I don't know about the rest of you but my Asus DVD player seems to be making a lot of noise lately and vibrating - I can't imagine this is normal. Also, it only reads relatively newer CD's & DVD's but will not read older ones.

Anyway to tell if this thing is shot?

All notebook drives are going to be picky to a point as far as burning and it's based on brands of media.... in terms of reading it should read everything.... so maybe something is wrong with the drive or even make sure the disk is clean also.

Give Asus a call and they'll help you out... sounds like something that may be an issue with the drive and should be covered under warranty.

Sounds like your drive may be misaligned for some reason.
Since a CD needs to spin up, it could be that the rotation of the drive is cuasing some jettering, therefore creating alot of noise.

I would give ASUS a call and tell them your problem, I'm sure they can help you replace the drive if it's faulty.

Thanks. I didn't think the vibrations were normal and they started recently.
