I just bought an i7 K55VD laptop from someone. It's running fine, but I noticed the adapter's power plug has one prong broken off. (see picture) Can this harm the computer on the long run? Or perhaps it's some standard mod.

It's not a standard mod in any way although it is standard practice for older house holds with only 2 prong outlets. I say standard but not good. This is against NECA codes and is leaving you with an ungrounded circuit to your laptop. I would recommend buying a new cable to replace that. The cable is 2-3 dollars and it will be safer to use.

I agree just grab a new cable since the brick itself is fine.

Thank you for your reply, Cavell and Meaker, I'll get a new cable then.

It's a ground lift and safe to use as long as the 3rd prong is completely gone and not at risk of shorting.
