Hopefully I will be purchasing either the G72 or G73 laptop in the near future and was wondering how many years I can expect the laptop to last.

I really don't game much and would probably never put it under heavy load.

    Any estimates?

Years if you take care of it. I assume if you are as meticulous about caring for your laptop as some of the members here, it will probably last you longer than you want it around :D You may end up selling to upgrade, although who knows how things will go technology-wise. I purchased my G71Gx in October of 2009 and it's already an "old model that's out of production". The hardware in it is fantastic, but I will highly recommend that you invest in a cooling solution to stretch the life of the components a little further.

What sort of cooling solution? Is Arctic Silver and the like really worth it?

Or do you mean the laptop pads with fans built in?

for me any kind of thermal compound is worth it. (example: IC Diamond)
it decreases gpu temperature by 4C~10C.
using a laptop cooler is good too.

I have an Asus G1 that was purchased in late December of 06.

Still going strong. Rock solid using Windows 7, I have everything running with creative use of newer Asus drivers, for instance all the different control buttons work.

It was my first laptop and really has been great for me. :D I take good care of my stuff so it looks almost like new, with just a few scratches on the lid.

I use a Zalman NC2000 cooler with it.

I am looking at a new lappy, but have frustrrations on one thing or another with a few Asus as well as a few Sager models.

my z70v lasted me nearly 4 years before the lcd screen decided to go blank. i expect to use my current one for 4 years too, maybe longer. there doesn't seem to be anymore 12.1" laptops that are speedy (core 2 duo, NOT atom) with good design these days. at least to me :D Lenovo makes some 12.1" with good components, but I don't like how their laptops look!

I Have an ASUS G2p that I have had for 3 years.. built in wifi is dead.. using a usb for now. My 6yo and 18yo kids have been using it for 2 years.. its abused.. spilt on and generally treated badly but runs like a champ. I just clear the dust out and had to replace the keyboard once (4yo ,at that time, decided it was fun to pop all the letters off). I can say onre thing about asus laptops.. they are TOUGH!!!

My W3J is going on 4 years, still my main comp. It was in a higher class during its release. But Asus makes quality products.

you really don't need to get the G73 or 72 if you don't game that much. Unless you're going for a desktop replacement. Keep in mind that these laptops are tanks. Don't expect to carry them around. If you do plan on moving around with it and you don't game then look at asus' N seriers (15 inch) or UL series. The UL series are light and thin.

I think the build quality is pretty good, not a thinkpad or a toughbook, but if you don't abuse them, it should last a long time.

If/when I order online, I'll have the IC Diamond thermal compound put on the CPU and GPU, so that should help.

I am VERY careful with my things and always keep them in pristine condition. I intend for this laptop to be a desktop replacement but I might venture out with it (since they include an awesome backpack) once in a great while. I am hoping this laptop last at least 4 or 5 years, is that asking too much of it?

You're getting reat advice here, so heed these warnings. Heat is one of your laptop's worst enemies. I have owned many laptops in my time. (nearly 40 years old) I have owned the Asus G1S X3 for a while now, and I work it HARD. I play crysis alot on it, and she get's really hot. Keep in mind, mi Asus only has an 8600m GT, so Crysis only likes DX9 and Medium setting.

My suggestion, which mirrors many responses in your thread, is to order from a reseller HERE on the boards. Pay the $35 for the diamond thermal paste, and use a laptop cooler with it. I use a cheap Targus $30 or $40 cooler and it works great. I would also pay the extra $89 for the 3 year warranty.

Good luck with your tough decisions.!

Yes depending on the laptop just be mindful of any concerns and it should last long. My g51vx can get very very hot depending on the game and resolution I'm using. To compensate for this I have a cooler and one important measure I take is to make sure the fan on the laptop actually stops when gaming. This is telling me it has cooled the components enough. If I'm running a game or whatnot and the laptop fans never shut off, I'm pushing it too much so I lower the resolution or do what I have to so it's not so stressed. I might not be playing all maxed in native resolution but it will last for a long time.

My Z71V had its motherboard and video card die around 3 and a half years after I bought it. I chose to pay to replace them because it was cheaper than buying a new computer, and everything has gone well since. I will have it for five years in April.

Most laptops, especially consumer models, are not very likely to hit 4-5 years without any issue.

It will help if you clean it out often and treat it well, but that's no guarantee.

I agree, asus has a good reputation, but its current hot G series suggest a change of plan...it's like they are trying so hard to make the price drop, that they overlook quality regarding the cooling system. (edit: the new g73jh looks promising though)

About the 8600m gt, i didn't know it could play crysis at medium Oo I have the eaxact same card (bought in 2007). Why is everybody saying the game is so heavy then? I play Assassins creed1 on directx9 too, but that doesn't mean it looks bad, on the contrary, its one of the nicest games I've ever played.

I'm posting this on my z70va that I bought about 5 years ago now. My motherboard died about 9 months into owning it but was covered by the warranty with no problems directly from Asus.

My GPU fan died about a year ago and I've been unable to fix it.

I've used this laptop just about everyday for the past 5 years and it's still running fine. No other problems to speak of. Asus generally has very good quality to go along with competitive prices.

Just like you, I purchased a z70v on Aug 2005 and happily used till Aug 2008. I sold it for $600 cash and purchased F8Va-C1 (in my sig).

