I went to my local store today and played around with G50VT-X5, it feels very nice. Really like it.
However, I am concerned if I will able to successfully install Linux on it. Have anyone tried to install Linux on this laptop?

I'm not sure but I think it will be a bit difficult to locate all the drivers. I tried going back to xp and my god it was a journey...went back to vista lol

.
Depending in your distro it probably will be plug n play. -

I run Debian GNU/Linux on my G50V as my primary OS (on it now), the only difference with the G50Vt is the video card, and the driver is the same. You can check out the Linlap wiki entry which I have mostly authored. On that page there is also link to a howto for running Ubuntu on the G50V which is very useful. Good luck!

Some features won't work on linux such as the OLED display. You'd have to use a 3rd party app to program it to show what you want.

Yes. I saw one app for this, I heard some people got it working.

Shouldn't be a problem, the wifi is a very common intel chipset and the graphics card is pretty standard compared to the custom variations that HP uses that require HP's own drivers.
The G50 runs express gate which is an instant on linux and everything needed to use it as a pc works so theirs obviously normal drivers written for it somewhere. Best to stick with a distro that includes proprietary drivers rather then the ones that only have open source drivers. These distro's have more out of the box luck with laptops. Main thing would be getting the right gpu driver if your planning on gaming. -
Right now I am kind of thinking to get either Asus G50VT-X5 or MSI GX620.... But I really love G50VT-X5 (nicer video card and just the feel of the laptop, also more USB ports.. few other things I likes and things I heard online about this laptop).

I used Ubuntu, OpenSuse and Debian before, but I plan to try out Mandriva once I get my laptop.
PS. ClutchX2, you got some nice review of that laptop -

If you need help just hit up the Linux forums here on NBR. -
Running Fedora 10 64 bit for almost 6 month, no problems

I installed Ubuntu once on my G50VT, and all the important stuff (wifi, GPU, audio) was detected immediately.

I had a recent problem with an update on Debian Sid AMD64 on my G50V with mute and volume hotkeys not working properly. If anyone else has had this problem, I just added a hotkeys section on the linlap entry. It has 3 methods for solving the problem so hopefully it helps. I'm not sure if this problem affects Ubuntu or any other Debian-derived distros at this time.
