They are saying only Calistoga-based notebooks are running Merom without bios update. I don't really understand this, the S96j is Intel 945PM based. I thought that was Calistoga.
"Laptop Logic has discovered that the Asus S96J, also known as the Z96J, does not support Merom. When we inserted a Merom processor into our Asus S96J testbed, the laptop reported that the CPU microcode was unknown and refused to boot."
Kind of a bummer, I was definately banking on upgrading my CPU when Core 2 Duo is released. I sure hope Asus comes out with bios update...

MAJOR BUMMER!!!!! so much for the the upgradable processor then...would a bios upgrade (if they decide to make one) fix it?
-
I always figured it would need a bios update. IM sure the chipset can run it but whos to say laptop makers are going to upgrade the bios to support it. I mean they dont want people opening their pcs up and change cpus.

Isn't there a chance some coder can make a functional BIOS by himself?
Anyway, this is stated on the bottom of the article: -
anthing is possible. I wouldnt trust someones bios code for my laptop. not to mention they would have to make it for all laptops. You need different bios for every one.
I could see them maybe making a bios for whitebook models. But maybe not for ensembles. If they do they may wait months after the memorm is released. by the time they have a bios they may already start to move to the new chipset. again noone really knows im just guessing. -

I do imagine that Asus will have bios update for many (if not all) of their "built on Asus" models as well. The Compal HGL30 claims "IntelĀ® Merom design ready". If Asus is going to compete they will need to be compatible with Merom.

Looks like some notebooks will need bios update for Merom
