    Hi all.

I've dealt with a screechy and distorted sound coming from my laptop for sometime and it appears to be getting worse. Muting the sound will stop the noise, but it doesn't appear to be a Windows only problem as I hear it shortly after start up (or wake up) as the machine boots up. I've uninstalled and reinstalled windows a couple times over the past couple years with little affect.

The one thing I have noticed is that the noise starts more consistently when the machine is hot.. for example: near a forced hot air vent in the house.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of this?

You may have a hardware problem. If you mute your line-in or microphone does the screeching sound go away? I was thinking it could be feedback from mic gain until you said it happens at bootup.

It could be worth a shot to try a linux livecd like ubuntu and play with the mixer there. If you have this problem there too it's more evidence of a hardware problem.
