A friend of mine is looking for a laptop around 800$.
When looking for my notebook, I think I saw Asus barebones that were really cheap.

    Heres what Im looking for:
    15" decent res barebone
GPU doesnt matter, can be integrated
    Santa rosa platform
    under or around 400$

    Thanks!

Asus S96S -- $550 (less if you Froogle it)
80gb HD from newegg for $60
    1gb of RAM for $35
    Samsung DVD-RW for $55
Intel 3495 wireless card for $20 on eBay
T5450 Core 2 Duo from khanhfat for $85

Total: $805 (or less if you get the S96S for cheaper)

    Totally doable. ^_^

Edit: Oops.. didn't see the CAD part, that makes it much more trickier?

But honestly, at that point, you might as well look into a Dell Vostro 1500.

Not at all. Asus does not make cheap-build like Dell so you have to pay. For your price, the options are the Dell 1501/vostra 1500 for 499 with basic config.

Best buy has a Celeron M based one for 399 right now but it's an Acer

Back in the days of the S96J, the variant without the graphics card only sold for $50 cheaper. Unless there's any pressing reason to get a barebones, you can't really build them for cheaper, especially when you factor in the cost of an OS in the budget range.

Compal might also have some barebones that you might want to look into, such as the IFL91.

The days of Asus making a broad range of barebones at various pricing levels are over. S62, S96, C90, and the still coming S37 series are about it these days, unless you want to get into the previously owned market.
