Looking for some advice. Preferably from some owners of these machines. Im making another trip to Iraq with the military and I need a laptop mostly for my entertainment needs. Im not terribly concerned with price but dont want to go overkill if I dont need to. Last time I was there a Z71V took care of business for me. Mostly I will play games like World in Conflict and Command and Conquer. Nothing online. Here's my concerns.

    1. Which will offer more battery life?
    2. Are the machines the same size and weight?
    3. Not playing Crysis, do I need a 9700 over a 9600? Is there a big difference?
    4. I like the smoothness of the M50 case but the G50 is also not hard to look at.
    5. Which one runs cooler? (dual hard drives and a higher GPU should answer that)

It will be indoors 100% of the time in air conditioning. Sometimes carried from site to site but mostly stationary. Happy to hear anyone's opinion. Thanks.

    1. I'm not sure...check the above reviews
    2. m50vm dimensions - 14.8" x 10.6" x 1.8" weight - 6.7 lbs
    g50v dimensions - 14.6" x 10.3" x 1.3"-1.6" weight - 6.2 lbs (thus the g50 is smaller...but not by much)

    3. you are comparing a 9700m GT (g50) vs a 9600m GS (m50vm)
the 9700m gt is far superior....not that the 9600m GS won't be able to run games....the 9700m gt will do a much better job

    4. what is the question.....IMO the g50 looks nicer

    5. hard to tell...since they are so new.....prolly the m50vm thought b/c of weaker gpu and processor.....as well as having only one hd rather than two

depends... if you are a heavy gamer I would get g50v. The only game I am now playing on my M50MV is Crysis (mix of medium/high and no AA at 1280x720) but I am not really a gamer anymore, just had recent urge to try out Crysis for the first time.

    Anyway, non gamer opinion:

    - G50v is too flashy for my taste, maybe if I was 16 I would enjoy all these LEDs and color scheme
    - I don't like the huge fan grill at the bottom, looks like it's not really meant to be placed on a lap.
    - Screen resolution is not great. I prefer WXGA+ on a 15"
    - More $$$ for non BestBuy model
    - Battery life probably a little worse

I stopped in at the local BB and took a look at their version of the G50V. Other than being a waste of time with the old Merom core, the laptop looked very nice but indeed is awkward in size. It's very wide and definitely looks like a 17" laptop. I would love to see an actual side by side picture.

Also wondering how long it will take someone to hack the OLED screen to display whatever they want. If its a serial interface should be no problem.

If I read from Vicious's G50V review thread correctly, the included software already lets you put pretty much whatever you want on it.

looks like live text, im talking about pulling live stats and sensor readings. FPS, Network throughput, email indicator, ect. If anyone ever dealt with screens like Matrix Orbital, you know what im talking about.

Anyone who currently has this laptop (G50), how is it to lug around?
Looking for pics next to another 15.4" widescreen laptop. BB says that the screen is actually 15.6" ???

I assume your talking about the screen...
so they actually changed the case for the BB version? Or just popped in a different screen?

Different screen its 16:9 with a lower quality/resolution.

The real models have the 16:10 screen with 1680x1050.

As for the OLED the software yeah it does battery, ram, and cpu + custom notes, email notification and maybe one or two other minor things. However the G1S they have got a thread on it where they have been doing custom things with it. So I am sure that it wont be too hard to take what they have done and apply it to the G50.

The thread is linked from the Info Booth under the name "Customizing the G1S OLED". It does need a bit of work though to get it working with the G50. Maybe predator_MF can help with that, he developed most of the stuff for the G1.
