    Hey...

I have almost ordered my W3V... from StarPCs. Well, the answers were much better, and the people from Proportable never replied to my mail...

Anyway, I was reading about this, and I am putting down a lot of money for it.,.. compared to, the Gateway 250, HP dv1000, or IBM T43...

Now, is there a problem with paint? And heat?

Or are they just small things?

I just want to be sure it's the best call to put down 1700, when I can get a laptop with more memory and larger HDD for 1300...

By the way, is it worth it to upgrade to 1GB memory, if I have 512 and the X600 memory?

Well, the heat is an issue for some, but in general, it is not worse than what you will find on laptops with comperable speed/size.

As for the paint, I think that is more of an issue with people having residue on their hands than a manufacturer problem.

Also, I am not sure how set you are about buying from StarPC, but last time I checked, Geared2Play is offering a free stick of 512mb memory (making the total 1GB) with the purchase of a W3V.

Ok... but I am getting a 3% student discount...

I don't know... G2P is offering that... but i haven't heard from ProPORTABLE YET...

So, the buidld quality is very good, right? Better than Dell, Alienware and HP, right? How=?

    Any other thiughts? :asus:

Two things - I haven't been witness to a single email in 4-5 years we haven't returned within 45 minutes during business hours, so you must be mistaken or your email never got through.

There isn't another notebook that is going to compare to the W3v, so you're skewed reality of getting more for $1300 is just that...

    - EDIT -

You're the guy who couldn't email us and wouldn't talk on the phone because you were calling from some foreign country, correct?

g2p has a 2.5% student discount. the heat is only an issue when the computer is being pushed a bit, otherwise it shouldnt be much of a problem. make sure u undervolt and all that if u want cooler temperatures. and of course, the build quality is superb.

I read justin's answer on the heat issue, and it is indeed very good... same as the palmrest... so thanks!

I mailed you again... in case it gets through this time...

I was thinking about the dv1000... for someone not that knowledgable in the computer area... what makes W3V better? THe aluminium? Fiber? Or is it plastic?

    :asus:

    Thanks!

w3v has a aluminum brushed lid and is also partly made of carbon fibre.

The DV1000 is mostly firm plastic but its still pretty rigid, which cuts costs down by alot.

So that's one of the things... then that build is better...

Did you have problems with heat?

I think you have to decide why you're buying the Notebook. I needed a 14.1" wxga laptop for primarly surfing the web, watching movies and the use of office applications.

I really like the Asus product but I couldn't justify the price differential between it and the Compaq V2000Z ML-37 that I purchased for $921.00 after taxes and rebates. More than likely I'll be replacing it in two years as new products and technology change so why spend almost 1.5X - 2.0X the money for a laptop that will be worth a fraction of today's price in 2 years? It also won't deliver 1.5-2.0X the performance either even if the Asus has a more solid build.

If you think the features of the Asus really are worth the price differential and you'll be keeping it a long time, then go with the Asus.

    Just my 2 cents.

What makes the ASUS better than the HP?

    1. Dedicated graphics (x600 vs intel graphics)
    2. Build quality
    3. Looks
    4. Global warranty
    5. It's not an HP
    6. It's an ASUS
    7. Uniqueness factor

Honestly, if you just want to watch movies, surf the web, email/word process, you really dont need to spend so much money on a laptop. Get a w3v if you want to do all of that, play the latest games, and possibly carry your laptop with you everywhere, otherwise a w3v is just overkill.

There is a cheaper version of he ASUS W3V. It is called the Z63a. It is has a different color scheme and doesn't come with the x600 card, but it is essentially the same otherwise. If you're looking to save some money it's a good option.
