I have the exact same problem with my M5N notebook, which i purchased yersterday! Not sure if I want to keep it at this point, since the fan is pretty loud and IS ON CONSTANTLYwaiting till Monday to call Asus Tech Support!
My user Manual says the following:
There are three power control methods for controlling the Notebook PC's thermal state. These power control cannon be configured by the user...
1)The fan turns ON for active cooling
2)The CPU decreases speed for passive cooling
3)The system shuts down for critical cooling
My FAN never turn OFF, I guess that mean it's always in the "active cooling", which makes no sense.
SO, does this mean we cant DO ANYTHING ABOUT our problems ? ("..cannot be configured by the user..."
I really like this laptop otherwise, but am thinking of returning it! Should I?

-
I don't see why you should, unless the fan is really loud and is bothering you...
otherwise, it's keeping the CPU cool and shouldn't be something to worry about

Vladimir,
Can you give us a bit more info, eg are you running of a/c power or d/c. Which power mode are you using, and does the fan change under different power modes? PM cpu's can actively cycle up and down in speed thus needing less active cooling, but if your set to max performance then this switching won't occur, try a max battery setting. To get an accurate messure of cpu speed download the free app cpu-z. This may help you trouble shoot your problems. So far most of the "fan stuck on" issues have only come up with the A2D, I am surprised that the M5N is giving ya hell. Most people love that model. You may also want to try updating the bios, this seems to alter temp readings in asus probe quite a bit, and thus has an impact on fan control.
If this all fails then I would take it back for a replacement/refund.
Hope it all works out

Sorry miss posted abit, there are actually a few users of the M5N who also have a similar problem, maybe worth givin those threads a read if ya haven't already. I can't remember if anyone found a solution or how common the problem was, the A2D one seems to have over taking this forum a bit of late thus I forgot about the old M5N.

I have tried all the setting possible...It is set to MAX BAttery LIFE...My Screen is DIM, No extra processes in Windows Task Manager!
The fan runs constantly regarding whether it's running on batteries or AC! It does change speed once in a while from LOUD to VERY LOUD
I wasn't sure what to look for in CPU-Z program! THe core speed was 1700mhz.Multiplier x17.0.Not sure what this means! I've seen the processor decrease the speet to 510mhz and the fan would still run.
THe fan is bothering me quite a bitAny solutions?
Also, I think my battery life is really short cuz of the FAN constantly running...I haven't timed it, since I just recieved the computer 2 days ago.
Thanks -
Ok, what cpuz is for is so you can see if your cpu is clocking down properly, that is if it was getting stuck on 1700, then it would create quite a bit of heat thus requiring fan to stay on. ASUS probe will tell you how fast the fan is going and when it turns on/off, so its often good to have these two programs running side by side to see what each different power setting does.
That aside it sounds like you have done most of things already, the only thing I can suggest is to upgrade the bios 2 see if that helps.
If the cpu is switching correctly then there isn't much you can do, appart from trying to get a replacement/refund. For me I've come from a very noisy desktop to a laptop, so I think mine is quite quiet, but maybe you were expecting something much quieter? If so then maybe an ultra light aint the best choice, as there is lot packed into a v.small space thus there isn't as much room for heat to escape, if quite is what your after then perhaps and M6N or new W3N might be a better choice, I can run my M6N on "game mode" with the fan only coming on ever now and then (approx ever 30min for around 1min) at low speed (3000rpm), which is great for me.

ps the M2N also runs pretty quiet with the fan only coming on every now and then...I guess thats what the extra 1kg does?

