To be honest, I have my desktops running all night, but not my laptop. I leave my laptop on hibernate and unplug the AC adapter because before I go to sleep, I make sure it is fully charged. I don't want power surges hitting my laptop. It could damage the battery.

Now if you have to leave your laptop on, because it is doing a task, then turn off the LCD...but other than that, you are just wearing out your laptop. The fans have to constantly spin to cool it and etc.

I have my laptop running on average 13 hours a day, that includes battery and AC combined.

What Milestone said is very valid.

I leave my notebook on all night some days. If you notebook runs fairly cool, or if you have undervolted it, I'd imagine it's much easier on the parts to run 24/7.

Watch out about heat, which is your biggest enemy.

If it was mandatory to turn off your computer every now and then, it would probably say so in the manual or there would be a sticker on the computer. You can leave your computer on for as long as you wish, though some part will broke after a lot of usage. Although you should turn it off if you have no downloads or other activity going on with it. The stand by mode is handy if you need to continue quickly.

If you have activity going on with the computer, leave it on.
If you don't, turn it off or put it to stand by / hibernate.

Remember that your laptop has 2 years of warranty and if it breaks during that period, it's free to repair it :)

I leave my laptop running at night only if I'm downloading a big file or performing a system operation that takes a long time. Otherwise I shut down and unplug it from the A/C adapter.

I've only had a few days where my laptop is not on.

A notebook cooler is recommended if you want to do that.

i leave my G2 on all nite without any probs whatsoever.
My power4gear settings is everything is turned off after 20mins(monitor, HD + standby)
I hate hibernate cause it takes so long to reboot
Only other thing i do is to not have the battery in its bay. In fact i never have my battery in unless im mobile.
If you have a good APC surge protector with onboard battery backup then theres no worries.

for all you thank think it is ok to leave your desktop and laptop on alnight it definitely is. That is a fact. It is also fact that if you choose to do so you are taking away life from your fans, hard drive and pretty much the rest of the components. This year it is a bit easier to clean most asus models however leaving it on when not needed also clogs your radiator which does need to be cleaned once every half year if you keep it on 24/7. that means for every one here that has a warranty you may not be able to do so if cleaning requires lifting the heatsink or anything else that has a warranty seal

I leave my A8Js on during the night, rendering my 3d artwork all the time. I've done this with every laptop i've owned. (MSI 1029, Inspiron 9200, Z70VA). Haven't had any problems so far.

That's the one thing I can think of that you want to watch out for. For instance, on my Z33, in order to clean the CPU heat sink I would have to break the warranty seal. Since I have almost 2 years left on my warranty, this would be a bad idea.

However, I have it undervolted and the fan runs so slowly at idle that I don't think it has the airflow to pull much in in the way of dust. Temps are pretty much the same as when I got it.

I ran it overnight a bit when I was in CA, to keep the house electric bill down. Just leaving AIM, etc up for people to message me. Put the 3-cell battery in so I wasn't stressing out my 9-cell keeping it fully charged all the time...

I guess if your computer is working (downloading, rendering ... ) then fine, leave it on during the night but hey, turning it off will use less electricity, save you money and create less carbon emissions.
