Anybody know of any news regarding Asus' change in warranty policy that was supposed to happen on May 1?

I emailed the stores about the warranty the other day, and so far Proportable and Agear confirmed that they will have the 3rd year warranty starting today. I think Agear said the 3rd year was a Asus third year North America warranty though, not glogal (which doesnt matter to me).

Thats right, the extra year is only a North American warranty, and technically it starts today.

Clearify North American...so a Canadian W3V owner can have it serviced ANYWHERE through ASUS in the United States or Canada for one more full year after the 1st 2 years of the global warranty is up?
OR a US W3V owner on vacation in Toronto for example is covered here (or anywhere else in North america) for 3 years and also globally for the 1st 2 years?
I guess I could have worded that easier/differently, but oh well!

This isn't going to be some permanent thing..... they are going to try this program out for 3 months and see how it goes. The North American office is offering it. Canada doesn't have an office and nor does Mexico..... all of NA is serviced from the Fremont, CA office. Although it is my understanding that Supercom in Canada has been set up by Asus as a service depot for Canada so your notebooks don't need to cross borders over and over.
All I can do is read word for word from thing.... so I'm going to have to assume it's good for the Canadian buyers as well, as it's worded the way it is. Basically, this warranty is NOT good when you are traveling in Asia and Europe during that third year... thats about it..... but you're covered globally for the first two years still.
You can't have your Asus stuff serviced anywhere. It has to go back to Asus or their depot in Canada.
Asus says this starts today....... but they aren't going to get the info up on their site till at least tomorrow as they don't work on the weekend.
Thanks,
Justin

So let me understand this...
The new 3yr warranty will be standard and replace the 2yr?
If thats the case, wow... now I'm definately getting an Asus! -
PROPortable Company Representative
Well, it's an added year for this 3 month promotional period..... it's only going to be through select dealers..... for Asus that could be 3-4 or 10-20..... I have no idea what they are doing about this anymore. They wanted to set up a "preferred" list..... which you'd think was a "select few"...... but all that matters to me is that we're going to be on that list whenever they do post it.
But that extra year is just for use within North America...... it's not going to be covered globally, as I said above.
But the standard warranty is still a 2 year global..... you just get this extra 1 year (total of 3) for this promo period from select dealers................ but when you look at it, yeah, buy an Asus notebook this summer and get a 3 year warranty, basically.
Thanks,
Justin

yeah, I'm with the last poster. Justin, could you clarify this for me (sorry if I've missed another post elsewhere)? Does this mean that if I buy a new notebook (only ensemble, I presume) today in NA, that I automatically get 3 years warranty?
That's incredible, especially compared to what I got with my last Toshiba (tho it didn't break until the 4th year). kudos to Asus. -

It's an automatic thing as far as I know.... I mean you're going to have to register it and send in a copy of your reciept to get it, but yes. Asus hasn't formally posted their list, so for right now I can only speak for ourselves.

Justin

Wow, did I read wrong? The North American Asus office is located in the humble city of Fremont?
Most of the online stores that I have looked at (proportable, rjtech, geared2play, istnc, etc) are located miles and miles away, but since I do happen to live in Fremont, would I be able to see any Asus laptops in person? I know an having an office does not imply a store, but I would much rather walk into a store because I'm still not really into online shopping especially for something as expensive as a laptop (yeah I know I'm old). -
I won't be purchasing my w3v 'til around August.. I wish the deal is still around until then.

Thats correct, that's were you're going to be sending the system if you have a problem with it.
Asus doesn't have any sort of display area at that location that you can go and just check them out, and I'm not sure of a store around there that might have some that you can walk/drive to. But if there is and you don't mind paying tax... whats out there.... I think central computer maybe?

Justin

If you have an unconfigured ensemble machine bought on or after May 1st, send an email to [email protected] to register your notebook and get the 3rd North America extended warranty.
Put in the email where and when you purchase the notebook, S/N of the notebook and the copies of the reseller invoice to register your laptop. You must register for the 3rd year N.A. extended warranty within 60 days from the reseller invoice.

I'll back John up on this one...... the easiest way to put it is if you don't recieve this notebook the way Asus shipped it from Taiwan, you're voiding Asus' warranty.