I think 14" is the best balance between size/portability/heat dissipation.
15 is too heavy for daily trips...
12 is too small and thus heat dissipation is poor
I'm SO going to get a W3N when it comes to North America...[]

For some reason I cannot install ASUS PROBE- during the installation I get an error that said LmProcedure Not Found and BIOS needs to be updated, when in fact i have the last version of the BIOS -0209!
This behavior is definetly abnormal (i hope) I have owned 2 12' Notebooks in the past and neither had this problem. A lot of my friends have 12' notebooks and the fan DOES NOT RUN CONSTANTLY. It turns on ONLY when it needs to. If Asus has built a computer with a constanly running FAN on purpose then they should expect a lot of returns. Noone I know is going to put up with a loud fan.
Any solutions on Asus Probe program? My friend has told me that his Asus S1N came with Asus Probe and he was able to change the settings of the fan on his machine. Also I just found from a friend of a friend who also ownes M5N that his computer DOES NOT have a FAN RUNNING CONSTANTLY...although he did purchase his machine in Europe, but i don't think that should make any difference.
Thank you all

There are different versions of ASUS probe, some of the later versions won't run on notebooks, there for the m/b, but here is a link for the M5N/notebook version.

There are also lots of newer updates including bios for the M5N here too:

I think i'll just keep this one as a backup and get a new one eventually...

I've contacted ASUS today,
here is what they told me:
Asus M5N does not have a Thermal Switch, therefore it's imposibble
for the FAN to turn off. That's it, there is nothing we can do.
I am returning mine tomorrow and getting a Dell X300, which is not as nice as Asus but at least it's quite. I've had M5N for 5 days and I am super annoyed with it. How could they build such as awesome computer and NOT PUT A THERMAL SWITCH INTO IT...
Any other suggestions for a 12' thin notebook, besides DELL?

I've heard no fan problem with S5 the version without the Optical Drive. I suppose there are all sorts of heating problem after ASUS squeeze a optical drive into the S5 design despite the absence of thermal switch, after all S5 came out before M5.
Maybe you can ask the shop you brougt it from to exchange for S5.. i don;t know if they will do it lo.

Hi,
I just got an M5N also and have the same problem with the fan noise. Very poor engineering on the fan issue and I have read about it in other places. Mine is going back as it is very annoying unless they have a fix in the works. Thanks for everyone's comments on this as they helped me decide.

If you take apart an m5, you'd actually see just as much space as there is in the S5. The S5 is probably a tad harder to work in.
Also, I know there are going to be plenty of W3's (N-855, A-915 integrated graphics, V-915 & x600) ... The V model is most likely whats coming to the states. I know they don't want to go with integrated video on anything but the 12" machines.

Thats nice... are you threatening him? That isn't going to get you anywhere with the Tiawan office. Notebooks are such a small part of their business, and the US market is the smallest notebook market they have.
The problem appears to be bios settings. All things considered, have you or anyone else tried using the latest bios for the S5? Physically all of the internal parts are the same brand and model number, from the ethernet to the usb ports. If the S5 bios is set to turn the fan on at 50c and the M5 is set at 20c, if you want to chance the notebook overheating, you may have an option.

Thanks for all the comments on the subject of M5N fan noise. I have just sent the following note to Leon Gong at ASUS support in Taiwan. His email address is: [email protected]. Mr Gong wrote to me two days ago asking that I call ASUS support for a solution rather than sending the computer back for a refund. I complied only to be told that there was no solution. You may wish to write to him also:
Dear Leon,
I am writing another message to you regarding the fan noise on the M5N. This is a serious problem that will affect your business if it is not fixed. I suggest that you go to the following website: http://www.notebookreview.com/reviews/default.asp
Search on "m5n fan noise" and review the messages. You will note that this appears to be an international issue.
There appears to be three problems: First, the constant running of the fan; second, the noticeable varying speed of the fan; and, third, the "pitch" or "whistle" sound that the fan makes. It is this sound that bothers me the most. There is a "whine" to the fan that is very annoying.
I believe that it is important for you to commit to fix these problems quickly or word will quickly spread that ASUS support is not reliable. If you can make that commitment to me I will keep the computer with the understanding that it will be fixed in the near future.
I own my own real estate business and I use many notebooks in the business. I also know that word travels fast regarding computer reliability and support. I am sure that you know all these things too so I am hoping to confirm the importance of this issue with you.
May I count on your commitment to fixing the fan noise on the ASUS M5N notebook computer?
Sincerely,
Bob -
Yes, Justin, that is how we handle it in the business world. When a product is bad we threaten to withdraw business. This product should never have come to market with this problem. And sales people who knew about it should have advised us about it before they sold it to us if they desire to avoid the threat.
Notebooks might be a small part of the ASUS business but their good name is affected by every product they put out on the market. The crossover effect is enormous in the information age.
Indeed, the problem seems to be in the bios. The sales person told me that they did not have the problem until the bios was upgraded some months ago. I spoke with ASUS support about downgrading to an older bios but they advised against it. They told me that there is more than one processor used on this unit and the Intel M that I have is not a good candidate for bios downgrade.
I have not tried the S5 bios. It sounds like this is risky business. We should not have to do such a thing. ASUS should produce something for us that is useable. I would like to hear if anyone else tries it.
If you have any good ideas I am all ears.
Bob

