My laptop started acting weird when the mouse suddenly stopped working and Windows would constantly have a popup at the taskbar telling me a device connected to the USB port has malfunctioned and Windows doesn't recognize it anymore. After I take the mouse out of the port, the pop up continues to..pop up when nothing's even connected to any of the ports. I also noticed the webcam didn't work as well.

This is when I restarted, I would get stuck at the ASUS logo screen and the start up sound would occur every 30 minutes, as if it was rebooting again. Only until I plugged in the mouse it MAY(I say may because sometimes it won't) continue onto the Windows loading screen. I finally got to my desktop but was greeted with a BSOD and instantly got shut down. I boot it up again and did a F9 restore and restored the laptop to factory settings. After the recovery was done, the problem still persists, but this time I cannot even get to Windows because I'm greeted with a BSOD every time when I get past the ASUS logo screen.

Could someone tell me what on earth is happening and how I can fix this? I wasn't doing anything before all this, just on MSN and nothing else. I don't do very memory-consuming tasks all the time. I'm using XP if that's relevant.

Just call Asus and have it serviced. If a system restore didn't fix your problem, it then most likely is a hardware issue.

    Thanks for the reply hotweiss.

Yeah, my brother and I ended up finding out that it's gotta be something with the internal USB because the laptop would only boot up properly if the USB was disabled in the BIOS. Webcam, fingerprint reader, mouse or any peripherals connected to the USB ports don't work. I'll be giving a call to Asus tomorrow!

well, my mouse suddenly stopped working too, giving me the same usb devices not recognized popup you've gotten. Hopefully it doesn't go downhill from here, as I need it for college and I go back today. Webcam still works, but very slowly?, i never really use it.

edit: I tried rebooting, and at first it only showed the asus logo. I couldnt find an option to diasable usb from bios, but then about 15 minutes later, it worked, with all usb devices working again.
Time to back up everything, incase it doesn't get better.

Yeah, I would definitely back everything up right now haha. If only mine had worked for 15 minutes before I did a system restore so I could back up everything!

Incase it does start acting up again, how did you disable usb devices from bios?

If I can remember correctly, get into BIOS, then go to Advanced Settings then you should see USB<something>, just disable it from there.

To be honest this sounds like one of the devies plugged into that USB buss went bad... I have seen similar things working on notebooks and desktops... Its rare the USB controller go bad and most often another device plugged in causes problems... If your NB has bluetooth thats prob also on the USB buss...

Bad part is if you RMA this make sure you make ASUS test it for extended times because they may say "oh its prob the MB, and replace that" than they test it and it work for 10 min during the test, than you get it back and few hours latter issue back because its another part causing.

Yeah, I was using the tiny ASUS mouse that comes with the m50, it worked fine and I've been using it for 3 months now but it all of a sudden stopped working. The light under the mouse lights up red when connected to the notebook but the mouse won't move.

Thanks for mentioning the last bit in your response. I will definitely try to have ASUS test it more than once when I send it back.
