I went to work last night with a very bright monitor, only to come home today to find my laptop off. I found that odd but when I started my laptop up, looking at my 22" attached monitor I saw the little box saying there were windows updates done. I looked over to my laptop screen, and it looked to be off. Upon closer inspection I could indeed see my background image, it's just very dim. I've tried turning off the Ambient Light Sensor and cranking the brightness, and dimming it either of which do nothing. I've pointed the flashlight my dad uses for Firefighting in the sensor and nothing changed either. Anybody got any solutions? I'm using Vista 32bit, and haven't had an issue until today.

Is it bright in the BIOS or when you reboot, at the ASUS splashscreen?

If not, I'm afraid it's hardware and you need to RMA. Possible causes:
    - dead inverter
    - dead LCD backlight
    - interrupted inverter cable(s)

Even after Fn+F7, the screen should be reset to ON when the computer starts. If that is the cause of the problem, then I will go hide myself in the closet for a week. :p

Sure have, I'm just bumming about loosing my laptop for however long :(

Edit: The screen is definitely on, just very dim. Perhaps a wire has came loose? Or maybe it was an issue with the update? ;( I'm probably just giving myself false hope.

    Possible causes:

    1) and 3) are relatively easily fixable by yourself. But since you're covered by warranty, just send it to ASUS, at least if you're in the NA there's no reason for which you should go thru the trouble of doing it yourself.

Yeah It was just a guess. I was highly unlikely that it was a mere Fn-F7 problem as the backlight should come back on when you restart the system.

It looks like it's either a faulty/loose connection, or a broken inverter. This should be a very quick fix, you should either find a local official Asus repair location(if you are in Asia or in the US) and go there without an appointment or go through their online RMA process.

I just read the warranty bit, and for canada it says they will pick it up at my door. Unfortunately, I can't remember the exact day I ordered it -.- Just the year/month.

2-3 day turnaround if you are in Canada or USA.