Justin

Any modification from stock will void all asus warranties, and will in turn switch you over to our 2 year warranty. Our warranty does cover parts and labor.

Question, Startech:
If I customize, say, an s5n only by adding 512 MB of RAM to get to the max 768, is the purchase still "unconfigured" such that it is eligible for the extra warranty? or does adding that extra ram preclude the now available 3rd year? -
That's irritating, frankly, but thanks for answering.

If we have to go back to the fact that Asus has two different lines which mostly all of us sell and they have to keep them from competing with each other. You've got the complete line and the custom line..... If all you want to do is add a stick of RAM, to have a dealer do it and void your warranty through Asus wouldn't be the smartest thing to do. Although the exact wording of the new warranty is "a customer may void their warranty by modifying the system", adding RAM yourself at some point can hardly take 5 minutes and can usually lead to no more damage than perhaps you shorting out the stick of RAM you're installing. Only a couple times have I ever heard of someone who was playing around inside these systems ever shorting out the motherboard while installing a new drive or RAM. For that reason, Asus words the new warranty harshly, but it really never changed. But people have to know if they screw it up, they're responsible for it if it's not a defect in the product.
So, if you're inbetween a bit, having a dealer do it may be your best option if you're unsure of yourself.
Thanks,
Justin

I have the S5N and I upgraded to 768Mb, it wasn't very hard to install, if I ever needed service, i'll just take out the ram and send it in.
ultimately its up to you, if you think you can handle the installation and removal of the ram, go for it. -
While I'm not a total ignoramus about computers, I'm not mechanically inclined and don't really trust myself to be mucking about with hardware, even if it is just installing a stick of RAM.
And while I can also understand Asus's desire to keep a strict line between their ensemble systems and their customizable lines, it seems a bit like throwing the baby out with the bathwater to include the dealer's adding a stick of RAM as an act that voids the manufacturer warranty.
Not any of y'alls faults, of course. I guess I should add that I am very close to pulling the trigger and purchasing an s5n, but I'm pretty deadset on upgrading to 768 MB RAM. The extra 3rd year of warranty was an added incentive to go with the Asus over some of the competitors I was looking at, but now I guess that's not really an option.
again, i appreciate the information and advice. -

I don't want to say the new wording of the warranty is like a scare tactic... but CC is right.... even the first time you're doing it, if it takes 5 minutes, I'd be surprised..... and 99.95% of the time, the ONLY thing you can do wrong is burn out the stick of RAM in your hands (one reason to get one with a lifetime warranty like corsair or kingston).... So, I know the feeling you're having, but the easy way to put it is.... get over it. It's not all technical and stuff like you're thinking. You're just thinking about it too much and that can be bad.
As long as you have a screw drive, fingers, 5 minutes of your life, (and the notebook and the ram stick, of course).... you can do this without instructions of any kind. It's very intuitive.
Thanks,
Justin

BJJ_Guy, if you're not comfortable yourself, I'm sure you know somebody somehow who could do it for you...or just buy your extra RAM from a physical store, not the same one you buy your S5N from (to make it simple and safe) and have them install it for you before you leave...A lot of the smaller stores out there will probably do it for free with your purchase because It's so simple...otherwise, there might be a small fee for them to do it, but you're getting what you want and the peice of mind it was done right...If you ever have any problems and need to send it in under warranty, take dt34's advice, and find someone once again to restore things for you.
To be honest though, adding RAM to the empty compartment on the bottom of all these systems couldn't be any simpler. I felt the same way as you do, until someone in here posted an official ASUS link featuring tutorials on how to replace/upgrade both compartments of RAM. It might have been for a W3V, but all systems are very similar and almost the identical process. I can't find where that went, but It's in here somewhere If you look for it...the topic was even something like (W3V) RAM upgrade tutorial...take a look at that before you make any decisions. Hope that helps a little. [8D] -

For example, It should be very, very similar to changing the battery's in your TV converter/remote...just pretend the RAM is the battery's and that you needed to unscrew the back compartment cover instead of it just clipping/sliding off. If someone can find that link...the tutorial with like 6 pictures will show you where everything is located and exactly what to do...It's all you'll need to do a flawless job. [8D]

You guys are correct, of course. After browsing on the web for a bit, I have a fair degree of confidence that I can install some extra RAM.
