How do you lower the volume at start up of ASUS W5 not the windows jingle but the one that immediately starts with the ASUS start before the windows tune. I can easily adjust the windows (XP) start up sound but nothing seems to alter the ASus one - its almost like an audible screen saver except it is at start rather than shutdown. This sound only lasts a second or two but I work i libraries and would prefer to lower it . Please advise.

The volume is going to stay at whatever it's set at before you shut it down... or at least that's been my experience. Are you shutting down normally or just holding in the power button?

Thanks Justin but even when I switch off properly ie START --> Turn of
with vol turned down the ASUS start up sound is still loud - but the windows sound is turned down OK - it is as if the asus start upis different and independent from the win start up. Maybe like a screenn saver type of thing - all know is that I cannot lower it yet I ca adjust win start up

Someone suggested loking for ASAU start up in the REg editor or even bios but I'm not too sure about this

I also have the same issue. The Asus startup sound does not go away even when I mute the volume before the previous shut down (normal shut down). Only the Windows startup sound was muted.

ARC, have you found a solution to this?

If not, anyone else have any suggestion?

Are you talking about the sound the asus makes when booting?
Check the bios. U can disable the startup sound there ;)

I don't have my ASUS yet, so I can only respond with a general suggestion. Most computers have a default key set for entering the bios, either "F1", "F2", or "Delete" have been my experience. After powering on the computer, look on the POST screen to see if it tells you which key to hit. If not, tap each one a few times until you find the right one. I know this is a very non-specific method, but it should work. Once you're in the BIOS though, I can't direct you one way or another as I haven't received my laptop yet (waiting for the W3J :D )

    Why don't I have a sound

The Windows one is OK, but I usually have my sound on the 1st level :p

Once I scared my class after turning on my lappy, because the vol was at max, and..... :p

    No more of that hah

Be careful in Bios. You can change settings that may mess up your computer.

Seriously what sound? Hrmm, kinda glad I don't have some bootup jingle, that would be annoying.

I do however have that beautiful Asus splash screen at start up. :D

Am I the only one? When I had my screen replaced for the red ghosting I noticed the splash screen, it's awesome. Wasn't there before.

Good news. I managed to get it fixed, and muted the sound.

I went to the bios (F2 for W5F) and change the "Play POST Sound" to "No". See attached pic.

    Thanks so much to all.

The sound came out right after you power on the machine, just when an ASUS logo flashes in the middle of the screen. This happens before the Windows startup.

Since joycecylam posted a fix, I thought I'd ask a few questions to the W5F owners in here...I was wondering If you guys could comment on what you think of the W5F so far??? Any other issues? How do you feel about the screen size? Have you tried hooking it up to an external monitor yet? If so, what do you think of the results?

Thanks for sharing in advance :)

It is a beautiful machine, and I like it very much. I was used to a 12" standard screen, and was a bit worried of the widescreen aspect before I bought the W5F. It took me a little while to adjust but it's okay for me now. Didn't hook up an external monitor, but rather, a DLP projector for presentation. The result is good.

I have upgraded to 1.5GB RAM. Super Pi result for 2M digits under AC power is 1m25s (w/ Power4Gear set at "Super Performance).

I don't game. I use the W5F mainly for office applications and web surfing. And actually, I have no need for the webcam, but it can become handy just in case, who knows.

Initially, I had a problem with the bluetooth setting but finally got resolved (see link).

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=1294899#post1294899

Otherwise, no other major issues so far. I cannot be more satisfied.

    Hope this helps.

if u dont wanna mess with the bios i guess a crude fix would be to jack some headphones or some earbuds in while the comp boots up. i usually do that if i forget to lower the sound on my laptop and i'm booting up in class.

Ooooh, kewl, I don't have that option. Kinda wish I did now :D

Is it a whooshing sound to go with the Asus splash screen?

    Thanks Joycecylam for the response.

The webcam would be handy for spying on people in public without them realizing it...and then emailing clips or stills to friends. That's what I'd most likely use it for :)

    LOL

Face it the other way, and you'll be gawking at people and not look that way, because you are looking at the screen!

LOL you guys crack me up~!

Loaf, I do the same thing, I just jack some headphones into the jack, but right now I can't because my speakers don't turn off when I plug in headphones, so my baby is in the service shop once again. 3rd time.

Hopefully everything is fixed this time without issues.

An addition: you can also adjust the volume at which the computer starts up from the BIOS (such that it makes the POST sound, but it doesn't make you jump off the seat :) )

I myself removed the sound completely, it was annoying me.
