Hello! I have an ASUS F3JM with a networking problem.

I've tried reinstalling the drivers, but to no avail. My F3JM refuses to believe that it has a Cat5 plus on the side of it. There's no Local Area Network, 'a cable is currently unplugged' popup in the system tray. There is no icon to click on and edit in 'my network places' And I dont know how to get it back. It was there before. My guess is that I disabled it somehow in my recent frenzy of trying to get my wireless capabilities to function while the notebook was unplugged. I succeed with that endevour, but LAN has disappeared. Its not like it matters THAT much, I DO use my wireless feature all the time. But there could come up a situation where I would have to use a wire for internet. I just want to have all my bases covered.

    Thanks!!!

Go to Network Connections. (There should be a link to do that in the left-hand panel of My Network Places.) You'll see a couple of items there, one of which should be Local Area Connection. It should say Disabled. Right click it and click Enable. And there it goes.

P.S. I always keep mine disabled because that icon in the taskbar annoys me.

If the network card is diabled it will not report "a cable is currently unplugged." This is more likely a hardware issue. Check all of your connections first.

Possible things off of the top of my head if everything looks fine:
    Bad cable
The other end (switch/router) has a dead port, in wish case try a different port
The connector on the laptop has gone bad

He wrote that "a cable is currently unplugged" does not appear in the system tray... I think? It's a bit unclear.

yeah, the pop up notification bubble doesnt come up, there's nothing to enable. under device manager it has 1394 Network Adapter and Intel Pro Wireless Network Connection. Should there be another one? Should I start a 'new connection'?

No there should be another one in there. While in device manager click on "Action" and then "Scan for hardware changes." Check under the
"Network adapter" section again. If it doesn't come back I would give Asus a call.

Can you fire up device manager and check under network devices if you can find the realtek network adapter?
