Hello...
I've got an Asus M6NW80 - 1.7 Mhz, 80gb hdd, 512Mb ram, 15.4"
After the a couple days running it started having problems with the hdd access being slow at times (I mean real slow) and it then turned into severe problems with accessing the hard disk and it reached one point where I couldnt start up at all because windows would crash with an hard disk problem right after bootup and keep restarting. It went back to the store and went asus for repair. They have placed a new disk.
Still, I've been getting problems like I did in the 1st week. The disk sometimes runs slow, excell worksheets tend to drag a bit every now and then. Every once in a while I've been getting a inconsistency disk problem right after bootup. I tend to believe it might not really be a hard disk problem but some problem with the controlers or something wich might end in a hdd damaged?
Anyone else having this kind of problems? Any ideas at all?
Btw... I run Norton Antivirus 2005 fully updated (no viruses so far) so I dont really believe it would have to do with viruses and/or trojans.
Thanx for any replyes.

Btw... also heard of another asus notebook case where the hdd has been replaced twice already... (not sure if it was an M6N)
This kinda spooks me! -

What speed and make of hard drive are you using?
Also, Norton is a RAM hog and it'll always make things run slower... We'd never suggest running it, even if you had twice the RAM you do.
Thanks,
Justin

Well its not really my laptop (notebook) its my girlfriend's. Anyways I cant be with her until next Wed, so I'll check the hard disk make by then.
Anyways, its the standard disk that came from asus, no changes, well they replaced it once already, but it was asus who did it. Last time I checked the make it only showed some weird number, but I believe asus is using Matsuy or Hitashi or something like that? Can't be fully sure untill next wed.
As for speed its either 4200 or 5400 (not sure)... But that is not what bugs me. What bugs me is the disk inconsistency warning, and that the 1st time the disk really got trashed (they replaced it). Also, even on a 4200rpm disk, you would not need an entire day to format 80Gb (a full format was performed on the 1st disk to see if it would fix it) but in this case it took near a full day!
Thanks for your interest in the problem.
Any feedback is most welcome and apreciated.
Cya round peeps.
(Yep you are right about norton, but still its the antivirus I'd trust the most atm, a matter of personal opinion I'd guess, my point was though, none of the problems seem to be coming from viruses) -
Personally, antivirus programs such as AVG and Avast are great and just as good as Norton (if not better).
I used to trust Norton with my life... until my programs became snail slow. Even the more updated Norton antiviruses take up too much RAM for my liking...

I would look to see if DMA mode is enabled on the HDD disk. I doubt that norton or anyother program could slow you notebook down that much if DMA is enabled or if there wasn't some more serious error somewhere else, I had a similar problem about a month ago where computer was super slow, and had trouble booting, bsod etc. The disk had swiched to PIO mode and refused to go back to DMA, this appears to be a bug in Windows that occurs occassionally with both CD drives and Hdd. A complete low level format fixed the corruption on the hdd and re-enabled DMA, computer is now super stable !
You may also wanna check if there are any system errors (right click my computer > manage> event viewer > system error).
Hope you get it worked out

ps may also wanna download the hdd utility checking tool from the website of the hdd manurfacture.
