    Hi all,
I'm trying to find some reliable info on the max operating temp at full load on a GTX260m.

I know there is no temp sensors for the video ram, so some overclocking is hazardus at best.

I know I can overclock my GPU some, but I'm trying to test a combined overclocking w/ 100% cpu usage to watch the temps to see if I feel i'm in too much danger.

I'm using Furmark to get my numbers, with 100% cpu (OC'd to 2.4 GHz), xtreme stress test GPU I get 101c with the arc not flatlining (OC'd 600/900/1500) at which point I hit escape because the temps scare me. At OC'd 550/880/1375 I sit lower, but still not as low as I'd like (more flat / peak arc in the 99-102 range).

Now, I know the chances of running a game that takes max cpu and max stress test of my GPU are highly unlikely, but as I'm sure everyone can imagine, I want to be safe, but I'd like a bit more then stock.

I have no artifacts at any settings, but, as I mentioned, I don't want to push too high because I have no way of knowing the video RAM temps, and I read somewhere on this forum about not wanting to exceed 106c, but even that felt high... So any tips, or references that one can point me to with regard to max temps on the GPU I would most appreciate it!

Ok, I should say OC'd from factory default :p

The other question is - should I even be doing the xtreme test anyway or am I really just pushing the mobile GPU too hard and instead should I just use the regular stability test?

anyways, try running 3d mark 06. If you get above 90c on 3dmark 06 with factory default oc, you should not use those speed. I oc to 550/950/1375, 3d mark 06 result in 88C while furmark went up to 98C at 300sec mark.

I suggest you pick up a cooler for this laptop, I'm in the process of doing so (and getting coppers too!). That way you can at least safely clock the card to the stock settings without worrying it going over 100C

That's normal for all G51s, but its not a safe temperature as mentioned in a lot of threads.

Since I don't have a cooler right now, I put 2 folded magazine on each side of notebook. The laptop sits on top of those magazines in order to allow air flow on the bottom. This poor man's passive cooling enable me to decrease my temperature by 2 degree.

Im not completely sure here... i mean, given that furmark is really a stressful test, my max atm is 85C (stability/8xAA/1366x768/Extreme burn). And while i though no games would take it there, i recently seen COD:MW2 take it to 85C, i guess it depends on the cycles and thresholds, around 85C my second fan speed starts and takes it down to 77C in both furmark n COD, probably if the cooling wasn't enough and reach the 90s i would kick the 3rd speed fan and things might be different but atm both furmark and COD have the same behavior. I also seen some people go to high 90s with crysis, so i guess it depends on the game as well.

Game shouldn't have anything to do with it. No matter what game I play, the fan kicks in at 86C and again at 94C.

Well maybe i didnt explain it correctly, what i meant by games was toward not all games will stress it the same, for example the highest i seen in wow is 77C never touchs the 2nd fan speed, while COD takes it 85C where it does takes it as far as Furmark. Just trying to make a point into a game taking it as high as Furmark can under my conditions.

That "circle plastic" is physically molded to the backpanel. You need to actually cut it out if you want to give direct airflow to your fan.

will it decrease the heat if i remove it? if so by how many degrees?

Yes, it will "decrease" heat if you cut it out. It should shave ~5*C off your GPU load temp.

Then why was it there in the first place? If it could shave off 5C, shouldn't asus take it off?

Ask Asus. I'm not the one that designed the notebook. But I can eliminate the possible factors as to why they did block off the fan. The RAM, MOSFET's, capacitors, inductors, etc, all do not need active cooling from the fan. The HDD's do not need cooling, nor do they get any anyway since they are in a different compartment of the notebook chassis isolated away from the fan. I can go on and on. Asus slacked off. It's as simple as that. I've already ranted for months about this in this forum already and I am getting tired of seeing notebook manufacturers compromise so much that it leaves the notebook with nothing more than the bare minimum. So I won't repeat the already existing truth that I have engraved into the very bits of the Asus forum already. This makes the slogan of "you get what you pay for" true as one is really paying for a sloppily engineered notebook. But why do users complain? Because we always want more. We as a modern materialistic society always want more for our money. So we take it upon ourselves following the knowledgeable to pick up where the manufacturer has left off.

Unless you have fingers of steel, then yes you can peel it off. You have to take actual power tools to it to cut open the "hole." Yes, it will void the warranty. But if you can find a spare backpanel as a backup, it won't "void" it.

So far, both Dragon Age and COD4/6 will bring the GPU to 87C, the fans come on, and it stays at 81C while playing. This is while running @ T9900-3.5ghz, GPU @ 600/1000/1600.... no mods inside on an NC2000.

ASUS put that thing on for a purpose....You cant just rip it off..... Dust is he number 1 enemy of electronic products..... I think that mesh blocks off most of the dust going in the laptop.

that mesh isn't a mesh. its just metal. its not blocking any dust, its blocking air. there is no airflow without removing it.

Mine hits 100C pretty regularly on new games. I'm under warranty. Oh well. I have a cooler and everything. Maybe its dust?

yea i got crysis and some other games off these steam deals and at least in crysis my gpu hits about 101 and then stays at around 90. Does make me a little nervous, probably going to buy a desktop next paycheck to do most of my home gaming on and just use the laptop when i'm away.
But just curious I know these gpu temps aren't good but are they really that damaging? Should I not play crysis for 6 hours straight with those temps or should i just chalk the heat up to the way the system was built and put faith that it will hold together for atleast 2 years?

I have a G71GX BB and my max GPU temp in games gets up to 83C without a cooler.
I have my doubts that my card could be factory undervolted since I can barely overclock to 560/900/1400. Anything higher gives me DirectDraw error in 3DMark 06.
Another thing is that when I try to undervolt it in DOS, I always get a General Protection fault message when attempting to use nvflash.

Hi I'm running mine at 620/950/1620. I play crysis warhead for like an hour with max temperature of 77-78C. AT default while gaming I got max temp of 77C. I also run the ATITOOL artifact scan for 4 hours without error. Is that consider a good temperature and a stable clock? Thank you!!

hmm interesting, makes me want to try OC'ing for whatever reasons lol.. but I don't think I need to. Most intensive games i play are DA:O, Crysis, and Stalker 2009 mod.. but since I'm not an AA guy so my FPS are pretty good.

My max temps playing any of these games for an hour has been 75C

Hey so I have had my g71 for a while now. (love it beyond belief) and just installed bioshock 2. pretty nice graphics. started playing and on the main menu it reached about 90 C then played and it hit 103 C and slowed down. so i started wondering about max temps cuz that seemed REALLY high. needless to say I ended up getting a can of compressed air and blowing that baby in there. Now my idles are 65 C GPU and like 46 C cpu. and while playing bioshock2 my gpu never broke like 85 C. So to wrap it up... yes it is probably dust i had the same problem. get some compressed air then try again. oh and use the air with your comp off :)
