    M70vm-X1 RAM - Is 8GB an option

    When I bought my M70vm-X1 a few months ago, I thought I noticed that the motherboard could handle 2 4GB ram sticks for 8GB total ram (I'm running Windows Server 2008 as Workstation so don't bother pointing out I can't use the memory - I'm virtualizing a ton of stuff).

    I can't seem to find the documentation that indicates whether this is possible or not.

    The 4GB setup is 2 2GB DDR2 800 PC2-6400 sticks.

    I'm trying to determine if my system will work with DDR3 memory or just DDR2 memory.

    Also, will 2 4GB sticks work?

    I'll be researching this all morning and will post updates as I find them for further reading. Any assistance is welcome!

    From my understanding, the motherboard on the M50/M70 line supports a total of 4GB, meaning ASUS already maxed out the units' capabilities at the factory.

    And no, DDR3 memory isn't compatible with the system.

    DDR3 no. you motherboard is one with DDR2 there diffrent slot's I believe

    8GB possible I don't know.

    I think DDR2 4gbx2=8 is possible
    I do not know whether OS can utilize all this memory

    I know Windows Server 2008 Enterprise can handle up to 2TB (yes, TB) of memory (obviously I won't hit this limit anytime soon...). This is because it is designed to scale up for server farms.

    Does anyone have any links to support claims (since we have contradictory claims of 4/8 GB support)?

    Consensus is DDR3 won't fly. Any links to confirm?

    Oy... I'll never understand why DDR3 support is such a big deal to some of y'all. It's not like DDR2 provided a significant speed increase over DDR... just more bandwidth that hardly gets utilized. The only real gain was the modules' lower voltage requirements.

    As for proof of incompatibility, the DDR3 modules have a different pin configuration and are keyed differently in comparision to DDR2.

    All PM45 chipsets can support 8GB of DDR3 and DDR2 memory, but it is up to the manufacturer to enable that support. All current manufacturers only enable either DDR3 or DDR2, not both. Most allow 8GB but some restrict the amount in the BIOS. Spacecookie confirmed that his system does support 8GB, hopefully more people can further confirm via screenshot, etc.

    How did you manage this? I have the same system, have already upgraded the HDD to 1 TB(2x500GB) 7200 RPM Seagates, but I thought 4GB was max for the RAM. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I would love to have 8GB of usuable RAM.

    YES IT IS! I took a chance and ordered a 4GB stick for my M70Vm and it recognized it! I have another 4GB stick on the way so I will soon have 8GB. Man the upgrade from 4GB to 6GB was pretty nice, things run a lot smoother, can't wait to see 8GB! I guess Asus said it was limited to 4GB max due to the 32 bit software they installed. Way to go Asus!

    The G50vt series (same timeframe) was the same way. I think they only advertised 4GB because 8GB kits weren't available enough yet.
