I am thinking of buying a M50sv-A1 and I am wondering if it would be worth the $100 to upgrade the harddrive to a 7200RPM SATAII 3gbs 160GB, over the standard 5400RPM 250gb SATAI drive?

Has anyone done the harddrive upgrade?

SHould I consider going with XP or should I just stick with Vista? I would have to pay extra for the XP downgrade so I'm not sure its worth it.

If you want to "upgrade" the stock 250gb 5400rpm hard drive, I wouldn't suggest the 160gb 7200rpm since their overall speed performance are similar. Go with a 320gb or 500gb 5400rpm since these drives will most likely be faster than the 200gb 7200rpm due to the higher plate density on the 5400rpm drives.

I've recently replaced my hard drive with a 320gb one, and so far there hasn't been any problems. It's actually fairly simply and straight forward.

As for Vista or XP, it totally depends on you. I chose XP because there are certain programs I use for my thesis that are not vista compatible. But for most people, Vista should be alright.
