Like the title says:
What are the maximum (STABLE !) clocks of the 8600M GT GDDR3 in the G1S??![]()
I overclocked with nvidia ntune:
- 600 MHz GPU core
- 720 GPU memory
What do you guys think, is it possible to go higher (without any risks !)
My current driver is the 169.21 from laptopvideo2go...
-
This is very different on every laptop because the original clock rates are those considered as safe for every video card and as the video cards have different manufacturing quality every card will allow other clock rates. Some might even not be overclockable at all.
600MHz GPU is quite close to the limit I think. The highest GPU clock achived is 625MHz afaik.
I don't know whether 720Mhz memory are already the maximum.
You can try ATITool to find out the max clock rates, it can do this automatically. But I would not go any higher if I had your G1S. -
increase the clocks by 5mhz until artifacting starts to occur
-
And - if artifacting occurs - go back by 10-20Mhz because the video card is faster when it doesn't operate too close to the limit but some Mhz below.

I don't understand why people overlclock their laptops. You put so much work in considering the laptop, there really shouldn't be a need to push more out of it. In addition to this, the TERRIBLE airflow present (or is there airflow? lol) restricts so much of this. I would not risk my little lappy for a few more FPS That a minimal overclock gets you...not worth it. Go buy a desktop and oc the !@#$ out of it and have fun.
I would not reccomend you touch the clock speeds. -
hmm i overclocked mine to 620/700 with RivaTunner, it seems stable and doesnt have BSOD or anything graphic split in the graphics
-
I overclocked mine to 575/760 and its fine, no BSoD or anything.
-
I run 575/775 all day without a problem
-
Ideally, my f8 would have had a nvidia 8600gt ddr3, but it didnt, so i clock my card to achieve a ddr3 cards speed. Like wise, say you had a card that was a 7800gt, and you find out that not only can a a 7700gt clock to your speeds, it can also clock to out perform it, wouldnt you think "Hmm, i couldve saved some money if i went with the 7700gt", and if you dont think that, you should think "if a 7700gt can perform like my 7800gt, then maybe my card can perform like a 7900gt!"
In my case, an overclock takes me up to an extra 15fps ingame, i think its highly worth it -
But you also have to remember that overclocking boosts the temps and shortens the life of every affected piece of hardware. That's another big trade-off...

Spitting out useless garbage of a post like this makes no sense. Notebooks are capable of overclocking(GPU wise), not as much as a desktop but there are thermal barriers and things you can do to improve the stock cooling despite the airflow. Keep in mind that mobile GPUs run relatively cooler so there is some headroom to improve overall airflow much like how people overclock desktops(albeit much easier). -
I try to keep the original ratios between the core and mem. clocks; I think it's something like core x 1.47 (it's a quick calculation.
Ordinarily, I'm running somewhere along 530/780, but the temps exceed 100 degrees at times, and 3dmark06 is all over the place. One day it's 4500, the next day it's 3500. No idea why!
169.09 -
Your OC isn't stable that all.
Personnaly i overclock mine with ntune 580/780 and i've got 4615 in 3Dmark06.
It keep oscillating , but only beetween 4500 and 4600 points... -
That being said, I think the unexperienced user should not overclock, and the experienced user should overclock only if there is a real-life performance gain to it. (that is, not to get 200 more points in 3D Mark) Otherwise there are possible negative side-effects (temps, instability) without real-life benefits -- and that's always a bad thing to have. -
-
4600 is very possible with the g1s. With the perfect clocks I get 4500 easy, 4600 every so often. I was at 4500 for the last few days with the 169.09 drivers!
Freerider,
What drivers you using??? -
Now the 169.25 is already out lolbut i will stay with the 169.21 now
So what exactly are your clock settings? -
Got it with 169.12 on an asus G1S (DDR3) , clock setting:580/780 with ntune that all. I've just OC the GPU .
By freerider_7 at 2007-12-14
Today's new one with 169.21, same clock:
-
is it STABLE ? (I'm gone try the exact the same clocks now) -
Stable and approved ^^
The temperature don't go up to 75°C in mine, on games like crysis or others... -
BUT your temperature never goes up to 75°C????
Mine goes up to 98 !
120°C is like that safety limit
Where are you playing? (room temperature) or what did you do to reduce the temp.??
