Okay, so here's a question for everyone:
Can anybody share what the pros and cons would be for a Lenovo T43p vs Asus W3J?

(I know this may be like comparing apples to oranges, but Lenovo is having a highly-tempting ultra-hardcore-super-uber-sale on the T43p)

    T43:
More professional (best for business my opinion).
Made of plastic rather than metal (has its pros / cons)
    Best Keyboard
    Price?

    ASUS W3j
    Decked out
    Good Price
    Great Screen
    Outstanding graphics
    Best performance
    Stylish

All depends on what you are going to use it for. Again id get the thinkpad for business. Buy the w3j if your interested in gaming / other intensive graphics needs.

yes it is comparing apples to oranges, and it ultimately depends on your need and how cheap the T43p is..

    W3J:
-superior graphics card.. the x1600 will blow away the x300.
-glossy screen (plus or minus depending on personal preference)
    -better looking (again personal preference)
-price tag will be consistent everywhere, around $1799 I believe.
    -about 5.5lbs
    -vent on the right side

    T43
-titanium chassis and great keyboard Thinkpads are known for
-x300 card is a very low end card
-can be had with an sxga screen (but standard ratio)
-slightly lighter (the 14" model is, not the 15)
    -vent on the left side
-has nipple for your finger if you dont like the mouse.

    Both
    - built well, very little, if any flex
    - both have modular bays for additional battery or HD

The biggest difference is do you want a widescreen 14" lappy or a standard screen? Standard would be a deal breaker for me since I watch alot of movies on the road.

WOW... These comments are a great help, guys 'n galls! Ya'll are awesome. Thanks. KEEP THE COMMENTS COMIN'! :)
(I should note, though, that the particular model of the T43p that I'm looking at comes with an ATI FireGL V3200, and the price is $1999.)

with that price, i would lean m ore towards the W3J.. do you game?
ah another thing.. the T43 only has 2 USB ports, which may not be enough for some.

Not to sound like a parrot here, but gaming/gpu needs would be the clincher here in my opinion, as most of your more intensive games as well as video editing etc. will require more HDD space as well as GPU power, both of which you'll get in the W3J. I myself had also checked out a Lenovo before finally deciding on the W3J because of the HDD and GPU.

As a personal aside, I've always been a fan of the "nipple" for my pointing device as opposed to the touchpad. I am much happier with the precision and speed I have, although I could just be totally inept with the touchpad. Regardless, my decision won't be impacted by the nipple-less-ness (?) of the W3J.

Even if gaming isn't a priority...I'd get the W3J anyway because you're getting more for the money.
Not only does the W3J have the new platform + a better video card... but it's less expensive and more stylish. Also, Asus keyboards aren't too different from IBM keyboards in terms of quality...

    W3J FTW!

Does a 14" widescreen display have enough real estate to use video editing software?

Thats kinda debatable. if it were WSXGA i would say yes. personaly i wouldnt want to have to do alot of photoshop work or video editing on anything less than a 15in screen. go look at bestbuy or something at the dv1000 see if you can deal with it.

Not sure about the Asus W3J, but on the Lenovo (IBM) T series....

It is pretty sturdy built. Well rounded business class laptop. It is very stable and include a lot of applications to self check and manage the laptop vs Asus.

One problem is don't expect to have the latest and greatest video card option on the laptop. Usually standard HD comes in 4200RPM or 5400RPM. No 7200RP drives.

Heheh .. another trackpoint fan here; though I'm probably going to go for the w3j as well - I'll be needing a real mouse for gaming anyway, so it's not such a big deal.
For those occasions when I'm sitting outside enjoying the weather while I work, the touchpad is just fine.
I'd say unless you *really* like to beat up your laptop, the w3j is the better choice.
The FireGL card has only 4vertex/2pixel processors; compared to 5 and 12 for the X1600 ... and unless you're into CAD, the workstation-class gfx are entirely unnecessary.

and about the screen real-estate: I've found screen resolution matters to me a lot more than size. 1280*800 isn't really enough for serious editing, imo - and that's all you get on anything 14" or less. I'd much much rather have 1680*1050 (WSXGA), but for that you're looking at 15.4" screens at a minimum. You could also get 1400*1050 or 1600*1200 on 15" 4:3 aspect screens.
