I've seen the M5N (aka M5200N) on www.asus.com and it sure looks interesting. It's a Two-spindle system weighing 1.55kg, which means that the DVD Writer fits inside the case.

Does anyone know what brand/model and how fast (2x, 4x or 8x) their slimline DVD Writer is?

    Thanks

    Pierre

if you poke around the asus website you should find the specs as i did:

    9.5mm 5.25" 24X/24X/16X/24X DVD+CD-RW combo drive
    9.5mm 5.25" 2X/24X/10X/8X/24X DVD-RW drive (March, 2004)

also search on pricewatch for this and you can find lots of stores with specs.

the knock on the asus seems to be terrible battery life. they are not allowing the 48W battery to be sold in the US and the 3 cell 24w battery does less than 2 hours in the real world (and less than that with dvd use, etc.). the 72W battery adds weight and hangs off the back.

good luck! i am personally waiting for the new fujitsu s7010 to be announced in about 2 weeks.

Take a look at http://www.jncs.com/index-google.asp?page=../content/m3n.htm for the Asus M5N.

I'm concerned about the durability of these really cool looking systems, both the S5200n and the M5200n. What are the differences and are they fragile because they're so thin? Thanks,

Just for those interested found a few benchmark scores for the M5200 at tom's hardware.
    http://www6.tomshardware.com/mobile/20040324/mayhem-04.html]
They used it as the comparison notebook for the DTR ABS mayhem. Not quite sure why they did, as the M5N is a thin and light not a big heavy DTR. The results were obvious before they started and thus pointless. But it does give you an indication of the gaming ability of this machine, which is limited but possible.