I was playing in a room where it is 21°C and now I'm going to move to a room where it is maybe 15°C -
It's better for components life. -
In a week it's my birthday and i asked my sister to buy that zalman notebook cooler
Those are really nice temperatures with the zalman cooler
EDIT: My current clock settings are 550/777 (just to decrease the temp. a bit) and cod 4 runs GREAT (i mostly get 70fps outside in action)
-
Hello all
I live in Africa . I have a asus G2S and the temperature here is 30°C all the time . Do you think it is a good resolution to OC ??? I am playing crysis and i want to increase the performance because it lag a little .
To you think if i oc like sgtmatt1 : 550/777 it will not have any problem ??
The 8600Mgt of asus G2S have no fan so i don't know if it is a good solution to Oc .
Thanks for your help.
Sorry for my english because i am french -
Yea you can OC a little your card , but you need a notebook cooler to secure the temperature under 100°C , and you've check it often, but simply for games who're demanding.
P.S:Je suis français aussi,je t'ais envoyé un message perso.
-
My temperatures can go up to 96°C (in a room where it's 21°C)
I will use a notebook cooler to reduce the temp(better for the life of your laptop)

hey guys, sorry to post a newb question here but I regarding overclocking, on average, how much performance increase can I expect with overclocking. For eg. does overclocking an extra 10% give you 5% increase in fps? (just an example and I know thats probably wrong, but giving you an idea of how to put it)
-
there are factors since there are two clocks that you change and you cant change them to the exact same settings since they are, once again, two different clocks. AND, its usually game specific
the best thing is to try to find the limit of what your card can do, and work down, so that way you can find a clock that manages your temp well and gives you the maximum performance
once again, i clock my card, (under your preference), around 150%, and i get a near 10 fps gain in games like crysis -
Thanks for your response. So for an ambient temperature of 30°C what are the cloks you advice me to set whith rivaturner to Oc ?? Actuallly i play Crysis and COD4.
Do you think if i oc to 525/700 is good ??? I don't understand why Asus dont place a fan whith the 8600MGT lol .
I will pay a zalman cooler to reduce my temp. I have read some tests and the results are good whith this zalman .
PS: Freerider je t'ai repondu. Ca fait plaisir de voir un francais . -
You can overclock the frequency at max 110% of their initial valor, within risk.
But you can push it at 560/760 , with your ambient T°C , with the zalman within risk..
The main thing to remenber , is to check constantly the T°C of your GPU with software like everest for exemple...
And also just overclock it when it's really needed: Crysis is needing that , but i think you can play good COD4 within OC.(i didn't test it , so i don't really know...but i know some guys who play within.)
If you want to overclock both GPU and CPU try to use RivaTurner , you can push your GPU at max 580/780 with stability , and for the CPU i don't know , but it seems you can go threw 2.3GHz easily.Look a gogole research for that. -
I will try to apply : 525/700 to see what happen .
After when i will receive the zalman i will increase the OC.
Are you sure we can Oc the CPU with rivaturner ? -
Does anybody has experience with the zalman notebook cooler and the Asus G1S??
Because i have read that the zalman cooler only reduces the temperatures of the G1S with 2-3°C...
And i wanted to get the cooler this afternoon -
Hello
I don't think that the Zalman has no effect with the G1S because freerider says that it reduce the temp of his Asus G1S .
You can try it and tell us what do you think by relasing different test .
I have commanded the Zalman so i am waiting it too . I have just overcloked my 8600MGT at : 525/720 . It is not much because i wait the zalman. But whith this frequency i have 84°C playing Cryis whith all at medium .
I will increase to 535/730 but after i will wait my Zalman to increase much.
What do you think ? -
I just ordered the zalman notebook cooler in my local computer store.
The Asus G1S is black so i don't want the silver cooler, but the black one
But i have to wait longer because the black one is not in stock... I have to wait a week -
-
I receive the Zalman cooler for my G2S 17" but i don't see any difference .
I oc at 570/780 but i am still at 85°C when i am playing crysis .
Somehone can help me ? -
DallasMavericksRule Notebook Enthusiast
I have mine on 515/725, and so far everything works great. As of now, I dont see a reason to clock it any higher... My fans do run at 66 idle and about 90-95 during intense gameplay, is this normal?
