I’m interested in buying an Asus laptop, mainly because of its record of reliability and what appears to be excellent customer support. There’s one thing holding me back: the lack of a “real” docking station connector. I understand that USB 3.0 docking stations offer very good performance, but they require drivers, and drivers generally require Microsoft Windows. There’s a very good chance that at some point I’ll have to run Linux on whatever I buy, and I don’t know how big a problem that would be.

I’m seeking advice from people who have used Linux on an Asus laptop with a USB docking station, or have tried to. Did it work? If so, how much pain was involved? If not, are there workarounds, such as running Linux in a VM under a host Windows system?
