Hello guys,
I hope this question haven't been posted before but I spent nearly a day reading all the posts on these 2 and couldn't find anything close from a clear answer.
Basically today the M51SN comes with Penryn CPU like the T9300 at 2,5GHz as the M50SV does.
Then the question is what difference do we really have at the end between these 2 laprops ? In term of battery life, performance, quality of sound, of display, weight ...
As well I'm looking to get a 7200RPM HDD instead of the classic 54000RPM :
1) Is there a real gain of performance (for example when copying multiple files small and large ones)
2) How does it increase the heat ?
3) How does it affect the battery life ?
To compensate the extra consumption from the 72000RPM I'd like to get a 9 cell battery. Has anyone got one of these laptop with such a configuration :
Asus M50Sv-A1 / Asus M51sN
Penryn T9300 2.5Ghz/GeForce 9500M GS
3GB RAM
200GB S-ATA 300 HDD
9 Cell main battery
What difference of performance will there be with such configuration ?
Can someone give me as well a weight for such a configuration ?
And finally what battery life can I expect when watching a divx with wireless on ?
Thanks a lot for your answers,
Greg

if you were to ignore the components
the m51 is based on the bottom end f3 chassis which is fine but it is bottom end
maybe compare it to an acer
the m50 is a new line, more like the g1s series a higher end consumer notebook. maybe compare it to a hp consumer notebook.
the hinges would be tougher.
theres nicer speakers.
Now the components could possibly be exactly the same the m51 usually comes with the bottom end lcd though. -
As for the HDD, if you pick an PC with the latest 320Gb or 500Gb 5400rpm harddrives they will be almost as fast as an 200Gb 7200rpm HDD due to the higher data density. So I do not really feel it's worth it, you get slightly more battery usage, slightly more noisa with almost no gain.
The M50 looks a lot better and has tons of features, better speakers etc etc. But performance vise I have no idea, with similar setups I guess they would be almost equal. -
m51sn does not have hdmi out, fancy altec lansing speakers, and a slightly different IMR finish,

M50SV 1300$: http://1toppc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=SRCH&Store_Code=GPS&search=M50SV
Thats a good deal for what you get, I also like the slightly more expensive M50SA but unfortunately its newegg exclusive I hear and buying a laptop from a e-tailor like that can be risky.
Gentech is the place to get it tho and they can put the 7200rpm drive in there for you if you really want it. -
Oh, and the M51 has both DVI and VGA out. M50 only has VGA... (not that it really matters to most ppl) -
I really like my M50. Besides what I see above I understand that it is much quieter than the M51 and has a less grainy and brighter screen than the M51.
The M50 has a spill resistant keyboard, the M51 does not.
I have the 7200 rpm drive, it's really quick and quiet--tho' in hindsight I probably wouldn't have spent the extra.
I'm giving mine a 9 to 9.5 out of 10. -
This is so true.
Not really a conclusive test but here are my results in Windows Experience Index:
320 GB 5400 rpm WD Scorpio (Stock drive of f8sn-c1) got a 5.3.
200 GB 7200 rpm Seagate got 5.5. -

Haha, I hate to single you out but never quote windows experience index as a form of a benchmark or proof of performance. Its a total POS and has no real values it makes numbers up for the most part.
If you really want to show the similarity in speed try something like HDTune which is popular around here. Data transfer speeds can be very close but the faster RPM drive still has a advantage in random seek/read speeds and honestly most of your files on the computer are lots of small random files not huge single files.
I prefer the larger data dense drives too, not for the speed aspect tho as much as the storage per dollar. -
Forget upgrading the HDD for performance reason's alone, they are so similiar it's not funny.
I just put a 200gb 7200rpm into my G1SN to replace the 320gb 5400rpm (as I thought it might be faster and I wanted the 320gb for an external enclosure) and ran HDTune on both of them and the results were basically identical. -
Thanks a lot guys for all your answers ...
Since then I found out that there is a lot of variant for each models and I don't seem to be able to get clear and full specs for each of them .... http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=247824
Anyway thanks again.
