When I bought my Asus Z63A laptop, I ordered it with one 1GB memory. Now I see there is a great deal on 1GB memory for only $49 after rebate here

    My question is:
Do I need to match the brand or the type of the memory with the original? If so how do I find out what brand or type my current memory is?

Thanks a lot for your help!

No you don't need to. I've got 2 different 1024 sticks in my notebook.

No way man. DDR-1 wouldn't even fit. You need DDR2 400 or 533.

LOL that was to funny. You definatly need to match the right type of memory lol. But seriously while you can mix different brands its always a smart move to get identical sticks. While it mattered more in the past, I have found a few recent situation where memory conflicted with another. But you need to buy so-dimm dd2 like Flip said.

Like SRD said, you atleast have to match the correct type of memory :p. Now for the brand of memory, it's best to have the same brand/manufacturer as the original. Most memory chips work fine with memory modules manufacturered by others. If you get matching chips, it just eliminates alot of the headaches. If you can get matching, by all means. If not, I'm pretty sure they will still work.

Might want too check the CAS latency. I'm not sure, but it might tell you in CPU-Z, 2.5 or 3.
