Hi guys, I'm shopping around for an external hard drive because I'm running out of space on my laptop already. Beside it's such a pain in the neck not having anything to back up everytime I format my hard drive for a clean installation.

Can anyone recommend any good brand or model?

    My favorite...

Western Digital Elements 640gb usb powered. No need for a/c adapter and it's only 100 bucks at newegg. Built like an anvil.

DIY, buy a 500G 2.5" drive and stick it in an enclosure yourself.

I have the X5 version and it has 2 HDD bays, I'm guessing the X1 does too. If you don't specifically need external then putting a second drive in that would be a neater and probably cheaper solution.

I was thinking the same. Since I only have one HDD now I was thinking of adding another one to this laptop. The problem is, I don't plan on keeping this laptop for long. I'm thinking about getting the new Alienware m15x. Besides, I want a portable external drive so I can bring it with me anywhere I go. I don't know any suggestion?

The brand really doesn't matter much. Western Digital's drives are alright, as mentioned before. Just go to the local computer stores like BestBuy and look at what's on sale. $90 - $100 for a 500GB external drive can be found easily.