Hopefully, I will be able to sell this one for a decent price in Aug 2011 and move on to a new ASUS.

well laptops can easily last 5 or more years and some doesn't.

i have like over 10 laptops which all are going good except a compaq 700us which the hinges died than the screen went on it about 3years after the warranty expired... other than that it works but need to buy a screen and hinges for it.

    i also have a compaq 1692 which is 10years old now :)

ony problem i had with it is a inverter about 2years after i bought it than it sit for about 2 more years than i found out it was ony the inverter and now its working like new even still this day.

i cant really list all the laptops but i list one more my tank of a laptop dell inspiron 9300 that sucker went threw hell it got spilled on which was grape pop... lucky it didn't get inside much but it did get inside by the fans than got fallen on by a 140lbs person full force which didn't do a thing :)

than heat was the other problem but didn't do a thing too it i swap out the video card it came with nvidia 6800 go too a 7800gtx which the m170 xps has sense the 9300 and xps was the same except lights and it hot sometimes up too 115c.. been using it like with no problems till i got my g50vt :)

but the dell is still going strong even till this day which is 5years old :) i did had to make dell too replace the screen 8months after i got the laptop sense it was geting pixels but after that its been going strong.

im hopeing for the same with my g50vt-x5 and my asus 1201n even tho i problee wont be fully useing them in 3 or more years but still gona keep them.

i had my asus g50vt-x5 which is my first asus for about 8months or 9months and never had one problem with it.

but ya like i said anything can last a very long time and something can last ony couple months too a year or so.

So wait are you guys saying 73 shouldn't be moved around much? I plan on moving it around the house 5 or 6 times a day and then to the weekend house on weekends......
If I wanted to sit in one place I buy a desktop.

All of my laptops would still be running, if it wasn't for the Nvidia video cards - 2 of mine (1 in a Clevo, 1 in an Asus,) and my brothers HP(8800GT that was just past his 1 year warranty at the time,) all had the Nvidia video cards die on them. I'd try and stick with ATI if you can; I've got an ATI video card in my m6810 that's 6+ years old and it still runs like a champ.

moving around shouldn't be a problem sense my asus laptop and netbook is always moving and going to work with me :) asus g50vt-x5 and the asus 1201n which mostly with me now.

too me a laptop is not a laptop if its going sit on the desk always :) which is what my desktop is for.

my dell 9300 went everywhere with me when it was my main laptop and its still going strong too this day :)

well you are buying a 17.3 inch laptop. To add to that you said you don't game much so you don't really need the high end graphics card. The 73 will probably bring with it some heat problems as well. I don't know if you will watch movies on your laptop a lot but that might the only reason to buy such a big laptop. I have a 15.4 and I think that is already big enough for movies.

The G73 is also going to weigh in at around 8.5 pounds so moving it around often isn't recommended (power cord weight probably not included).

If its just for normal day-to-day tasks, some web surfing and some movies seriously look at the UL series. They're light and thin.

If you plan to do some light gaming as well then look at the N series. Some medium-high gaming but need to maintain portability then go for the G51. Don't forget to invest in some thermal compound and a cooler for the G series though.

Pulled the weight from this... same model just different parts

I could easily downgrade because I really don't game or put much pressure on my computer at all, it's just every time I see a little bit cheaper computer (like the one you suggested), I think, for just $300 more dollars I could have a better GPU, a lot bigger HDD, double the RAM, not to mention a backpack and gaming mouse (which are huge pluses for me),

But if I could have a notebook that is like one step down from the G73 in all aspects (except screen size, I'll only buy a 17"), but is more in the range of $1,000 than $2,000, I would be VERY interested.

Not al nvidia cards are bad, only the 8 series were badly constructed and overheated as a result (I have one too unfortunatly)...

I wish I could sell my z70v, but I think the inverter related to the lcd screen busted, and by now there's really no point in selling it as it won't get much money :(

It's been a longevity issue for me. How can I trust the newer models won't have life span issues too, if they haven't been out for that long? NVidia's left enough of a bad taste with these, I'm staying away until I see they can make a card that'll last 4-5 years again, which is why I feel it relevant to the OP who's looking to keep his laptop for that length of time.

If they were bringing the Tesla cards out now, maybe performance would outweigh these issues. But with what's on the market now, the ATI cards are more powerful and I have not had an issue with them being reliable yet.

My 1st Asus, a Z71V, is still going strong in my sister's hands. That's 4 1/2 years. My current G1S-B1 still kicking after 2 years, but it's already had the motherboard replaced. (due to an issue unrelated to the 8600m GT) But it hasn't been a smooth ride. My overall reliability is under 6. (Win 7 x64)

oh my bad. Well I think a 15.4 is better personally. You have the same GPU on a G73 and a G51 but the screen is smaller on the g51 therefore your GPU will be able to perform better on the g51 which will increase futureproofing capabilities.

P.S. Why buy a laptop if you're only going to game? Get a desktop with specs 2x better for half the price.

My G71 only lasted three months and the motherboard burnt out. My case may have been a fluke, but dealing with Asus's poor excuse for customer service has left a bad taste in my month. If you do buy an Asus laptop, pray that it doesn't break because otherwise Asus will try to rip you off at every turn.

only major problem I've heard is this overheating stuff. Lots of people with different asus laptops complaining about overheating. Thus just buy a nice thermal paste with cooler and you should be good to go.