-
when i try to overclock my laptop it doesnt save it to my computer...whats with that ?
-
As it seems I'm running on the highest GPU O/C with it being at 648/848 all the time except when GPU is idle (RivaTuner has a cool option that it downclocks when GPU isn't needed and O/C's only when GPU starts working).
Anyways this is the highest score I've reached so far in 3dmark06:
To be honest 4802 doesn't seem quite in order for the O/C I performed, it should have been atleast in my opinion 5000+, I just can't figure out how come I'm loosing points like I currently am.
I am using the Zalman notebook cooler, beforehand I used to have idle temps of 82c and now I have an idle temp of 64c after O/C.
The max temp I used to experience before the cooler was 102c and you can see in the image the max temp during the 3dmark06 test.
As you can see I have experienced a drop of 20c, if thats not enough then I have no idea what you guys are aiming for
The latest O/C I attempted to make was 700/900 but during the 3dmark06 my display driver simply crashes and I have alot of artifacts until I shutdown my computer so it looks like I'm cruising along the maximum O/C borderline at the moment.
For those who would like info regarding my stats:
Asus G1S-A1
Display driver: 169.28 (laptopvideo2go.com)
Zalman Notebook Cooler NC1000
Idle temps: 64-65
Max temp: 94c (while on LCD screen playing Pro evolution soccer)
O/C using RivaTuner 2.06 -
Hey im going to refer to this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=146088
So far the best OC is 600 / 848 STABLE and was done by "adolfotregosa" with Ntune 600/848 - astonishing 5278 points. Driver 165.01
I see jclark OC more, however this achieved a better 3d mark result and should win. It was also done a long time back when we were using almost factory drivers. Today the score should be even higher. He also tested it in winXP which at the time gave him 5403 points! XP test Driver 158.51 with RivaTuner
Personally i run 580/780 but havent tested the score on it. I did 3dmark one time with 653/700 and i achieved 4500 points. Again old drivers and not optimal combo. 580/780 is a VERY good combo that i personall recomend. Use ATItool set it to 580/780 and save it as a profile, use that one when you game and the default 475/700 when you dont need it.
Did i mention i got a normal work load with 580/780 at under 70c?Il run 3dmark on it again today to update. Please continue this discussion on the thread i mentioned above. Il gather all the results on the OC part to make it easier!
-
Hello
Jclarck you have OC to much lol . I use a zalman but i don't see difference because in idle i am at 61°C . When i play crysis i have a max of 90°C whith OC.
My OC is : 570/780. I know i can increase but i dont really need it for the moment .
I have a asus G2S 17" . I don't know if the zalman is adapted for a 17" ? -
). I also removed the plastic that covers the air ventilation (where its supposed to suck in fresh air). This has in total made my fan a LOT more efficient, 10 c lower when its OC!! Also i can barely ever hear the fan spin because it cools so much better.
This may look a bit rough, but as its just added ventilation above the suction of the cooling fan it should not void any warranty and it helps A LOT!
-
Ok you open all the protection of your fan to have more reduce the temperature ?
-
If i spill coffee on my laptop the guarantee wont cover it. If it gets dusty, open it up and blow it out! I only increased the amount of fresh air to enter into the fan, giving my screen card a longer life time and the fan less stress. I can barely hear my fan "swiiish" and it never hits over 65 c when im surfing the net etc, using ATItool for the OC and the temp meassurement, which i believe is innacurate and shows to high temps
And for the people who has done their homework, they know that the G2S runs the same card with a higher clock mainly because it has better cooling (more space around it). Asus did not design the G1S good enough, they have not given it sufficient cooling. Im trying to fix this with very simple tools doing minimum modifications. -
ive run 3dmark06 and i got 4 600 points with 580/780
T7500
3Gb Ram
8600 GT DDR3 -
-
Same score for me at same clock.
Good to play CRYSIS with better FPS, but not needed for all days. -
Are you are talking about the G1S right??
I got exact the same clock speeds and i don't think i can get such a high score (using 169.28)
(I will run 3DMARK06 right NOW) -
Settings:
Using ForceWare 169.28
(btw. Why the hell is my memory 2032 and not 2048 MB?)
Score:
Max. Asus G1S Overclock (GPU)