I removed the fan and heat sink briefly from the M5N this morning. After further investigation, I am of the belief that my main problem (and I suspect that of others) is not the fact that the fan runs all the time but that the fan itself produces a noticeable whine that is very annoying after extended use.
I had the fan in my hand running and it was still whining thereby eliminating a chassis related noise or vibration. This is a solvable engineering product defect that should not have passed quality control nor been placed on the market.
I would urge others to not stand for this deficiency and to write to Mr Leon Gong in China about this ([email protected]) and to call ASUS customer support (510-739-3777 ext. 5110) to voice their concern.

You may have a faulty fan... but emailing China isn't going to get you anywhere. Calling the US office isn't going to do much, but maybe get you a new fan (but they will tell you to call who you bought it from).... Well first of all, with the A2D heat should be expected.. It's parts that should create some serious heat.
With a centrino system it's a tad different. The heat isn't the issue here, it's an arbitrary value they are setting to remove heat. Until you can talk to the person who wrote the bios, you'll never get the full story..... It could have to do with comfort level... when you consider that the combo drive in the M5 is something that would also create heat, maybe they are using that as a reason to kick the fan on sooner so it expells the heat before your keys start to get warm.
Personally, like I said, I've been using an S5 for 15 months and an M5 for about 12 months and recently built myself a pearl m5np a few months back. I do use all of these in different situations. My white M5np is set up in my car. The black M5n is used to play dvds on airplanes when I take business trips. The original black S5, I use for meetings. Between the 3 of those, the fan is on MORE than it is with a ULV S5ne, but then again, that machine was really only good for internet and email. So, I really don't have a reason to scream and yell.... on top of that, our customers have been nothing less than pleased with all 3 different S5's and 2 different M5's we've offered in the last year.
However, I did send a shoot out to my tech guy at Asus. He said he knows the levels in the S5 and M5 are different, but aside from that he says there is nothing they can do in the US. All bios writing and testing is done via the main office in Taiwan.
As far as screaming and whining fans go.... I don't know what DB you'd consider screaming.... The smaller the fan diameter, and the more CFM the fan has to push, usually results in a louder fan.....
If anyone tells me their fan is on FULL BLAST, all the time, then I'd tell you that you have a problem, either in the unit itself, or with a setting or program you installed. The fan may turn on at 20c, but it just spins and you wouldn't hear it. At full blast, you'd hear it but it only ever does that on my systems when I start to try to render something in 3ds max or something else that I really shouldn't be doing with that little system.

