I just purchased an Asus M50VM, and to my surprise, it couldn't pick up a signal in my living room, even though my z63a with its little Intel wireless card has an "excellent" signal. I upgraded my router to DD-WRT with high hopes, to no avail. Is the wireless card (An Atheros AR928X) just faulty or weak? Has anyone else had problems with connecting on this model? This is quite the damper on my happiness.

Edit: I installed the latest drivers for the wireless card, also with no success.

Edit2: I can pick up a signal when I'm up to 10 or so feet from the router, but no further. Is there any explanation for this other than "the Atheros sucks and the cheapo Intel beats its brains out"?

The atheros wireless card shouldn't be too shabby. Try update your router's firmware and see if that solves the issue. If you have a firewall on your M50, try disable it as well.

I upgraded the router's firmware yesterday, and my M50's firewall is disabled, but I can still only get 1 or 2 bars where my other laptop gets 4 or 5. The only explanation is that the wireless card is weak, or Vista is messing me up.

How about Vista updates? Also try changing the wireless channel to see if you can get a better signal.

Well, I tried updating the driver once again today, just for giggles, and now the computer seems to think I don't have a wireless card at all, and can't find the network even when I'm standing right next to the router. Marvelous.
