I was pretty much going to purchase the G50, but I am still worried about the size, as I've been posting and rummaging through these forums. I need a laptop for college that can also play some games: World of Warcraft, Steam/Source games, and Diablo III, all at great settings with great frame rates.

The M50 is only $999 on Newegg while the G50 is $350 more. Is the extra cash justifiable for the G50? Will I be noticing a major upgrade, no matter which laptop I get, after moving from my current desktop with: AMD Athlon XP 2800, 1 gig RAM, 6800GT?

Edit - After looking at some more laptops, what about the F8Va-B1. More portable, though I have no idea how the GPU is.

I was in your same situation a few weeks ago. Although any of your choices will be a nice upgrade, I decided on the G50. Although it is a bit bigger, it really isn't too bad to take to class. It runs very quiet which can be beneficial. I had a G1 that was quite a bit louder and a few teachers actually asked me to turn it off! I also think the G50 is a smart move because it is a bit more future proof. Although the games you mentioned are not too demanding, there may be another game that comes out in the future that you want to play that is demanding. Watch for the G50 from newegg to go on sale, it's price has been fluctuating quite a bit over the past couple weeks.

Thanks barty. I've talked to someone else, who owns the X1, and he says it's fine to take to class and whatnot. I am concerned about the battery life however.

As for the price: Yeah, I heard it was $1200 (I may be off) a few days ago, and newegg brought it back up to $1350. I think I may just buy it tomorrow or Friday, seeing as how it's most likely a Black Friday deal.

Any other comments would be great.

If you worry about battery life, you could always buy a 9 cell battery from BTOtech, for about $160. I ordered a G50vt, and im very excited for when it arrives. I will have to take it to school/uni aswell. my decisions were based on various reviews of the G50vt series, and, although slightly bigger than your normal 15.4" notebook, its not all that heavy or bulky.
I can't wait for mine to arrive, I hope you choose the G50!

Well, I'm looking at the new ASUS N80VN-GP011C for its greater portability. Sure, it won't be as powerful as the G50, but it'll be much more easy to carry around.

I just can't decide. This is crazy >_<

No, actual confirmed measurements have shown that the G50 is 1.3 inch wider at 15.5" and weighs 7.2 lbs, which makes it nearly the size of many 17" notebooks. The posted dimension specs on nearly every web page are incorrect :(

The M50 is only 14.2 wide and weighs 6.5 lb.

The F8Va-C1 looks good as well. It's $150 less than the G50-X2 but has a Radeon HD3650. I'm not sure how those are compared to other cards.

So Asus' own page is wrong? I think it works out to be 14.7" there, if my math is correct. Too bad they didn't take advantage of the extra width to make a numpad with a more conventional layout.

    Yes, unfortunately it is.

One forum member posted a few weeks ago about a big hassle returning his G50 because of measurements that were off from spec - Eddie at BTOTech then did a measurement on a unit and confirmed the actual width spec (near middle of thread).

G50 and M50 are about the same size, but obviously G50 is bigger wide-wise (and thicker).

they are not THAT different in size, and I know this because I have both :)

Being so wide is probably why the 16:9 screen fits perfectly.

Thanks for the link. Well, I will be remeasuring the 15" Asus (G1?) backpack that I got on sale a year ago for $15 to see if the G50Vt fits...I think it will, but the padded sleeve inside might not cover all of it. Not that this will dissuade me from getting the G50Vt, but I prefer my surprises to only be pleasant.
