Do I need to delete the recovery partition to install Vista 64? I tried just wiping the C drive and doing a clean install but would always end up with a "recovery.dat" error. Thanks, SIK

If I delete the recovery partition will the backup disk included restore the machine?

You do not need to delete the recovery partition in order to install any operating system. If you choose to, you can always use the restore disk revert your notebook back to it's original settings.