Hi guys,
I have also had the misfortune to own an M5N model (an M5642NWP) since the start of June last year (I bought it because it was the only 12" notebook at the time with a DVD writer and a DVD RAM writer as well) but have been arguing with the supplying dealer, Yoyotech of Store St, London W1 and with Asus UK head office ever since.
Their constant trick is to suggest that it must just be your machine that is faulty and/or that you are imagining the excessive noise so you had better ship it back to them for a repair. But if it is your only machine as mine is (I work from home) then you don't want to ship it back as you would be left without a PC for a week. Of course if my screen or hard disk failed I would have no choice but to be without a machine for several days but to be without a machine for a few days by choice is rather a different issue.
I find Asus UK an extremely frustrating bunch of people to deal with as all the senior management personnel such as Allen Yen and Wanting Yang are temporary Taiwanese secondments and only speak English in a way that I personally find very difficult to communicate with. Also the Taiwanese management really prefer to hide away from customers and there is no directory enquiry number for Asus's UK HQ in Milton Keynes (its +44 1908 518000 by the way) and they try to force you to call their premium priced uk tech support line mainly run by a gentleman called Mike Mullen (more appropriately thought of as Mike Sullen due to his appallingly bad attitude towards customers).
They have continually denied that any other customers have ever been unhappy with fan noise on any of their notebook PCs and when I checked Google a few months back could find no evidence of other unhappy M5N customers but since then things have obviously changed rather a lot. After I found all these web posts about the fan noise problem I emailed Allen Yen (UK MD) and Wanting Yang (M5N Product Manager) again a couple of weeks ago plus also the Chairman of Asus in Taiwan (Mr Jonny Shih - [email protected]) plus Mike Sullen in Tech Support and for good measure the editors of several leading uk computer magazines.
Following this I got a call saying they wanted to come and visit me at my home address and to send their head repairs man (a guy called Riz) to test an M5N model that had been reviewed favourably as a press demonstrator directly against my machine.
Sure enough last Tuesday (Feb 8th) Riz visited me here and compared my machine and then the press demonstrator M5N machine for fan noise. He conceded and agreed with me that my macine's fan was hugely noisy but when we turned it off and listened to the press demonstrator M5N model amazingly it was almost totally silent.
Riz then spent 2 or 3 hours at my home replacing the existing fan with another fan (no joy as same noise occurred) and putting my fan in the press demo model, whereupon my fan then became mysteriously silent. He also tried installing a new motherboard in my machine but the relentlessly droning fan noise persisted.
At this point Riz asked if he could take my machine away with him as he felt that my fan noise was down to an obstructed air flow path in the mouldings of the fan casing. So I was forced to let happen what I didn't want to happen - namely being without my machine for 2 to 3 days and also having had to backup and/or remove all sensitive data.
I then got a call from Riz on Wednesday afternoon to say he couldn't fix the problem that day but it should be fixed by Thursday.... Eventually I received my machine back by courier late on Friday afternoon - after 3 days with no PC.
Riz had fitted new external casing all round and also a brand new TFT screen since one of my other major beefs with this machine was that the screen came with a dead pixel and that when the dealer swapped it out on Day 2 the next machine - the one I have now (new and in sealed box) also had a dead pixel in the screen.
But after I started up the machine and left it on for a half hour or so the same problem - a droaning and absolutely maddening fan noise. Although Asus Probe showed the fan was now only running at 1300rpm, rather than the previous 1400 to 1600 rpm or even up to 2200rpm, the unbearable fan noise issue persiste. And there are also no settings in Asus Probe to control the fan speed and that is with Asus's very latest BIOS now installed.
Before this machine I had a Samsung X10 that was actually totally silent apart from the fan running with a pleasant and non irritating shushing for may be 2 minutes out of 45. Samsung did release a BIOS upgrade that would have left the fan on all the time but I took heed of the warnings in the release notes and did not update to it. But the silver casing of the Samsung unit wore right through to two unsightly blocks of large dark grey plastic on both corners so that machine went back for a full refund under the BAA Worldcard 12 months money back guarantee.
Before the Samsung I had a Fujitsu Siemens P2020 for around a year that was a 3.5 pound Transmeta Crusoe 600mhz processor machine that was totally silent but whose characters completely wore off 70% of the cuticle thin keyboard keys after only 11 months. As there was no solution Fujitsu took that machine back and refunded me. But this fan noise business is the most irritating fault I have come across so far, although it does seem that the failure to properly test products for unacceptable user faults is the stock in trade of the notebook PC marketplace. Ironically my mother has a 26 month old Samsung P10 and that appears to be a well made machine. No dead pixels, a casing that doesn't seem to mark or scratch and fan noise that is just a pleasant shush and not this terrible whirring drone.
I am only slightfully hopeful that I may be able to get rid of this machine and get my money back since although the machine was faulty on Day 1 Yoyotech does not seem to even begin to understand the concept of a customer refund and Asus constantly passes the buck on the question of a refund back to my supplying dealer. This despite the fact that Fujitsu previously refunded me directly and bypassed the dealer when I proved that their notebook was not fit for the purpose.
Does anyone have any suggestions on a well made smallish notebook that has no fan noise. The only one I am aware of is the Panasonic Toughbook series although there seems to be a hefty price premium to pay. -
Such a shame.. I've been really interested in buying an M5Np lately... but with all this talk about fan problems/noise, I've been dicouraged. Darn, I really like the specs of the M5 too... The S5 is too expensive and doesn't have that built-in combo drive [

