When the fan kicks it into high gear, a moment later, the laptop shut off. What is causing this? Overheating? Bad power supply?

I've open it up and cleaned things out a bit. There isn't any dust blocking air intakes/exhausts.

    Thanks

Symptoms are very suggestive of the CPU overheating; If you've actually opened the notebook and cleaned the radiator with compressed air (rather than just simply looked from the outside), and it's clean now with continued symptoms then you're more likely to have a break in the thermal pad/seal between the heatsink and the cpu, or a crack in the heatsink itself. If the latter, it's a pretty major repair. If you haven't removed the fan and cleaned the inside of the radiator, you should do so ( see here for what it can look like even with regular external maintenance).

Is this an Asus model? It must be an old one if so, I don't recognize the model number.

No it's not, I brain farted. I own a c90s and 1000H, so I have ASUS on the brain. The M6805 is an emachine. I'll repost in that forum.

What you say makes sense. The reason I guessed power supply is that the battery isn't charging properly either. This laptop is almost 5 years old. It was doing great then everything seems to be failing at once. Besides the shutting down problem, the track pad and wireless stopped working. Might be related to the sudden shutdowns.

Yeah, hardware on the mainboard can be affected by overheating.

I reiterate ClearSkies' suggestions, they are good. Make sure it's really clean, and if it is, remove the heatsink, clean the old thermal paste, and reapply new one. If that doesn't do it either, maybe it's bad heatsink, or maybe something else on the mainboard is giving up on you...
