitiate during gameplay causing the so called "ghost beeps".For example (left-ctrl + shift + D or Vent speak + duck + move right >_<) combo would be pressed occassionally but for my utilities program *ctrl + shift + D* was the command for start defrag D drive or something like that. All I did was change the hotkey values to blank
IMO computer beeps are caused by something trying to happen, but is unable to do so for w/e reason(like gaming ).

*edit* read post again, you're also getting an error were single keys are causing beeps, this issue is usually caused after a key combo is pressed(start program or w/e), AND then the single key command is in error because there is no command associated with the depressed key (usually to do with text input but not always).

one question what type of laptop is it? the same as your sig?

 

I just disabled the Hotkeys in the registry.

It's funny, because you just described the situation better than me and you aren't even here.

The way you described it seems like exactly what is happening. SOME combination of keys is attempting to start, or starting or a program. THEN, single key presses are causing beeps, or holding a key causes multiple beeps. One thing I forgot to mention, which goes along with what you said is after this occurs, I can no longer use the keyboard to purchase in the buy menu. At that point, I must use the mouse to purchase. This goes along with the computer opening another program as well. I will see if it continues to happen with Hotkeys disabled, although I thought Hotkeys only involved the Windows button. Thanks a lot for the input. More is always welcome.

P.S. - Yes, I am playing on the Asus N51Vn in my signature.

 

Do this next time u can't buy in buy menu or the keys beep,
alt-tab out of game and see what programs (or processes)
have started, make sure to note before playing what is already
running.
Also, make sure hotkeys are disabled in any programs running in tray not
just windows registry.

 

I think we're on the same page here. I tried this very quickly when in the buy menu one time and didn't see any more active windows than before I started playing (albeit I didn't run task manager to check). When I went back into the game, I still couldn't use the keyboard to buy. I thought maybe switching out and back into the game would do it, but it didn't (atleast not that time). Excellent input here, and I think we're on the right track.

 

I'm going to try and recreate this, sadly the laptop with my steam games has been RMA'd :/
But I'll install it on my other one, which one did u play source or 1.6?
Can u also give me a list or what starts when u boot up ur computer?
I find the easiest way to find this is through msconfig.
Maybe if I see your list then it will jog my memory on what I did last time.

I'm playing 1.6, I don't own CS:Source (atleast not yet).

Update:
It just happened twice during a session of playing and here's what happened.

First time:
Would start beeping with single key presses. I used alt-tab to exit the program, then re-entered and it was still happening. So, I used alt-tab again, opened task manager and there were no extra extra programs running. I then reopened the CS window, and the beeping was gone. LOL

Second time:
Started beeping again with single key presses. This time, the windows cursor was showing up in the game (another reason to believe a program is attempting to open IMO). I used alt-tab and opened task manager, returned to the game and the beep was still there. LOL

I feel like I'm going crazy or something. LOL

 

Wait a minute.

So the beeping is occurring in-program, or is it originating from the laptop itself?

When you say it's "beeping" I assume it's one of those error beeps that originates from the motherboard.

 

I'm not really sure how to answer you question. It does only happen during the game and it comes through the speakers or headphones, whichever I am using. It does sound like an error beep, but one could never know.

 

I think I MIGHT have found the cause of this. When pressing Control and Space together, this shows up on the task bar:

how about a reformat and test games without installing anything other than the needed components installed to check if it is a software or hardware problem?


oh lol i see, youre changing between languages, you should press shift plus tab again when your cursor icon pops up or whatever the hotkey for switching between languages is.

 

So, this will continue to happen even though I have disabled hot keys?

 

YES I remember now u need to disable the second language, it basically changes your keyboard layout making it essentially useless during gaming, hence the beeps
I was thinking it had to do with txt input, which was the case once the hotkeys changed the
language for your keyboard.
I'll confirm for you exactly once I get home from grocery shopping.
In the meantime go into the languages section of control panel and try disabling any extra languages you have installed, or disabling the default hotkey to switch language

I was trying to figure out where these settings could have been. I disabled the other languages as well as all key sequences in the control panel. The icons no longer come up on the taskbar when I press Control + Space together. I will probably be playing a little more tonight and I will let you know if the beeping has stopped. Thanks again for all your input.

 

yeah i thought it may have been that lol -.-; i remember times when doing cs source and the buy menu wouldnt work, was due to foreign language being inputted

 

I'm played twice since disabling the languages and it hasn't happened since. I'm guessing that was it.

If if starts happening again, I will update this thread.

Wish i had seen this thread earlier. It's a somewhat common problem on asus laptops. glad you figured it out yourself.

 

Had the same problem with my new Asus computer.

When I play any FPS game, my laptop would beep every time I pressed a button and it would lag the whole computer to sh!t. Holding the any button down would make it beep consistently. Disabling the second language hotkeys also fixed this problem for me.

awesome. i have been trying to google this issue as well. when i play left 4 dead 2, sometimes i crouch and jump with ctrl+space and itll beep or change my language. i can usually fix it by pressing ctrl+space again but its still annoying none the less. thank you for the fix. ill have to try it when i get home later!

 

THIS was what my problem was with running Wolf:ET & other FPSs that use shift+alt on my new ASUS G73... I disabled stickykeys and togglekeys, but there's a default language-changer hotkey on my copy of Windows 7. NOT ANYMORE! No more beeps! Nice catch guys!
