No, I'm asking because I want to send in my proof of purchase myself, and I'm not sure if there's some file standard I have to adhere to. JPG it is, or maybe PNG. Whatever.

I chose .jpg simply because it's easy to view and I dont know who will be viewing it and on what machine/software.

What did people use as proof of purchase? I sent in a printout invoice from overstock.com along with a copy of the master packing slip...

    Did anyone use anything else?

I scanned my web confirmation after I printed it out, and scanned the invoice from Best Buy all as .pdf. Then linked the item's page and company's contact for the other ones.

I've never participated in an upgrade program like this before. Does anyone know if I'll be able to perform a clean install with the upgrade disc? I'd rather not perform an upgrade of the existing Vista o/s. I'd rather do a full clean install of Windows 7.

Hmmm,interesting... I sent them the Web confirmation page and my BB online receipt as both PDF and XPS file format, I did it aeons ago and I initially thought I did something wrong because it sat at this annoying "Pending for POP" for ages, even until 1 or 2 weeks ago(last time I checked). After reading this thread,I was about to ask the ASUS reprensatative on here what was the problem with my docs, but I just checked and my order is now in "Pending for payment" + "Pending for deduction" mode. So,perhaps it's just a matter of waiting.

Bah,I think it's just a case of FIFO and definitely a good sign for U and all the others in this status.ASUS themselves say that it will be on a 1st come,1st serve basis.U were one of the 1st to acquire the G51 and enroll in this upgrade program,so I'd say that people like me who got it later and did the steps to get the upgrade disc should perhaps just wait and see.It seems it will really start in its earnest tomorrow,as they say U should cancel U order before the 12th if U wish to do so.

@Element - your link just said exactly what my other 2 links said.
you need vista already installed to perform the upgrade.
the closest you can come to clean install is to first clean install vista, then upgrade it to win7.

    see: http://www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia_term/0,2542,t=clean+install&i=39756,00.asp
    for definition of "clean install"
    also from your link:
(and note that kuri asked if he could do a clean install)

...oh. my. god. a clean install means NOT UPGRADING, but installing an ENTIRELY NEW OPERATING SYSTEM. which is what you're doing. yes, as I have already stated twice, vista must be installed at the time you insert the disk, this is to confirm that you have a license to the OS. it will then back up all of your files to a folder called Windows.old. it will erase the rest of your drive, and it will install windows 7 TO that drive. a CLEAN. INSTALL. I am done trying to explain this to someone so thick.

Hey guys, thanks for all the input. I guess my question was a little confusing as 'clean install' can be interpreted two ways.

dk999's clean install is from a newly formatted hard drive, while EIement's clean install is using a hard drive with Vista already installed, then performing a custom install to achieve the same results.

I found this link which clarifies it a bit:
    http://community.winsupersite.com/b...upgrade-media-how-does-that-work-exactly.aspx

Both dk999 and EIement's scenarios may apply to me. At first I'll be doing a 'clean install' over Vista. But some time down the road, I'd probably want to format everything, in which case it looks like I *may* need to re-install Vista, then do the Win7 install. I guess we'll see!

    Nice post, Kuri. +rep

And I guess this is why you can only upgrade from 32bit Vista to 32bit W7: presumably, the 64bit version of W7 UPG runs a 64bit setup program, which wouldn't run in a 32bit OS. Does that sound about right?

Actually the 64 bit is the only real TRUE clean install from upgrade disc. Since the key will work on a 32 or 64 bit disc, if you have a 64 bit disc and do the upgrade it must full erase the old 32bit install to get the 64bit instal on the drive. There is no Windows.old directory or file.

So the closest to a "Clean Install" is actually going from 32 bit vista too 64 bit Windows 7. In retrospect though this also is the most destructive towards any original data too..........

For information, if like me, you were unsure if it was even possible to order the 64bit W7 UPG Media to upgrade 32bit Vista, I got this reply from the Microsoft Upgrade Team to my query.

So for those of us purchasing new notebooks with 32bit Vista Home Premium and the W7 UPG Coupon looking to upgrade to 64bit W7, the only option seems to be purchasing an additional 64bit W7 license.

You only need a 64bit disc, supposedly the key itself is usable in either the 32bit or 64bit versions...........
