    Hi all,

I've been trolling the forums for a few days now and I cant' seem to find the answer I'm looking for so I joined.

    what I have:

    As Mobile S96S (Intel)

I updated the bios to 0205 (found the link on this forum) and ever since the 1394 network adapter has a yellow exclaimation mark over it and I can't seem to get it to work.

    2 Questions:

    1. What was the original BIOS version this notebook shipped with and does anyone have a link to it?

    2. Was there a setting in the original BIOS to turn firewire (1394) on/off? I don't remember because I already updated to 0205.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Usually settings don't disappear in newer BIOS versions so probably there wasn't an option.

If noone with an S96S is around to help you, you can just downgrade in sequence, starting from the next-to-newest and then moving down, until the 1394 works. I'm not sure about your S model, but for ensembles the BIOSes are on support.asus.com.

Are you sure that you have tried to install the proper drivers for the adapter?

That's a good thing if they do not remove options in the BIOS. I looked on the Asus CD that came with the notebook but didn't see a specific driver for firewire or anything labeled 1394. I'll keep searching.

Still no luck with this. the 1394 Network adaptor still has a yellow (!) over it in device manager and it's showing error code 10. I flashed to 0205 and 113 and still cannot get this thing to work. Anyone? only other BIOS to go back to is 0107. I don't see an option in the BIOS to enable 1394.

I'm officially dumbfounded. I flashed all the way back to 0107, 133 and 0205. The 1394 net adaptor still has the same yellow (!).

    1. I uninstalled it and let Windows detect it (didnt work)
    2. I tried uinstalling/reinstalling the modem, ricoh card reader, soundcard (didnt work)

If Windows is picking up this hardware incorrectly I wish I knew what the heck it really is so I can install the proper drivers.

Well, it seems it's not a BIOS issue. Flash the latest version...

Are you using firewire at all? Otherwise I'd just drop the thing and leave it with its yellow mark...

I flashed back to BIOS version 0205. Although I don't use Firewire seeing a yellow (!) in device manager bugs the heck out of me. (I'm obsessive can't you tell???). No other ideas how to fix this? I've looked through BIOS settings like 15 times and there is absolutely no options to enable/disable 1394 or Firewire.

No, I think there aren't any options related to firewire...

Come on, just let the yellow marker be until you really need firewire... then start worrying about it. I'm sure you have better things to do with your time :)

I troubleshoot computer problems for a living and have yet to let any slide passed me regardless of importance.

    Hi,

sorry for uping this thread but i'm in the same case.
My firewire port has a yellow mark (!) and the message "the device can not start (code 10)" appears.
THis is not my first xp install, and I'm sure i had already got the firewire to work.
I formatted again but still the same problem.
I have 0205 version of bios.

If you found the problem, please tell me.
    Thanks a lot.

[Sorry for my English, I'm French... :)]

The problem was caused by Intel's new BIOS update. They replaced my laptop and it works now.