Asus are one crazy company but it unfortunately seems to be the Taiwanese mentality towards doing business. Like "ah so Mr customer we have your money now and no way does you ever get no refund from us".
They blame the selling dealer in London, only a smallish firm, when it is not really his fault as he only can't afford the refund because Asus won't credit him for the returned stock. How is it Fujitsu could refund me direct on a machine bought from a dealer and Asus can't.
The only difference seems to be that Fujitsu is aware of the dangers of unhappy customers forced to keep machines they now hate and Asus is not. Asus seems to think all publicity is good publicity but in my opinion those who believe that have never been right as the examples of Ratners and Hotpoint demonstrate only too clearly.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

Not responsive to their clients needs. You can certainly say that again. "In denial of their clients needs and their clients problems would be more like it".
Everything about Asus in the UK is rubbish. The M5N series is such a strange phantom model here that nobody even lists it in their memory upgrade guides. Yet the machine does have a slot with 256MB in it that can take a 1GB memory module instead.
But what suggestions do you have as to how I should resolve my issue with them?
Schedule a time for a press conference at the doors of their Milton Keynes HQ to test which is more noisy? An M5N or a pneumatic drill? Or ask for a Most Wanted investigation into the whereabouts of Mr Allen Yen, the so called MD of Asus UK who never reads customer email even though the Chairman of Asus Global in Taiwan, Mr Jonny Shih, does give his customers this respect.
Yours in total frustration.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

Well one thing you could do is get in contact with the guys over at www.tomshardwareguide.com .... they are always compairing the Asus MB's to everything in the world...they have also started on NB's so maybe they would be int. with showning them up and show that they are actualy impartial...

And there was I stupidly thinking that Tom's Hardware Guide must be a wholly owned subsidiary of Asus Global![]

I'm curious as to whether these M5Ns with fan problems... are they the regular M5N? or the M5Np?
(If they are the same thing, please forgive my stupidity)

The only difference between the M5n and np are the keyboards. The Np has a much improved keyboard.... everything else is the same.
Thanks,

well.. it's about 1/2 wider.... i can take a picture of both side by side if you'd like.
The NP keyboard has full size number keys and a longer space bar and a bigger backspace button...... the few things some customers said kept this from being perfect.
The N keyboard has 3/4 size number keys, a short space bar and a smaller backspace button.
Thanks,
Justin

OK, I'm not quite sure why you replied to my message, when I was replying to someone else.
But Asus UK certainly has nothing to do with us..... Infact, as far as the M5 model goes, Asus US doesn't even have anything to do with us......... In the US the M5 is sold as a barebone unit...... The M5 is part of the M5000 series....... the "2" as in M5200N stands for US or "english".....
The UK keyboard sucks even more than the US keyboard. We've sold probably around 800 M5's in the last 14 months and there hasn't been a single complaint on our side. The only reviewer that had anything bad to say about it, said the space bar and backspace were too small.. but expected in that small of a system....... so basically the NP keyboard took care of that.
If you ordered something and got the wrong thing....... is it just me, or instead of complaining about the company, maybe you should call them up or bring it back? Something is behind your problem and if you ordered a certain system and didn't get it that would be the first logical step. If you ordered one thing, and then the box maybe said another... I would think, if many models are available in the UK, Asus might just use one box.... just makes sense to me.
I really don't know where your problems stem from, but I hope my comments help.
Thanks,
Justin
