    Hi,

I have an Asus X5DIJ about 2 months old, and as i use the laptop only at home
so 99%of the time its plugged in, im thinking maybe its better to take the battery out

the battery is only light so makes little difference to the weight, and it is more practical when i move the laptop about to have a batery pluigged in - instead of turning it off then back on when i plug it in.

but i am happy to leave it out if its better for the laptop and the battery last for longer - as the battery for this laptop is quite pricey

    any thoughts?

    thanks

How often is that 1%? If you're shifting it desk to desk and immediately plugging it back in on a regular basis, leaving the battery in is more convenient.
Is the power cord located in a place where it can get pulled out while you're using it (whether by a child, pet, errant foot)?
Do you mind hibernating instead of standby? I've had my laptop on standy, lid closed, and picked it up thinking it was in hibernate.

    *edit*
Also, is it inconvenient to have the battery closeby so you can just place it in the laptop when you do need to use it off the charger?

These are just questions, but it should help make up your mind. No single answer works for everyone (lots of battery threads all the time)

I dont think the application in which he is using it is important, I think he was more looking for a direct answer to : would taking out the battery out of the pc make the battery last longer? Because hes plugged in to saving the battery life span by unplugging it, is I think is his hypothesis, and it is mine for sure, Id definitely like an answer to that.

    thanks woofer,

im not really worried about turning it off and on again as it boots/shuts down quickly, its more that i dont want to kill the battery by always having it in and connected to a charger.

does it make much of a difference to the batterys life 'expectancy' by leaving it in and charging whenever its in use/turned on?

Taking the battery out will (almost) always increase a battery's lifespan as opposed to leaving it in because it's not exposed to as much heat ((almost) is in there for someone who will plug in some obscure link proving me wrong in 0.01% of cases). Battery University is linked all over the forum, so a quick search should pick up threads and links on ideal storage practices.
In my mind the more important question is "Is it worth bothering to do this every day." My laptop is plugged in all but 5 minutes of the day or so, when I'm carrying it to the TV and back to my desk. I bring my charger with me and plug it back in. I don't really use it on battery, but I don't really bother taking it out because it's a real pain in the butt and I honestly don't care if my battery life is only 1/2 or 1/3 in 3 or 4 years because I never disconnect for more than a few minutes at a time.

Have yet to notice much degradation in the 3 yrs I've had my laptop (still get 4-5 hours usage just like when I first got laptop). I keep my battery in my computer all the time since we have occasional power failures, though I do like to use the battery in class at least 1-2 times a week.

Some Laptops the battery is there just to call it a laptop...take the g73 for example....Your not gonna use the thing unless an outlet is close by, so the battery is more for if the power suddenly goes out on ya.

battery life is measured in discharges and recharges. Most batteries i believe are rated at 500. Leaving it in shouldn't have any impact on the life of the battery since it will only charge when needed (they have internal cicuitry that detects when charging is needed)
